Listening to your superb show this afternoon, Thought you wouldn’t mind me correcting something , there are two songs called Walk On By you rightly said it was by Burt Bacharach but the one you played was written by Kendall Hayes, a hit for Leroy Van Dyke in 1961, the song was covered by over 80 other singers . The Bacharach song was a hit in 1964 for Dionne Warwick and has been covered by over 800 artists . It is reckoned to be one of the most perfect pop songs ever written .

I’m always open to correction, thank you very much. Good to hear from you at least I know I have one listener! I have been doing this show for over 2 years now, ever since Andy Marriott asked me to sign up back in 2014. It took me 7 years to take him up on his offer since I was never a professional spinner of records like so many of my colleagues on Serenade Radio. But I really enjoy the music I play and hopefully something that is the real me comes across even when I do get some things wrong or perhaps because I get things wrong!!

The radio heroes programme about hubert gregg was fascinating . I remember hearing him on the radio but i wasnt that familiar with him and never realised he had done so much. And i definitely didnt know he had written maybe it’s because I’m a londoner… The words of which i apparently still know from my damcing school days as i was having a good sing a long yesterday. I too knew all the words to “Maybe It’s Because I’m A Londoner” at a very early age even though I am a Bristolian. Hubert Gregg was a fascinating character and he gauged the mood of this country and his beloved city exactly right when he wrote “I’m Going To Get Lit Up When The Lights Go On In London” Not many like him around these days more’s the pity!

Great news! Benny Green – wonderful! Sunday afternoons at 2:00pm, “Good afternoon” followed by the opening bars of That’s Entertainment!, heralding an hour of the exploration of the Great American Songbook and their writers.
In my Facebook days, I was connected with his son, Leo, also a fine saxophone player and great radio broadcaster (chip off the old block!), he was so friendly, and he accepted all of the tribute messages for his dad very graciously.
For me, Serenade Radio is one of the blessings in life. Thank you all.

Jeff owen…blanket on the ground… Bringing back a load of fun memories. When i was 12 i used to sing in a band where everyone else was an adult. That was my song … . Very appropriate for a 12 year old. 🙂 I wonder if i knew at the time what i was singing about. I was a bit naive back then i probably thought ot was for a picnic😂

How long have I been listening to Serenade. Not long enough.
Computers down. That need replacing or repairing.
And this old phone that is ready to fail.
But I had an internet radio in a box for perhaps 4 years.
I dug it out. And got it to work. I suspect I have been listening from perhaps some of the lockdowns.
But now the shock. Have I really been listening to Sean Usher and Johnny “Mac” McAtasney for a year.
Where has that year gone. OK congratulations to you both. And here’s to hopefully another. Nay many more.

It’s on the album “The Amazing Adventures Of The Liverpool Scene” Andy Roberts was a student in Liverpool who could really play the guitar and this appealed to Adrian Henri, Mike Evans and the others who couldn’t! Thankyou for the Alan Dell tribute. My late mother was a onetime pianist for the Ivy benson band and I was raised on fabulous jazz and swing despite being born in the 60’s ! We would always listen to Alan on sunday afternoons. I have to confess that on hearing the familiar refrains of ‘Thats all’ I did shed a few tears but thats the power of music to evoke memories. Love the station, my only gripe is that its not available on DAB radio but maybe one day ?

You write about tears coming when listening to the Alan Dell programme, I have to admit that tears come all too readily to my eyes when I hear songs my late wife Ali loved played on Serenade Radio. Jane Markham played Acker Bilk’s “That’s My Home” this morning and the eyes moistened as they did when I played ” Memories Of You” in my afternoon show. Next week Hubert Gregg.

Thanks everso to new man Vic Groves, settling impressively well into Sunday lunchtime. The contextual info which Vic provides (first sung by… recorded in…) is welcome, spreading extra marmalade on the lunchtime toast and showing us that the music has meaning for him. Those country music songs at 1.30pm and 2.30 are a welcome extra. I wonder if Mr Marriott of this parish might allow Vic a country spot at 1pm and 2pm too. As that lady at the El Morocco tea rooms once said, it does you good to have a fling occasionally.

I love the music that Serenade plays and thoroughly enjoy the research involved in finding the background information. Sometimes the marmalade mighr be Marmite to some!! It took me a couple of seconds to understand the final second but, as I love the Goon Show and Peter’s other work, I realised it was “Four square on the Northern Line.” If the show doesn’t catch on I can always turn my hand to Toothbrush Holesmanship!! Any chance of having a re-run of Radio Heroes in the future, please? I only caught the tail end of the legendary David Jacobs yesterday. My wife and I were devotees to his Radio 2 programme for years. Something very reassuring in his voice and manner. Once Don Black left, we were bereft (I think they replaced Don with some medical programme to remind us of our mortality?!). We searched for therapy and found Serenade Radio and have never left.
Whilst emailing, we’ve found two downsides to SR (1) we have to sleep, (2) we have to take the dog for a walk. This means we miss out on some great stuff, especially at weekends. A Saturday result for us is waking up halfway through Johnny McAtasney’s show (really try for the start – difficult) and still being awake at the end of Late Night Extra with Steve James, which we love. Thank you very much to ALL the Presenters and Producers for doing such a terrific and professional job. It’s greatly appreciated!

Mum and myself tuned into David’s Sunday night R2 show. Probably he was what most resembled the station we knew. As David’s health was failing and was publicly admitted. My Mum was terminally ill and I guess with all that was going on. I lost track of his last year or so on air. I never heard that final broadcast which was obviously a struggle.
I did tune into Don Black. Then his show was shared with another(I forget who)I think each did 12 programmes at a time.
Hubert Gregg will be interesting. A very colourful life and sadly sidestepped when radio presenters are talked about.

This is a great station, and I only found out about it because someone advised me that there was a programme called Radio Heroes. It features David Jacobs tonight, and because I run a Facebook group for David, “David Jacobs..Our kind of music!”, it was of particular interest.
As a Radio Presenter myself, it’s really goodto hear such a variety of ‘Radio as it used to be’.

My wife and I recently went on holiday to St Peter Port in Guernsey. We knew that Robert Farnon was buried in St Peter Port graveyard and went to pay our respects. We discovered that he is buried next to Ronnie Hazelhurst!
Later in our hotel we met a total stranger, a Guernsey resident, and in the course of conversation we mentioned our visit to Roberts grave. The stranger then told us that Robert’s son David played the music music at his wedding.
As I write this Andy Marriott has just played a piece by Robert Farnon and his Orchestra!
We often go to listen to Roberts great niece Nicola Farnon playing at a venue in Leopold Square Sheffield.

Just to say I really enjoyed Radio Heroes just now. What a really well put together programme about Alan Dell, and really nice to hear that oh so easy presentation style again.
I am really looking forward to the rest of the series.
On a point of order, around 15 minutes in mention was made of Ray Moore, regarding him losing 15 minutes of his show to allow Alan to complete his tribute to Glenn Miller.
If there’s any chance of a second series then Ray, Sir Terry, Jimmy Young and John Dunn surely have to be top of the list.

What a pleasure to hear the dulcet tones of the great Alan Dell on the show Radio Heros. It reminds us of what we are missing on modern day radio, Serenade Radio being the exception. In Ireland most of our kind of music can only be heard by by tuning into local community stations manned by volunteers with a great knowledge of their particular genre of music. Thank you SO much for taking the time to reply.
I will not allow anything to interfere with my radio listening next Saturday, as it’s going to be gentle fun guessing who is up and coming for the focus of your programme each week. It is a glorious idea for a programme on a station like Serenade, and were I a betting man, I’d wager a few shillings (!) it might include a certain genial Merseysider and avid smoker from early morning radio, who one became confused over a rabbit-duck-fish 😁
As a boy, I had a relatively lonely childhood, and found incredible companionship is the radio. I still recall, thanks to a gift of memory, the likes of Jack Jackson, Bruce Wyndham, Sam Costa, Charlie Chester, Pete Murray and Keith Skues to name a few. Also Hubert Gregg, and when I left a message on an internet Book of Condolence on news of his passing,I had a lovely e-mail from his producer, Roy Oakeshott, which I still have.
Alan Dell was very special. His style of positioning his microphone very close to his mouth, and whispering very gently into it was his trademark, but his intros and choice of music, were sublime. When David announced he had passed, after sitting in for several months, I didn’t even know Alan was ill, partly due to a smaller internet presence than now, possibly due to a certain stoicism?
Really looking forward to this series on my favourite ‘radio’ station, many thanks again.

Alan Dell. Superb. I’d be a teenage then. I will take uneducated guess that he did a Sunday Afternoon show. Possibly before being followed by Benny Green. Russell Davies and Desmond Carrington. Or following each other perhaps?
In time and probably very much later I have memories that Sing Something Simple and Charlie Chester between 4pm and 7pm.

It amazes me how much emotion listening to Serenade Radio brings out. Just catching up with Dick Fisher as i was out this morning and he played Born with a smile on my face. I had an uncle who played the piano and used to accompany me sometimes when i sang at odd events. Id forgotten all about that song but it was one of our tunes and the last time i heard it he was playing it. He is sadly no longer with us .. but such happy memories brought straight back…. I might need a tissue. !! Thank you for playing that Dick.

I often find when selecting music, that I am driven more by the memories that particular songs bring flooding back than their chart success or technical quality. I quite agree, Philip. The Banjoliers did more MWYW programmes than any other combination (475 appearances) and I had the honour to be present at their final broadcast in 1982. Quite an experience, I can tell you!

Hi Andy, what a brilliant radio station you have made, absolutely love it, so nostalgic, and great to discover so many songs from the 50’s and before, that are new to me, real quality music. My favourites programmes are “Music while you work”, “Sing something simple”, your own weekday morning shows, your Saturday “TV” show, and the Big Band type songs on Monday & Tuesday at 21:00. The music you play is so appreciated by those of us who have become bored with the national and commercial radio stations who just churn out the same stuff, and are frightened to play the songs you play.
I know you can’t please everyone, but my only gripe is Dick Fisher playing songs from the 70’s, I heard “Young hearts run free” amongst others today, this is the type of stuff played to death on the likes of “Magic” and “Gold” radio ! Please keep Serenade unique !!!

I have been thinking about this for a few days now and whilst i wouldnt want to hear lots of 70s music, or even 60s music to be honest, if you dont listen to anything else other than Serenade the odd 70s track is nice to hear. A little survey i did listening whilst working at home Tuesday and Wednesday would suggest Dick Fisher played 1 70s tune on Tuesday and 2 on Wednesday. It’s hardly excessive… And the important thing is they were decent 70s tracks. I prefer the older stuff but also like that teensy bit of variation. I dont think it detracts from the uniqueness of Serenade Radio.

On the front page of the Serenade website, Andy wrote: “The music on Serenade Radio is the best in easy listening mostly from the 1940s to 1970s. We don’t play music because of its age, we play it because it is worth hearing!”
Personally I like to hear some of the newer music in the weekly shows, I also really enjoy the Steve James’ and Jeff Owen programmes. I think the variety of shows that cover other period/styles such as the Big Band music, Folk Music, Songs from the Shows, Jazz, Dance Bands, Light Music, Mark Steyn, Music While You Work, Sing Something Simple and specialist series such as Radio Heroes and the TV Show, is what sets Serenade head and shoulders above other stations and all this without advertising!

I would agree. There are plenty of places to hear newer music but few radio stations sound as good as Serenade Radio (when it is doing a show I like, and that’s not always the case). Never thought I’d say a Johnny Mathis song needs to be “gone, gone, gone”. But Dick Fisher does play so many good sounding songs.

David, thank you for your comments; going to two hours does present more challenges and opportunities. I am tempted to push the boundaries a little bit while having the Easy Listening remit of the station in mind. There’s a book by Dylan Jones called “The Wichita Lineman” which I can recommend for insights into Jimmy Webb as a songwriter. I need to get better organised for requests, especially as the suggestions from you and others, is so interesting. I’ll put The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress on the list but it can sometimes take a little while to get new songs onto the Serenade system. Thank you for your interest! Roger

Agreed. But I said something similar here and to John directly😊 Radio does evolve. It always has. As does the listener.
But the stations offered on FM/DAB are generally similar. Repetitive. Ignores great swathes of music. Presentation is hyper and cluttered.
Younger people can be coerced into liking music that is older and unknown. And older people to like newer music.
We have some very good new artists singing the music Serenade plays. But its difficult to get hold of their work.
Champian Fulton is one such artist. Its great to see Matt Dusk and Peter Grant on the station. But again very difficult to access their recorded work.
And some seem to release a couple of albums. Are highly praised and then disappear.
Long live Serenade Radio.

Just listening in to Dance Band Days, and I think you were querying the vocalist on Harry Bidgood And His Broadcasters – I Don’t Mind Being All Alone?
I’m wondering if it was Cyril Ramon Newton, who sang on a few numbers by this band at that time. In one of the internet references, a listing is mentioned in this book: “British Dance Bands On Record 1911 to 1945” by Brian Rust and Sandy Forbes, publ. 1987.

Steve, you raise an interesting point. Dance Band Days is very much a team effort. We draw upon the expert knowledge of John Wright behind the scenes and Andy Marriot who produces the show. Andy has a copy of the book you mention which does not list individual vocalists for the number in question. However we do know that Cavan O’Connor, John Thorne and Bobby Sanders were present at the same recording session but there’s no mention of Cyril Ramon Newton. Roger i am reading a book called ‘ british dance band days .. the singers and smaller bands’ and i had just got to Cavan O ‘Connor a couple of nights ago. It was explaining he sang under a number of pseudonyms ann then says the reason we dont always know the singer is that an unknown singer commanded a fee of 2 guineas but once they became recognised it was doubled. So they tried to stop the singer being recognised by them not being named or singing under a variety of pseudonyms..a ploy to keep the cost down …. Which is fascinating but a bit annoying now when we try to work out who.it is. Although you probably know all that already … Fascinating to me though as i am just reading it !

Sure wish you guys would add some Donna Hightower into the playlist. Her two Capitol albums sold well in UK in 1959-1960 and she appeared with Ted Heath on his Granada Bandstand program in 1959-1960. She also released a series of wonderful albums in Spain in the early to mid-1970’s. A fine jazz, pop and gospel vocalist. Please add!

Kismet! Thanks much, Andy! Don’t miss her standout 1975 album titled “I’m in Love with Love.” Imagine Nancy Wilson lived in Spain and recorded and you’ll get the feel of that album. Donna’s version of the title track “I’m in Love with Love,” (jazzy, soulful, big band with strings) and others like “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” and Gordon Jenkin’s “Good-Bye” are outstanding and so very underplayed. In the last few hours I have received countless messages from listeners concerned that Light Music will no longer be part of Serenade Radio. This could not be further from the truth. The untimely death of David Corbett has, of course, meant that the programme could not continue in it’s present form. Indeed David is a very hard act to follow.
Be assured, Light Music fans, we are not abandoning you. Please be patient.
In the meantime Music While You Work can be heard every weekday morning at 9.30, and there’s some lovely Light Music from the archive every Thursday evening at 9.30

As long as Serenade radio continues to exist I am not concerned that the quality and variety will change. You play what others have neglected and forgotten bit also find new music that fits into its criteria. Older music does not mean it is old fashioned as it does not mean that everything released today is just noise.
The problem is that other stations avoid it. I grew up with all kinds of music. I had older parents so I heard music they knew and vice versa.
But as Stanley Black has been mentioned. I am truly amazed at the volume of music the likes of him were released on record. Also how many orchestras and arrangers were issuing instrumental versions of “Pop” songs certainly into the late 70’s and 80’s. Then stopped.

Linda, Like David there is something special about British Light Classics music. It provokes memories. Nostalgia. Emotions specific to it. It also has a quality of its own. Sadly many great composers, musicians and arrangers and a time forgotten.
Strange that you should mention Dusk. I woke at 4am Sunday morning and was playing a CD of such music and I found that piece did affect me too.

I have just heard Peter Tomlinson announce the very sad news about David Corbett – and now coming to the website have seen the announcement on the home page (I often use an internet radio). I loved hearing David’s programmes of music you won’t find anywhere else; and champions of this genre are few today. I heard so many pieces that were new to me – when this music would be heard regularly on the Light on 1500m I was likely tuned to a pirate station! Fortunately, ones tastes and outlook broaden. We have lost a fount of knowledge and a gentleman.

David Corbett and I were good friends for over forty years, united by our mutual passion for light music. He was the author of a 600 page book about conductor, Harry Davidson and old-time dance music in general. He was one of a dwindling number of authorities on the genre of light music. We didn’t get to meet very often but spoke almost weekly on the phone – indeed we had a long conversation on the day before his demise! The “Light Programme” which ran for over five years, was his passion – and it showed!
I have now learned that David’s passing was a peaceful one – in a coffee shop, whilst drinking a cup of coffee, he just slipped away. May his soul rest in peace! My condolences to his loved ones.

I have it on an ” unauthorised” cd which i did get legally ! ( from Amazon) It’s from a bbc tvsopresumably the same thing you’ve seen. I think though she recorded it as well as a solo. Strangely she seems tohave been forgotten but was on tv lots in the late 60s. The rest of the cd is broadly bbc2 and radio1 recordings.Hopethis helps

So very sorry to hear the death of lovely presenter David Corbett who presented The Light Programme. I loved his programme and never missed his shows. He played the lovely kind of music that we used to hear on the radio in days gone by. RIP David you will be so missed

Very sad to have just read the news of the passing of David Corbett who presented the “Light Programme” on Sunday nights.
My music taste is extremely wide and it was good to see acknowledgement to music ignored virtually anywhere else.
Some may say(and it is an attitude within radio in general)to avoid playing certain music because it is unpopular. Forgetting that could be because a genre of music is dropped or given little exposure.
The same stations with such an attitude start to sound too similar. Copy each other. Are unadventurous. Repetatative.
Unfortunately the programme was on air on one of very few nights I am in company and not at home. Unable to record it to listen to later.
Many years ago. My friend Bob Monkhouse. Yes the very same. Did a wonderful music series featuring the music David played on Serenade on BBC Radio 3.
Once again sending heartfelt condolences to David’s family and colleagues. And thinking of him too.

I’ve only just seen the news, and would like to echo Anthony’s words – David was a wonderful broadcaster, whose knowledge of the his field was imparted subtly but authoritatively. It is a favourite genre of music for me, and I was astonished from his two-hour programmes how many pieces I had not heard of before.
I remember that Bob Monkhouse series for a national broadcaster, I wish I’d recorded it, as I do with David’s wonderful programmes. I would love to hear repeats at some point. My thoughts are with his family.

I am at the Goodwood festival of speed….a Christmas present to my husband. Im not a great fan of cars and am soaked to the skin. Thank goodness i can have David Yarnall in my ear keeping me sane . You can always rely on SR wherever you are . 🙂

How fortunate. I don’t get much but I am usually home in time for the 9.30pm Thursday specials.
So tonight was a especially welcome hearing Robert Farnon and guest singer Ronnie Carroll.
We really did have some wonderful but sadly forgotten vocalists. Orchestras, bands, composers and arrangers.
You do wonder how many programmes were wiped or if on transcription disc services were just discarded and thrown into skips when stations had a clear out.
There are so many wonderful programmes that still exist of the golden age of US radio music and performers we only knew from the films or records that reached these shores.
When TV dominated and took over in the 50’s so many treasures were dumped.
I suspect it is even more difficult to trace broadcasts from the UK.
A similar problem happened in Australia too.

I missed five minutes and panicked as my internet radio played up and I feared I was going to have set it up from scratch.
I suspect the presenter was John Benson.
It was interesting hearing Ronnie Carroll sing The Folks who live on the Hill. With an introduction/preamble before the main song was sung.
As other Serenade Radio presenters have commented on this practice is rarely heard these days even when standards are sung these days.

I think it was a series that ended a couple of weeks ago. I am sure he said ‘until next time’ at the end of the last program though. So it may be back in the future.

When i first started listening to Serenade Radio, as a child of the sixties with parents from the thirties it was the music we listened to at home that i was most attracted to. And i still love it. But the more i listen i have realised it is the music of my grandparents era that i am loving the most at the moment. It started when i realised that i was listening out for Andy’s vintage spot each day. That made me listen to music while you work, and now dance band days is a must listen for me. The music has such atmosphere and is totally neglected every where else except on SR. I am not sure i would even have heard it without SR. We are rather spoiled in that respect. Great stuff.

Gosh, you guys are so awesome and have introduced me to so many wonderful singers and bands, love it so much. One request: you’re missing out if you’re not playing some Donna Hightower along with your many other great jazz and pop singers of this period. How about something from her 1958 Capitol record “Take One,” or her 1975 Columbia recording, “I’m in Love with Love.” Gorgeous vocals.
