Ron Goodwin And His Orchestra – 633 Squadron, played on Andy’s programme this morning, was Superb!
Thankyou Serenade Radio,
You truly are the very best in Easy Listening.
Allen Ellis on 14 April 2024
Remembering Ron Goodwin, what a kind generous and humorous man is was. They do not come like him very often.
Andi on 11 April 2024
My dad is 95 and not well. I am playing Serenade Radio all day for him and he is loving it. It is really helping him to relax. The fact that there are no ads or nasty news stories makes it so perfect for him in his current state. Thank you and well done.
Suzy on 11 April 2024
What a delight hearing Hylda Baker’s ‘She Knows You Know’ yesterday, Andy. Thank you so much. That became quite a family saying of ours when we were kids that I’d forgotten about. You just don’t get great characters on TV or radio like that these days, do you, but thankfully we can still find them on the one and only, utterly unique Serenade Radio.
Bernard Lazenbury on 8 April 2024
Hi Roger – boy did that mention of William Appleby shake the memory tree. With Gladys Whitred they presented “Singing Together” which brought back recollections of being herded into the classroom to sing some great songs. At age 8 my first intro to traditional English folk. I’ve revisited a few of them on Spotify and it would be great to hear any of them on your show.
Westering Home. The Corries
Bingo. John Langstaffe
Twankydillo, Maddy Prior
The Drummer & The Cook. The Robert Shaw Chorale
The Lincolnshire Poacher. The Teacups
Thanks for an always interesting and enjoyable programme.
Kind regards
Bernie Lazenbury
Roger Williams on 8 April 2024
Bernie,
What a lovely response! I was prompted to mention this after I picked up a copy of a Singing Together booklet on Hucknall Market.
Your memories are just great and I will feature some of your choices on future shows. For reasons too boring to go into it’ll take a while to schedule your choices, but bear with me and it will happen. Lovely to hear from you.
Roger

I am one , who, like many have trouble sleeping. This week I was treated to the fabulous Peter Tomlinson show in the early hours of this morning. Thank you Serenade and like Jillian Powell who have posted before myself, I too enjoy Mark Steyn with his record of the week
Jillian Powell on 7 April 2024
Found you via the wonderful Mark Steyn. Love, love, love it. Just wish you had a dedicated DAB radio channel.

I love waking up to Ed Wellman on Saturdays and Sundays and so wish he was on all week to start the day with his gentle approach and unique music choice and knowledge. It feels like he’s talking just to me. Yes, Ed, I’m sure I’m not the only one responding back to things you say to us! x

Hi Dick, I agree Vic Damone didn’t get the recognition he deserved yet I think he had a great vocal range. After his death I lobbied a particular tv station that regularly showed tributes of deceased artists but to no avail. So thank you serenade radio. I can hear all these wonderful artists like Vic, Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams etc, and a new one for me Jerry Vale.
Helen on 5 April 2024
Hearing Sam Brown sing – There’ll Always Be An England, was Absolutely Wonderful.
Peter Mangan on 5 April 2024
I totally agree with you Helen,in this day and age one could never imagine the BBC playing it.Thank you Andy.
Avril on 4 April 2024
Serenade radio ,you have filled our days with joy-such a great antidote to the doom and gloom we are bombarded with on a daily basis from other media outlets. Love everything you play and all the comments in between the music.perfect. Just wondering from your vast archive whether you ever play anything from the Andy Prior Orchestra. Living in Blackpool we used to hear them regularly when they occupied a season long slot at the Blackpool Tower doing their bit to keep the music of Glen Miller and co alive during the80s. Are they still around? Many thanks to all the team Hope you know how much your radio is loved
Steve in Worcs. on 4 April 2024
What a fabulous recording that was of Max Bygraves Remembering Jimmy Durante, just now. Huge special thanks to Max’s son for sending it. Two of my favourite entertainers also, Andy – Jimmy was truly unique.
‘It’s so important to make someone happy’ 😊

Loving hearing Vic Damone Linger Awhile. It’s impossible to have a favourite Vic song, his vocal range is beautiful. Just listen to the end of All the Things You Are. He had the power as well in La Vita. And he often sings in Italian as well.
Colin J Rous on 3 April 2024
This is a wonderful station but I am disappointed that, after listening to “Music while you work”, it is not followed by “Mrs.Dale’s Diary”!!!!! Hey Ho! Fantastic listening though.

Hi. Roger if there is another Children’s Favourite programme may I suggest Thumbelina by Danny Kaye please.
Roger Williams on 2 April 2024
Hello Barbara, No date has been fixed for another Children’s Favourites but there’s no doubt that Monday’s show was very well received so it’s highly likely that we’ll do it again. It’s hard to imagine a show without Danny Kaye – the problem is there are so many to choose from. No promises but I’ll put Thumbelina on the list. Roger
David Small on 2 April 2024
Thank you Roger for such a lovely programme Childrens Favourites I sang along to all the somgs and amazingly I remembered all the words. More please It brought back so many happy memories of Saturday mornings on the old Light Programme with Uncle Mac I still have my Uncle Mac annual.
Roger Williams on 2 April 2024
Hello David, thank you for yor lovely comments. An Uncle Mac annual? Never knew there was such a thing. A collectors item I reckon. One for The Antiques Roadshow I reckon.
Linnette on 1 April 2024

I’ve been listening since December and I absolutely love the station. I just sent a donation to keep the music playing.
If you ever need a suggestion for an album of the week what about something from Chris Connor? I would love to hear her on SR. She’s criminally underrated and her 1950s albums including her Gershwin recordings are a treat.
Diane Meyer on 28 March 2024
Absolutely am thrilled to find this station. As a child of the ‘50’s this sparks so many fond memories. I am from Springfield Missouri USA and love love love the English DJ’s. Have told so many about this station. Keep up the wonderful music.
Alan Beggs on 27 March 2024
One of the wonderful things about Serenade Radio is the dated names of many of the performers. Here’s a few – girls are not called this these days! Doris, Mavis, Judith, Shirley, Irene, Peggy to name but a few.
Barbara Heathcote on 26 March 2024
Hi. Just sent a small donation in appreciation of a wonderful radio station. Great presenters and my kind of music. You can buy some Easter eggs.

Dave Phillips on 25 March 2024
Hi Steve,
I listen to your regular shows at the weekend and I must say the musical content and the little additions of information you put in are excellent.
Your show at the weekend was fantastic because of the real quality of some terrific music of the 60s and the Latin music what a terrific combination and a sheer joy to listen too.
Please May it continue and thanks Steve for making my weekend get of to a brilliant start.
I did like the mention of the late great radio2 presenter Ray Moore and your musical tribute of the Mike Leander orchestra and the Beatles song Here, There and Everywhere, what a great piece it lifts the hair on the back my of the neck when i hear this Terrific sound!!
Thank you Serenade Radio.
Best wishes Dave

Adrian Long on 22 March 2024
Simon I really like you music programme on serenade radio also I like morning music from 6 to 7 am.
Don’t want say anything really,
But Have you ever played.
Peter hope’s rings around kerry or any others by him.
Or Charles Williams, Rhythm on the rails,
And Tom Tom the piper’s son, Workshop
Or any by Sidney Torch. Robert Farnon
Trevor Duncan.
They made great arrangements as well as writing.
Cheerful music, I remember it on the light programme and the brilliant Friday night is music night.
I didn’t like Light Orchestral Music when I was in school it had be pop music stones, aminals hollies, etc,
Then one day I completely change to enjoying light orchestral music it was the Olympics games in Tokyo theme called Tokyo melody it had a brilliant flipside Teatime in Tokyo plus sounds orchestral cast your fate to the wind had them on 7” single weared them out because I played so much.
Sorry I’m not that good of letter writer.
Simon McLean on 25 March 2024
Hi Adrian, thanks for your suggestions, all of them excellent – I do have Peter Hope’s Ring Of Kerry suite, which is lovely! I’ve also got Helmut Zacharias’ Tokyo Melody, and a large number of other tracks by him which I definitely need to include in future shows.

Hi Andy, listening to Norman Wisdom. Last year on holiday in Italy, one of our waiters originated from Albania so I asked him if he knew that Norman was the king of Albania, he’d never heard of him. Anyway chap on table next to us started singing Dont Laugh at me cause I’m a fool. Think he thought we were all drunk🤣. Wasn’t guv honest .
Robert Moskalik on 21 March 2024
Thanks to Andy Marriott for having the wonderful idea of playing this type of music, especially Jo Stafford. I have always loved this lady’s voice and never tire of hearing it played on Serenade Music! I say- keep up the good work, Mariott!

Hi, just listening to Eddie Fisher singing Hold Me takes me back to early 60s when I bought my first ever record, PJ Proby singing the same song , absolutely loved it, had no record player though 🤣 so could only play when visiting friends, Didn’t realise it was that old.
Andy Grahamme on 16 March 2024

The Saturday oldies programme is just the best!
Such a varied and unexpected selection of music. Jeff avoids the obvious and predictable and produces such a fine show. Other stations are nowhere near as good as this
Mr David Phillips on 14 March 2024
Hi Steve
Thanks for another great ORGAN OF MUSIC SHOW, featuring those two genius composers GOERGE & IRA GERSHWIN’S compositions what a terrific combination when played on a real selection of the pipe / theatre organs vintage instruments.
Best wishes Steve and to all the team / presenters at SERENADE please continue to keep this music for our generations.
Thank you
Dave Sunny Donny😎👏

Good afternoon, I’m listening to Serenade now (John Darvall while I deal with my general admin at home which isn’t fun, but it’s made to be a pleasant experience as I dance around the room to the lovely songs being played. All the presenters are excellent. When I wake up I subject myself to the latest depressing news then quickly switch over to listen to Andy Marriott who thankfully restores my sanity and good humour and sets me up for the day. I’m so grateful to him. I love his humorous comments, his tone of voice and choice of music. I look forward to the 8.30 ‘bit of nonsense’. Thanks to you all for the ‘chicken soup for my soul’ that you provide (even though I’m vegetarian 🙂
Barbara Heathcote on 13 March 2024
Hi Andy, I have the Linger Awhile LP, it would be great to have it as LP of the week. His rendition of In the Still of the Night is fabulous. I have over 15 vinyls plus several dvds so a lot to choose from.
Andy Marriott on 15 March 2024
Stay tuned Barbara, coming soon!
Arthur on 13 March 2024
Listening to this ole house on the way to work in the car… And after all these years of hearing the jolly tune ive just realised its about a man getting ready to die. Well that’s started the day on a cheery note 😀
Barbara Heathcote on 12 March 2024
Hi Andy, I wouldn’t have known that was the New Christie minstrels, the only song I can remember them singing is 3 Wheels on my wagon. Perhaps something to play sometime.
Andy Marriott on 12 March 2024
Hi Barbara,
Yes, they are most famous for three wheels, yet it is nothing like the rest of their stuff.
We’ll have it as nonsense one day soon.
All the best.
John Bodman on 12 March 2024
A little late but I wanted to write in and say how much I enjoyed listening on Saturday afternoon. I am not usually able to listen then but by chance I happened to be home alone and feeling under the weather I decided to spend time with my musical companion Serenade Radio. I absolutely loved Cindy Kent! Her comment about when she was staying at a friend’s place watching the birds was priceless “there was some kind of pigeon and a lot of little birds…you can tell I am no ornithologist…” I needed to smile and I laughed out loud. The music was lovely also. The Beatles, Cilla and Roy Orbison in amongst artistes of a bygone era you only hear on Serenade. To say I was entertained would be an understatement. Then I sat and listened intently to the Crooners Club. Wow! What an informative and interesting hour. Thank you, John Walton. Who knew that Dick Haymes led such a colourful life! I rounded off my Saturday in the delightful and charming company of Kevin Taylor coming all the way from the American desert. A perfect day of music and companionship. Thank you Serenade Radio for such excellent shows.
John Walton on 13 March 2024
Thanks for listening, John. Glad the ‘Saturday gang’ managed to cheer you up. As I believe Dick Fisher said recently, if we’re to avoid the old, boring ‘This is, that was’ groove, a good way is to give a few snippets about the song or the singer. Very pleased you appreciate it!
Helen on 11 March 2024
How lovely to hear Bobby Darin and his Album, Oh! Look at Me Now is going to be Album of the week. Wonderful.
Karen on 9 March 2024
Ive come to my favourite thinking spot to work some things out. The sun is out. The sea is lapping near my feet.. the only thing different since i last did this is i now have SR to provide the musicall background. Thank you Stuart Linnell for making a lovely spot even more perfect. Great show.
Stuart Linnell on 9 March 2024
Thank you Karen. Lovely to know that you’re enjoying the show. Your favourite place sounds idyllic.
Dave Sunny Donny👏👍😎 on 7 March 2024
Hi Steve
Yet again you have put a variety of organ gems together love the Glenn Miller slot it was a sheer joy to hear all “breathing body “ of these fine and much missed great instruments.
It was also great to hear Phil Kelsall, I watch this young man grow into a terrific organist, succeeding the one time greats at Blackpool tower and the Wurlitzer,Reg Dixon, Ernest Broadbent and of course other great organists that have graced the Blackpool showpiece.
Thanks Steve again for a really enjoyable half hour
Best wishes to all at Serenade presenters for such a great choice of music for our generations
Colin Rous on 7 March 2024
Serenade Radio has filled a gap in my life. When we were growing up post-war, we used to listen to the wireless to keep us from thinking about all the problems of life. Serenade has taken me back to the days of Alan Keith on the Light Programme and the comedy of Take it from here, Garrison Theatre, The Huggets, and so many more. Thank you all so much. All I need now is to hear The Ovaltinies and İ’ll be fully satisfied!!!!!
Joyce Spark on 7 March 2024
I listen all day long. I particularly like Andy Marriott’s show and Sing Something Simple on Sunday and the show that follows it that highlights one song with its history and recordings. A true radio gem in the radio wasteland here!
Colin Rous on 6 March 2024
Thank you Serenade, and especially Andy Marriot, for playing “The Little Red Monkey” by the cast of “Take it from here”. Such wonderful memories of our family sitting around the wireless listening to programmes such as this. Well done Serenade Radio – you do so much for our older generation! Yes, we do grow old ……. but we don’t always grow up!!!!!!

We’ve been listening to Serenade for a year or so. It’s on most of the day and some nights. We don’t listen to anything else . Thankyou for a fantastic radio station. A note to Andy I love silly songs and have made a list , some I bet you’ve never heard of. Let me know if you wish to see the list for your 8.30 slot. Couldn’t live without serenade
Andy Grahamme on 4 March 2024
Andy Marriott is such a unique and entertaining broadcaster…he would have fitted in perfectly on Radio 2 in the golden era of Ray Moore..Tel and Jimbo etc. Talking of Radio 2..if you miss those great days, then Serenade Radio is for you…terrific music..quality presentation…across the week..long may it continue!!
Ian Senior on 4 March 2024

Steve in Worcs. on 8 March 2024
You too, Ian? 😊
I was just reading the Variety obituary on the marvellous Steve Lawrence (RIP) this morning, when Andy mentioned his passing and played “I Was a Fool To Let You Go”. Serenade is a station that still plays songs by “Mr. and Mrs. Showbiz”, and with all of the other content and excellent presenters and contributors, it is a fabulous station.

We are a MUSIC station. Are you suggesting that we vet every artist we play, and only play those whose political views align with yours?

Just heard Sammy Davis Jnr I Gotta be Me. Love that song. Such a powerful voice.

John Darvall asked for suggestions for the Serenade Spotlight feature earlier today. May I suggest a trio from Edward Woodward from his album “Feelings” e.g. “They didn’t believe Me” , Can’t Smile without you” and “The Way you look Tonight” to name but three. Though not regarded in the top echelon of singers, Edward is so under-rated. John D continues to provide us with an excellent show each weekday afternoon. Many thanks. Ian
Dave from sunny Donny😎 on 29 February 2024
Hi again Steve
Another enjoyable broadcast of theatre/ pipe organ music ,it’s so wonderful to hear this music ofyesterday year.
I often visit an organ society in Haworth/ Bircoates in north Nottinghamshire where they hold concerts on the last Sunday of each month.
They have a CHRISTIE of which raises from the basement up on to the stage with the organist playing away,
It is truly a great spectacle when this happens,
It has to be a huge thank you the the enthusiasts that give their time up to keep this fine instrument in very good working order and keep the sheer enjoyment the sound of this fantastic instrument 👏😀🎼
Steve Ashley on 29 February 2024
Thanks again, Dave! I wish I could get to concerts from time to time, but the cost of travel from Spain is now just crazy, and the UK is also so expensive. But I am going to an organ weekend in St. Louis in April – my yearly treat!
Mr David Phillips on 29 February 2024
Thanks Steve for your reply, I really hope you have a very enjoyable time in St Louis in April.
Beast wishes

I enjoyed Ed Wellman’s Dawn Chorus Programme this morning, As I do every Saturday and Sunday morning.
One of my favourite pieces of music was played today,
The Watermill – Ronald Binge.
A beautiful version from Charles Gerhardt.
A real treat.
Ed Wellman on 24 February 2024
Thank you, Helen. The Watermill is such a lovely piece with gentle melodies weaving between the flutes and violins. Thank you for being with the Dawn Chorus, it’s a lovely time of day for us all to share with the music. Especially as we are now achieving sunrise in time for Steve!
Suzy on 25 February 2024
And I loved Elizabethan Serenade and a little later, the wonderful Piano Guys whose videos I’ve seen on YouTube and Ed too recommended them. Today I enjoy the Ladies in Lavender music. Problem is, it’s so gentle, lovely and Ed’s voice is oh so very relaxing …… I miss some as I doze back off into a contended sleep.

So SR is now on my Apple HomePod via TuneIn (or rather Toon In), my kitchen via Bose speaker and my car via the app and bluetooth radio. One happy bunny.

Good morning Dick Fisher,
I really look forward to your weekday 1o am program ‘s , it’s a real joy to listen to a great selection of song’s and string/ orchestral that you play daily on your show.
It was great to hear Klaus Wunderlick on a much missed organ piece of music,I just love organ music and again since the BBC took of their organist entertains featuring great organ players from theatre to more modern electric organs, however it was a real joy and a bonus to my ears that SERENADE RADIO thanks to you Dick and your programme directors gave an airing to these much missed instruments.
Thanks to you all at SERENADE RADIO for making a great music lover happy today.
Best wishes to you all at SERENADE RADIO.😀👍👏
dick fisher on 20 February 2024
Hi Dave
Old Klaus did record some amazingly good arrangements of popular tunes. It’s a pity we don’t hear any recordings using the newer “organs” (or should that be keyboards) that are now available. At least we have Steve Ashley’s “Hot Pipes” here at Serenade keeping the traditional forms of organ music very much alive! One thing’s for certain, you won’t find our kind of music anywhere else!
Wendy on 20 February 2024
I could listen to Stan Freberg in the comedy slot everyday. It makes me laugh out loud. The perfect antidote when things are generally a bit rubbish. Where else would we ever hear those wonderful tracks. Thank you.
James on 20 February 2024
I love everything aboutMusic Box: Simon’s relaxed and affable style, the choice of music (Dankworth today was brilliant) and probably most of all, I get so much identification as a fellow sore-kneed charity shop crate digger. Music Box is a real highlight of my day.
Simon McLean on 20 February 2024
Thank you very much – nice to meet a fellow sufferer of charity shop knee, there ought to be a support group! I’ve seen a few fans of Dankworth’s earlier work being rather dismissive of the ‘Off Duty ‘ album, but naturally I disagree – it took me years to find it too. Thanks for listening!
Natausha on 18 February 2024
Absolutely enjoy the Soft Folkus program. It has me searching and looking up the artists presented and finding new favorites. Thank you!

To be is to do. Sartre
Do be do be do. Sinatra.

Although i was born in the early 60s . I am not a big fan 9f 60s pop stuff, liking music that is much older instead. But there are a few pop tunes that i really love and Steve James has played them all today. And ive finally been motivated
to hunt down that Martins Magic Sounds lp of the internet after weeks of thinking about it. What a great show today. Thanks Steve.
Steve James on 18 February 2024
Hi Karen, thank you for your comments and yes the Martin’s Magic Sounds LP is a lovely 60s period piece. How nice to know that someone else appreciates it too! I’m sure you won’t be disappointed with it if you can track down a copy.
Karen on 19 February 2024
I found a copy Steve . Not exactly cheap but there dont seem to be many around !

The world would be a better place if we all woke up to gentle Ed Wellman every morning. Ahhhhhh. Love your musical knowledge, your voice and your quips, Ed, as I lie awake from 6am onwards on weekend mornings. (And love ‘grumpy’ Andy during the week too.) Thank you, Serenade. We’re all out here listening and supporting. You’re all like old friends now. x

What great shows .. Thank you for the company and the fabulous entertainment.

So pleased to have discovered Serenade Radio. Listen on my smart speaker and the audio quality is very good, better than some commercial stations. Always my kind of music and filling a niche for us oldies after BBC Radio 2 no longer plays easy listening music. I am intrigued to know whether Music While You Work are new recordings or rescued from the BBC archives?
Brian Reynolds on 15 February 2024
Music While You Work was a live show which ran without a break from 1940 to 1967 and for most of this time was broadcast twice on weekdays and once on Saturdays. It had several revivals in the early 1980s and early 1990s. Most of the shows which you hear on Serenade Radio were originally broadcast ‘Live’ between 1958 and 1967 on the old “Light Programme” plus some editions from the revival series. The BBC didn’t keep any for posterity – so everything you hear has been privately preserved! Wouldn’t it be lovely if there were dozens of professional bands and orchestras actually broadcasting this music today! Sadly times have changed and today’s youngsters no longer get to hear this lovely music – unless they listen to Serenade Radio, of course!
Helen on 15 February 2024

Congratulations on 9 years to my favourite radio station . Listening all the way in the Caribbean .
Alan Jowett on 14 February 2024
John Hellings, Hour of Jazz covers the whole spectrum of jazz genres. Its up there with the Best of Jazz which Humphrey Lyttleton hosted for many years on Radio 2. John’s programme is far better than Radio 2s Jazz Show with Jamie Cullum which has a heavy emphasis on the latest trends and is poorly presented.
John Hellings on 20 February 2024
Thank you Alan for your kind comments. Praise indeed! I do try and choose the music that suits those who identify with the music of the time. If it’s more modern, then the sound has to be complementary. So glad you’re enjoying what you’re hearing.
Sandra Shofner on 14 February 2024

Dave in London on 14 February 2024
For the quizzical Mr Marriott today: the song Avalon co-written by Al Jolson has the words “I found my love in Avalon beside the bay”. It’s all about the island of Santa Catalina with its main town Avalon, about thirty miles off the coast of Long Beach California. It had a reputation for romantic escapes. Poor old Mr Jolson and his pals were taken to court by Giacomo Puccini’s publishers ‘cos the melody was said to resemble Puccini’s “And the Stars Were Shining”. Lots of money and subsequent royalties were awarded to Mr P’s estate.
That was a fine version by Billy Ternent’s Orchestra you played today, ta v much.
The Dinning Sisters do a highly acceptable rendition of “Santa Catalina, Island of Romance”, worth a listen.
All the best to you.
Ian Hall on 14 February 2024

I used to be a huge Radio 2 fan back in the day,, that being the days of Terry Wogan, Ray Moore, Jimmy Young, John Dunn, David Hamilton et al.. Days long gone.. I gave up on Radio 2 years ago when it became a clone of Radio 1.. a souless rehash of many other stations.. I tried to give the likes of ‘Smooth Radio’, ‘Gold’, ‘Greatest Hits’ etc a go, but found them all to be repetitive copies of each other repeating the same songs ad infinitum.. AND THEN today I discovered ‘Serenade Radio’ purely by chance.. HA! wonderful.. My life is now complete!! Thank you for merely existing.. and playing Proper Music. Also for using what sounds like classic PAMS, and JAMS jingles.. Long may you thrive..
Mark Thompson on 10 February 2024
Hello I’m thinking of buying myself a new DAB radio. Will I be able to get Serenade radio on it. Thank you for such a lovely radio station.
Andy Marriott, Station Manager on 10 February 2024
Hi Mark,
I’m afraid the answer is no. DAB would cost us hundreds of thousands a year.
Which would mean we’d be over-run with commercials to pay for it. That would lead to directors, boardrooms, take-overs and all that!
I realise that we are rather limited by being online only but it allows us to run on a volunteer/donation basis and not get involved in “business”!
Might I suggest a fancy smart speaker instead of a DAB radio, they can sound really nice, better than some DAB streams. Most, if not all, stations you’ll get on DAB have an online stream too…
Thanks for getting in touch, glad to hear that you like what we do.
Diz on 10 February 2024
A Londoner living and listening in NZ, the music is great.

I am not happy with your Radio station.
Since I discovered it this week I have wasted so much time listening to it. I so enjoy it that I now don’t do anything else except tune into it.
I’m also upset that you never contacted me or made me aware of it sooner. Many thanks for such a lovely way to spend the day listening to your station. You’ve now got a convert.
Dave from at times sunny Donny on 10 February 2024
A week has now passed since I accidentally came across this terrific radio station SERENADE and its great presenters.
Unfortunately I am terminally ill with the big “C” so for me listening to SERENADE is a HUGE, HUGE tonic and a great medicine for me to listen to ALL the great singers and orchestral music that comes along the air waves, so please keep this FABULOUS MUSIC that keeps me refreshingly positive.
Thank you ALL presenters
My wholeheartedly best wishes to you all👍👏😀
Andy Marriott on 10 February 2024
Hi Dave,
Very sorry to hear of your health issues.
Delighted to hear that Serenade Radio is helping to keep your pecker up, as they say!
We will most certainly do as you ask and continue to play all this fabulous and largely ignored music.
All the best.

The music Steve James plays is absolutely amazing…not to mention…cool…hip…and trendy. If you want to be in with the in crowd…then this is essential listening. I swear that somewhere between 7.30 and 10 I travel back to the late 60’s? There is no other way to start your Saturday and Sunday!!

I just heard Andy Marriot say that there is nobody young around here. I have to correct that. I’m a 27 year old listening in America and I love the sounds on Serenade! I’ve been listening for the past couple years now and find this station a blessing. So, yes, you have one younger person who enjoys it around here. Thanks to Mark Steyn for introducing me to this wonderful place. It has made a music lover of me. I’ve listened to nearly all the content in 2023. Dance Band Days, Vic Groves, Dick Fisher, Peter Tomlinson, and Andy Marriot’s flagship show are among my favorites. I find the commentary worthwhile and enjoyable. I like it. I equally love the classic popular music you’ve introduced to me. I’ve learned to know many songs that I wasn’t familiar with. For instance I find the songs from the English catalogue, particularly British dance band music, charming. I also like hearing again some favorite old songs that I already happened to discover for myself over the past several years of my life. I have always enjoyed old time entertainment and I get to hear from that treasured era on here. Serenade is truly a refuge. May God bless everyone here!
Barbara Heathcote on 6 February 2024
Thank you for playing Vic Damone tonight. Can I recommend his version of All things you Are, his voice at the end of the song is so beautiful, really reaches the high notes.
Suzy on 6 February 2024
I’ve listened to Serenade all day, every day for months now. Like an old friend from an era when we weren’t put in listener categories by age and could all enjoy a wide range of quality easy listening music. Especially love waking up to gentle Ed’s dawn chorus at the weekend and funny Andy every weekday. Thanks everyone x
Helen on 6 February 2024
It was lovely hearing Vera Lynn sing – There’ll Always Be An England this morning, Wonderful.
Suzy on 6 February 2024
Yes, wonderful … but sad too. As Andy said after, that’s a different England she was singing about.
Andy Grahamme on 5 February 2024
Fantastic station..by far and away the best since the golden days of Radio 2 back in the 80s. In fact..exactly what Radio 2 should have become. Unfortunately they totally lost the plot…but now? Who cares!!

I have only just discovered Serenade but it transports me back to another less stressful world . A time when neighbours cared a time when you can hear clearly the lyrics of a song. A time of modesty and less narcissism less ‘look at me’. Thank you . you have calmed my world

Thank you.

Listening to David Yarnall playing Beatles songs by Keely Smith, I love Beatles songs and I like Kelly Smith but this just doesn’t work. The tempo is wrong and it just doesn’t suit voice. Sorry but a NO!! from. Love the programme though.
David Yarnall on 5 March 2024
Hi Julia. A bit delayed with a reply but whilst you didn’t like the Keeley Smith track, I’m glad you enjoyed everything else. Music can be somewhat subjective but we do our best.

I’m listening to Dick Fisher who has just played a Clifford T Ward song. I just wanted to say how much I love his songs, and hope to hear them again soon!!
Dick Fisher on 3 February 2024
Clifford is a much less well recognised songwriter/singer than he deserved. I interviewed him on a number of occasions (with his wife in attendance) and found him charming, unassuming and modest. Rare qualities in one so absurdly talented. Will try to include more of his lovely work in the future.
Adrian on 31 January 2024
What a great Radio station you are. You play all the kinds of music I enjoy listening to especially Light Orchestral Music which you never hear on the radio much now.
I just cannot believe there is a Radio station that play all this wonderful music from the past lots of what people have forgotten about. So it GOODBYE RADIO 2 FOR EVER.
As I write this I am listening to music box how great to hear these Orchestra’s love it and the great singers on other programmes. Didn’t ever think a beautiful station would ever come.
Simon McLean on 2 February 2024
Hello Adrian – thanks for the nice words about Music Box. I’m always delighted (and a bit surprised) to hear when other people enjoy this music as much as I do! Thank you for listening!

From Canada. Burns Night Request…Not sure if any presenter would play a Peter Sellers song “The Hunting of The Haggis”
Heard it on BBC sometime before 1982.
Dave in London on 25 January 2024
An unusual play by Dick Fisher today – Clopin Clopant. Well, not unusual in your actual France where it’s a standard of the late forties and fifties. Ms Streisand was brave to have a go at it in English while retaining its French title which is one of those onomatopoeic things – the sound of someone with an ambling gait walking on cobblestones. Wandering aimless through life when recently abandoned by a lover. Thanks for playing it today Dick, you have reminded me of all the good versions in French, plus the Sinatra update of 1949 “Comme Ci, Comme Ça” which some might say offers a better translation of the writer’s thoughts. All the best to you.
Paul - Rye, East Sussex on 25 January 2024
What a treat! Duke Ellington’s “Spanish Flea” – so good to hear this version again; thanks David Yarnall, always enjoy your show, the perfect whimsical afternoon accompaniment.

Thank you Paul. I’m glad you enjoyed that track and it seems you enjoy all the others as well. Must see someone about my whimsicals!!
Steve in Worcs. on 25 January 2024
Good afternoon Sernade community,
I was listening into The Boss this morning at 8:00 m, and as the wonderful Mr.Ray Moore might have said, it seems you had a touch of the “rasping clack”. Well, I don’t know if the remedy as anothe Ray saying: ‘A pint of bitter in a warm glass, and a fist full of wet change thank you, barman.’ 😊 Either way, hope you’re feeling better soon, Andy.
Adrian Long on 29 January 2024
Nice to see someone actually remember Ray Moore he was a good pop jockey make laugh always.

Tom Colmey on 21 January 2024
Serenade is such a fantastic concept. It has become an old friend who pops round to bring an oasis of calm (especially to the start of the day). I especially love early Sunday mornings……..a cuppa and Serenade Radio………..perfect. Long May it continue 👍
Nick Hingley on 21 January 2024
Wow! I have just heard Dionne Warwick’s ‘Living in a Land of Paper Mache’ on Kevin’s show. I loved this record when it came out in 1970 and heard it a lot on Radio Luxembourg. However, I can’t remember hearing it on the radio since. Was still at school back then but had developed a taste for Bacharach & David work
Always, plenty of surprises on Serenade and love the selections in Kevin’s shows.
Kevin Taylor on 21 January 2024
Hi Nick, I’m glad you enjoyed “Paper Mache” by Dionne Warwick. The Bacharach/David repertoire is immense and there are some really great selections as you know. Thank you for checking in and listening to Serenade Radio!

Hello Simon,
Just having a look on the internet, and I see Nick Barbarossa and his Orchestra did make another album, called Sounds Ltd.
There is a copy on eBay, it is in Germany, available to the UK, item number 354914414767.
I hope this helps.
Thanks as always to all involved for continued broadcasting excellence.
Simon McLean on 22 January 2024
Thank you, Steve – Nick Barbarossa is one of those fascinating curios, the music is wonderful but info on what it’s about is very elusive! I believe Nick is an alias for German musician Peter Moesser, who made many records under his own name in his home country. Thanks for listening, as always!
Bob Pfile on 20 January 2024
Cindy asked why they called “The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly” and their ilk Spaghetti Westerns. As I recall, they were produced by Sergio Leone in Italy.

Great line up all day but special mention for Steve James…just amazing music…Jeff Owen…such a talented unique and entertaining presenter..and at midday…Stuart Linnell..superb presentation and simply the best music!! Serenade Radio? The best radio station by a country mile!!!
Paul Kennedy on 18 January 2024
Hi David,
Still tuning in your afternoon show each day at 9am here in Nova Scotia. Thanks for the nice mix of
great singers, wonderful variety of songs, and your oft times (sometimes) witty banter. Your program is
a flashback to the way personal radio used to be. Favorite singers include Cliff Richard, Petula Clark
and Perry Como. Keep up the excellent work… take good care … Paul Kennedy
Martin …… keep up the excellent work.
Gordon Davies on 18 January 2024
Someone on FB told me to try your station and I’m hooked! I’m listening now, but do you play pre-war and wartime music too?
Andy Marriott, Station Manager on 18 January 2024
Hi Gordon,
Glad you’ve found us, and like what you hear.
We do play a fair amount of 30s and 40s music scattered across our general programmes.
But for a real treat try tuning in on Saturdays at 7pm and Mondays at 9pm for a whole hour of nothing but 20s, 30s and 40s tunes. Its “The Dance Band Days” with Roger Williams, you’ll love it!
Alan Richardson on 15 January 2024
The best in easy listening. Appreciated by many.
Vanessa Dowsett on 15 January 2024
I do love this station and I have told many younger people about Serenade Radio and they too now love listening . Many thanks to all concerned, it makes my long wakeful nights so much shorter.
Karen on 14 January 2024
Peter Tomlinson’s programme is such a delight on a Sunday afternoon. I cannot imagine a more perfect way to relax on a Sunday afternoon before the grind of another working week starts tomorrow. And he has such a lovely calm voice… I reckon if he read a story to us every night it might help lots of us sleep better 😉
Barry Trimmer on 14 January 2024
I have just found your music station and am delighted with it. It’s many years since I have heard so many great tunes of my youth. Many thanks.
Martyn Bassey on 13 January 2024
Many thanks to Sean Usher for the Late Show. Two hours of fabulous music and banter. Just perfect for this time of the day 😊
Jackie Newark on 11 January 2024
Don’t know what I would do without Serenade Radio – thank you to everyone involved.
Alan Jowett on 10 January 2024
Looking at the recent Facebook post with the weekday programmes from 9-10……..Excellent. This compares to the days of the Light Programme and the first couple of decades of BBC Radio 2. But while that station now only has a couple of decent shows and able presenters, Serenade Radio sets a high standard round the clock, seven days a week.
David Purll on 10 January 2024
Roger,
I don’t know whether if she’d fit your programme but could I suggest “Let the mystery be” by Iris Dement. Just been introduced to this lovely song
Martyn Bassey on 8 January 2024
Fabulous music on the Kevin Taylor Show this Sunday. Must have been mind-blowing to be invited by the wonderful Keely Smith to sing a duet with her on stage. Many thanks Kevin.
Dave in London on 7 January 2024
That nice chap Mr Marriot asked us to remind him, once the Christmas lights had all been put away, about Riem and Ruud de Wolf, better known to many as The Blue Diamonds. Here is your reminder alert Mr M! Their recently released compilation ‘Singles & B-sides 1959-1977’ fills in some of the songs missing on their Greatest Hits albums. But whatever you decide to choose, I’m looking forward to hearing them on Serenade Radio.
David Purll on 7 January 2024
What a splendid show is Jeff Owen’s oldies show on Saturday mornings.. the bestof the currently available oldies’/60s Saturday shows by far. Hie doesn’t play the obvious but just a well curated and interesting selection of great music. Thanks Jeff
James Pickering on 6 January 2024
For what it’s worth, I think Serenade Radio is actually a lot better than “radio as it used to be”. It’s consistently brilliant, all day, every day, which is more than can be said for the radio we grew up with.

Well said that man!
Edgar on 19 January 2024
I’m not sure I’m replying to the right comment. Anyway, this music is better than what I used to listen to on radio stations. Most of the stations playing this style of music mixed it with more contemporary tunes, which was fine because that was what I was used to. Now, nearly all the stations in the States, even the ones I can find online, play only a few of these songs with the more contemporary sound.
John Taousanis on 6 January 2024
To Jeff Owen,
Dear Jeff,
My wife and I would like to send a big thank you, from Salonica in Greece, for you wonderful program on Saturday mornings.
It is the absolute highlight of our week, and we will not miss your show for the world.
Please keep up the good work!
Best regards from Greece.

Thank you for the fabulous programmes on serenade radio, I used to listen to my local radio station but found they got rid of all the presenters i loved and replaced them with ……..well what can I say! certainly not my type of music! The Christmas music that you played during December was great to listen to and it was lovely that it didn’t stop on Christmas day, I really cannot say how much I enjoy serenade radio and am pleased that someone cares for the older generation and plays the music they like . Thank you so much one and all
peter paul mangan on 5 January 2024
Andy talking about the winter of 1947,my late mother often talked about the winter of 1947,before my time but 1962/63 was a bad one too.We still had to go to school,in short trousers too.
GARY T. on 4 January 2024
The TV show was the best yet. Delighted to hear that there will be more later in the year. Happy New Year.
Vanessa-Ann Dowsett on 2 January 2024
I loved the TV show on New Year’s Day and was sad when it finished as a weekly slot. May I please ask if this programme will be repeated? Thank you Andy and all of the presenters for such an excellent station. Happy New Year to all at the station and the listeners.
Serenade Radio on 2 January 2024
Hi Vanessa-Ann, Andy did mention it at the end of the show. He will be back with a new series later this year.
Vanessa-Ann Dowsett on 4 January 2024
Thank you for your reply, my problem was that I missed the last 5 mins so I missed Andy’s good news. I am delighted , it does bring back so many memories
Janet on 1 January 2024
I wish you all a very happy and healthy new year. I’d like to thank you all for all the music in 2023; I’m looking forward to more of the same in 2024.
I’d particularly like to say thank you for the Soft Folkus shows on Sunday evenings, for the Dawn Chorus programmes on Saturday and Sunday mornings and for the Andy Marriott TV themes programmes. I wish some or all of these were available to listen again; is that possible?
Lots of love and best wishes to you all.
Roger Williams on 1 January 2024
Hello Janet, I’m really chuffed that you like Soft Folkus and and the other shows you mention. I know that there is a demand for a “listen again” feature but I think Andy will say that the resources available to Serenade won’t allow for this step to be taken. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for Soft Folkus – if you have I shall do my best to follow them up. Happy New Year and thank you for your support. Roger W
David Hilton on 1 January 2024

Just discovered Serenade Radio, within only the last couple of hours through a roundabout mention on ‘X’ by Mark Steyn. Southern California listener here. After more than forty years, I again invested in a rather premium audiophile listening system (…several British components!) and only JUST NOW fully realized what a GOOD decision that was! This is such a delightful experience, with incredible and beautifully crafted recordings! At UK Time 23:25 I see that the New Year 2024 literally standing at your front door, ringing the bell. Be well, be blessed…and THANK YOU!
Peter Coulson on 31 December 2023
Looking forward to tonight’s New Year’s Eve show with Andy Marriott, such a great presenter! He reminds me of the late great Ray Moore, who as I expect many of you know used to do a great New Years Eve show back in the day!🙂

I would like to the echo the comments about the continuing Christmas music beyond Christmas Day. Having had to endure Christmas telly on Christmas Day, today I have been enjoying a ‘Christmas’ day on my own relaxing in the Festive spirit with Serenade Radio.
I suspect, like many of a certain vintage, I remember when Christmas didn’t end at midnight on the 25th and like to observe the twelve days of Christmas. I can guarantee that my modest outdoor Christmas lights which were put up later than than the others in my road will be the only ones still lit at Epiphany/Twelfth Night – most won’t make it to new year’s eve. I remember as a child the Christmas parties and get togethers that often occurred on Boxing Day and beyond into early January and the special daytime programming on TV between Christmas Day and new year at a time when TV was usually confined to the evening; and that January 5th (or 6th – there were often debates about which on the radio Radio 4 or the Home Service – Cindy Kent may be able to elaborate) was a day of sadness when the decorations and tree came down and the gaiety was at an end.
I note that Andy made a comment about the loss of the Twelve Days on today’s programme which chimed with me. That mainstream radio gives up on Christmas music after the 25th is mainly that they are beholden to their advertisers and it is this industry that has determined that Christmas now starts the day after Bonfire night and ends on the night of the 25th. On Boxing Day their advertising clients now have other products to flog. Of course the BBC gives up too – but they have long given up on the likes of us anyway!
Anyway, Happy Continuing Christmas to all the team at Serenade Radio; thank you for this wonderful station; and a Happy and Healthy New Year to all!
David Beaver on 28 December 2023
Loved the Christmas Heroes show. A superb selection of music and presenters who were so much a part of my childhood and early adulthood. Better than most of the telly over Christmas. Please repeat next Christmas.
Brian Bunn on 26 December 2023
Andy & Team, really enjoying the non-stop Christmas 🎄☃️ music. So good to hear quality retro songs and carols by different artists, many that I’ve not heard before, and the Christmas instrumentals are fantastic 😊 Also well done for continuing Christmas songs on Boxing Day when other Radio stations appear to be frightened to ! So pleased that you have kept to songs from 30’s/40’s/50’s/60’s etc, not 70’s, 80’s and modern, which are played to death on other stations. Enjoy the rest of your Christmas, and Happy New Year to all at Serenade Radio.
Roger Sweet on 26 December 2023
Many thanks for beautiful Christmas music 🎶 including carols Christmas night/Boxing day. Keep it going please. When I was in Spain Christmas music carols etc were played on street tannoys from Advent November Epiphany January

Serenade Radio making Christmas special. On my own today it could’ve been just another day like all the rest
The music and friendship of those bringing it to us me is very much appreciated.
So glad I am able to listen on this ancient mobile now that my lovely internet radio(its complicated)does everything but internet radio.
Next year year I will looking into an alternative way to hear you again. And a new mobile. Also a tablet or laptop.
It will hurt my pocket but the benefit to my wellbeing is immeasurable. And hopefully they will last for a decent amount of time.
Thank you again and to all Serenade Radio listeners. A Happy Christmas too.

Steve James on 18 December 2023
Thank you very much Martyn, I’m so pleased you like the music choices. The show really is a labour of love. Next weekend I’ll be including some rare tracks with a wintry feel which I hope you will enjoy. There will be a touch of frost in the perfumed garden…!

Laying on the sofa in the dark with the Christmas tree lights on listening to the Dawn Chorus is pretty perfect. Thank you for the Messiah track. Beautiful. Happy Christmas Ed. Thank you for a brilliant show…you have made weekend lie ins a thing of the past.
Ed Wellman on 17 December 2023
Happy Christmas Karen, thank you for being part of the Dawn Chorus and your kind words. You’ve prompted me to get the tree decorated so I can do the same this week whilst listening to Cindy with her hour of carols from 6. Who needs a lie in anyway?!

It was lovely to hear Deanna Durbin tonight, I first her sing Nessun Dorma in the Film His Butler’s Sister before it became popular by Pavarotti.
Edward Marples on 15 December 2023
Could anyone please tell me what Andy Marriot played as the vintage tune at 07.30am this Friday morning.

I really love John’s Jazz Hour… a superbly curated and presented selection of so much good music!
John Hutley on 12 December 2023
As we approach the end of another year, may I heartily congratulate Andy and all the team at Serenade Radio for a superb 2023. The music is, of course, what attracts us in the first instance but undoubtedly, in my opinion, each and every one of the presenters deserve the highest praise for the obvious enthusiasm and dedication they put into their shows as well as the manner in which they communicate those assets to us, their listeners.
Serenade Radio – the station where the presenters talk TO their audience not AT them!
Best wishes to all of you and here’s hoping for a successful 2024.
MR JOHN HUGGETT on 12 December 2023
How about Margaret Whiting I can’t remember anything played by her?
Andy Marriott, Station Manager on 12 December 2023
Hi John,
I think this is a case of very bad timing!
We play Margaret Whiting songs every couple of days on Serenade Radio!
Sooner or later we’ll play one when you are tuned in 🙂
All the best.
Anne W on 14 December 2023
John Huggette hope you were tuned into John Darvalls show today 😊. Three in a row from Margaret Whiting😎 what a treat❤️ 👏🏻

Brian Bunn on 11 December 2023
Hi Andy, really looking forward to your non-stop Christmas 🎄☃️songs 🎵 from next Monday 😊. Those songs from the 40’s/50’/60’s are such a refreshing change from the same rubbish played to death on other radio stations ! It’s so good to hear different versions of retro Christmas 🎄☃️ music by different artists, and the Christmas “instrumentals” are superb 😊.
Keep up the good work Andy, your radio station is so appreciated. Happy Christmas 🎄☃️ to you and everyone else at Serenade
Martyn Bassey on 10 December 2023
I don’t know where Steve James finds the songs for his Saturday night show. All I know is that I enjoy hearing these obscure gems. I really liked the Shona Laing song he played last night. Hidden treasures indeed. Many thanks Mr James 👍
Su Roys on 9 December 2023
I have sent you a little something to keep you in tea and mince pies this festive season, in grateful thanks for the wonderful weekend Dawn Chorus. Merry Christmas to you all. Best Wishes, Su
Paul Allen on 9 December 2023
Good evening Mr Usher… sounding great fella!!
Stephen Wassell on 8 December 2023
Andy Marriott’s programme is a daily joy and I refuse to get up until I’ve heard the daily “nonsense” at 08.30. I love the way he always says “under the big W” after a Durante song and “that was ghastly!” following ” The Little Red Monkey”. You have brought a great deal of pleasure to someone who used to listen avidly to the Light Programme. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
PS. I too thought Ray Moore was an incomparably brilliant presenter taken far too young. God Bless him.
peter paul mangan on 6 December 2023
Andy Marriott’s comments about Ray Moore were so true,he was a wonderful and much missed broadcaster, fortunately for us,Andy is top presenter too.
Wendy on 8 December 2023
That is so true Peter. When i was a student and really homesick ( a ‘few’years ago now😉) the brilliant Ray Moore was so important every day when i woke up. Setting the day perfectly. Andy is very much like him. So we re very lucky. I would love to hear a programme about Ray in the Radio Heroes series.
David Yarnall on 13 December 2023
Wendy, I worked with Ray Moore for a couple of weeks on Radio 2 in the mid 80s. Everyone moved up a slot so Ray followed me at the end of The Early Show and the first time I chatted to him during the handover from my programme to his was a wonderful moment. I had a chat with him in his studio off air and he was so generous in his comments and a lovely man. Every time I play any version of “For all we know” on my programme I think of Ray. Great guy, top broadcaster and so missed.
Hazel on 6 December 2023
The Billy Cotton Band Show will bring back memories! How about some Uncle Mac Children’s Favourites & Housewives Choice and Workers Playtime too,oh and could Sing Something Simple on Sundays last an hour as half hour is too short. Love all the old programmes I grew up with on the Light Programme as it was back then. Love Serenade Radio & I’m so glad you don’t have adverts like commercial radio.
Brian Bunn on 11 December 2023
Excellent ideas Hazel, thoroughly agree 👍
john Harrison on 5 December 2023
up to recent times we had a splendid radio programme from Radio Lancashire hosted by Gerald Jackson called Unforgettable which played a similar genre to yourselves. This programme was axed by the BBC after being a success for nearly 20 years and whilst I understand that thier problems were caused by this wretched government I still agree with your mission statement that they kind of music I like has disappeared when presenter have died or retired no Dewi Griffiths, Ronnie Hilton, Alan Keith, and many more So I was delighted to find you I will recommend you and am now asking for my licence fee to be rescinded, officially because I am over 75, but really because the BBC no longer represent my taste and consequently no longer value for money and when that is approved I will share it with you, because having volunteered in our community for 20 years I know how tigh.t money can be
Ian (Leicestershire) on 5 December 2023
Three consecutive miserable weather Monday afternoons (20th & 27th Nov & 4th Dec) each one brightened up by the wonderful offerings from John Darvall. From Blue Tango on the 20th to All in the World by Kathy Kirby just now (Yes, I know its Tuesday today!) These 3 hour broadcasts are the longest on Serenade each day but John certainly keeps the standard high ! as indeed do all of your presenters !
Nick Hingley on 4 December 2023
Really enjoyed Soft Folkus Sunday 3 December.
Re suggestions for Christmas theme songs I suggest ‘River’ by Joni Mitchell.
Roger Williams on 5 December 2023
Hello Nick,
Lovely to hear from you. Excellent suggestion! I’ll schedule it for Christmas Eve and may even slip it in this week too. Can’t have enough Joni!
Nick Hingley on 26 December 2023
Hello Roger
Great to hear Joni – and first up a couple of weeks ago! – and then again on Christmas Eve. Great selection whilst waiting for Santa to arrive. Enjoyed the seasonal Dance Band Days too (rever miss the programme and often think of dear old Malcolm Laycock.) Happy New Year!
John Abbott on 4 December 2023
We often wake in a cloud this time of year. At two thousand feet above sea level in the Great Smoky Mountains of western North Carolina USA the heavenly vistas are completed with the heavenly sound of Sernade Radio! Thank you!
Arthur on 3 December 2023
How lovely to hear ‘and the glory of the lord’ on Ed”s show this morning. I am constantly amazed by the diversity of music played on this little gem of a show.
Ed Wellman on 3 December 2023
Thank you, Arthur. Glad you enjoyed the Handel chorus, it tootles along with a nice bounce doesn’t it. Shortly will adding some new ‘gems’ (I hope) to the Dawn Chorus music library. Stay warm and extra mugs of coffee all round for dawn choristers today I think!
Sandra Shofner on 3 December 2023
✨ Happy Anniversary ✨
May you and your wife be richly blessed with many more wonderful years ahead! Greetings from Fort Lauderdale, Florida 🌴☀️
Stuart Linnell on 3 December 2023
Sandra, how lovely of you to send your message for my wife and I. Good of you to get in touch, I hope all is well in Fort Lauderdale, and that you enjoy listening to Serenade Radio.
Alan Jowett on 2 December 2023
There are so many genres catered for on Serenade Radio. Perhaps you might occasionally feature selections by brass bands as many Radio 2 listeners are still missing programmes like Listen to the Band. I enjoy tracks by big bands that feature excellent brass players but as Christmas approaches you might play some festive music by say a Salvation Army band or a similar line-up.
John Harrison J&J on 5 December 2023
are you the Alan Jowett whose name appeared on Unforgettable
Martyn Bassey on 2 December 2023
Brilliant entertainment throughout the early hours of Saturday. Many thanks to Sean Usher, Ed Wellman, and Johnny McAtasney. 👍😊
Johnny Mac on 2 December 2023
Thank you again, Martyn. Glad to have you tuning in.
Anthony Parkin on 2 December 2023
Why now. My expensive internet radio won’t access internet radio. It could but the manufacturer’s partner has started asking for a monthly subscription fee.
And without you cannot access any internet radio. So the radio is now a doorstop.
Now to decide if I pay up. Look at smart speakers or some other alternative. Simplistic. It seems I can buy two and set them up so one plays the left sounds and the other the right. Creating stereo.
Then other option seems to be you buy one and with the right cable relay the sound through PC speakers. A hi-fi.
Ironically I think that I can connect a smart speaker to this obsolete radio and play it through its speakers.
I hope I am back soon…missing you.
(My phone is ready to die too)
Anthony Parkin on 2 December 2023
Temporary reprieve. Just to get my hopes up. Why did I try the radio 24 hours later. Everything is working again. Even limited use would work for me if some features are withdrawn. Happy for now.
Andy Grahamme on 2 December 2023
Stuart Linnell…Saturdays at noon. Such a smashing programme. The music is always a delight and Stuart has a lovely style of presentation. Serenade Radio is just an absolute joy!

Love the comment about Christmas lists Dick. My husband only says ‘ surprise me l’ when i ask . But he apparently needs me to tell him what i want !!
David Bownes on 29 November 2023
Dick Fisher just played “The show is Over” and he couldn’t find who wrote it , it was Petula Clark , one of the many songs she wrote
Dick Fisher on 29 November 2023
Thank you David. Quite often the internet will suggest that a performer actually wrote a song they’re associated with, so I treat such info carefully! I wasn’t aware of Pet’s songwriting skills, but your comments have inspired me to do some more reading about her career.
David Bownes on 29 November 2023
She wrote or co-wrote over 75 songs , some were by herself , some with others such as Tony Hatch. A lot were in French, she also put English lyrics to French and German songs and vice verse, a very talented lady and a lovely person
Really enjoy your show and all the information surrounding the songs and singers that I never knew
Nick Hingley on 27 November 2023
I have just listened to the repeat of Dance Band Days and can confirm that The Seekers did indeed record ‘Open Up Them Pearly Gates’. It is on either the B side of ‘I’ll Never Find Another You’ or ‘Morningtown Ride’ (I rather think the former) though I would have to dig out my box of 45s to confirm which. Actually, it’s not surprising that The Seekers should have recorded it as they started out as a gospel-cum-folk style group – the turning point in their popularity being their involvement with Tom Springfield.
Alan Jowett on 2 December 2023
One reason that The Seekers put traditional folk songs such as Open Up Them Pearly Gates on their B sides was that by lifting the arrangement under their own names they earned royalties which would be the same as for the the composer of the A side.
Alexander Gleason on 27 November 2023
To Adrian Jackson – I expect many have mentioned it, by now. Alan Perry is of course a pseudonym for the great Ernest Tomlinson- founder of the Light music Society and composer of the classic ‘Little Serenade’ plus over 200 other lovely pieces of light music, under his own and other nom-de-plumes
Angus on 27 November 2023
Listening from the US southwestern desert and this is the best internet radio ever. I especially loved Soft Folkus today. Thanks and my best to everyone that makes this listening experience possible.
Roger Williams on 27 November 2023
Angus, thank you for your kind comments, which are much appreciated – I enjoy putting Soft Folkus together with a mix of older material and the occasional newer release. Feel free to suggest artists that you think might suit the show. Roger W
Ian Hall on 26 November 2023
Another great Soft Folkus… Roger Williams has really captured the mood for a relaxing Sunday evening. I know nothing about the folk scene but I do enjoy this show immensely. Thanks.
Roger Williams on 27 November 2023
Ian, that is such a lovely comment! You may find this strange but I have an immense amount of difficulty defining what folk music is. I’m very much guided by my own ears and a fair bit of the show goes beyond what many would count as folk. I do try and create a certain mood on a Sunday night and I’m sure I don’t always get it right. Comments like yours meanso much, especially as I sometimes play music that no-one else will. Roger
Brian Reynolds on 26 November 2023
Being old enough to remember the ‘Golden Age of Light Music! on radio and the regular live broadcasts by light orchestras and ensembles, I was bound to regard Adrian Jackson’s series “Evergreen” as essential listening.
On Friday, he played us a piece by Alan Perry (perhaps an unfamiliar name to many listeners) Well, Adrian might be interested to know that “Alan Perry” was the pseudonym for one of light music’s “legends” – Ernest Tomlinson!
Ernest once told me that he used the name on pieces which (he felt) fell below his usual standard! Actually I thought that some of them were amongst his best! I mentioned to him a particular favourite “Mississippi Melody”. He responded “Oh – that was easy!”. I responded “for you, maybe- but most people would not know where to start!”
Give it a try-Adrian!
David Purll on 26 November 2023
Roger, if you could include it sometime in the next few editions, how about ” That’ll be Christmas ” by Thea Gilmore, thank you …
Roger Williams on 27 November 2023
Hi David, that sounds like a great suggestion, thank you. I’ll be doing Soft Folkus on Christmas Eve and will probably introduce seasonal songs the week before as well. Hope you’re well, don’t overdo it eh?

Thank you for playing Perry Como (‘Papa Loves Mambo’)! Happily listening in Fort Lauderdale, Florida (U.S.A.). Thank you very much for such great programming. Very best wishes to you for a safe, healthy, and wonderful holiday season.

Thank you, Sandi, for listening to our night-time programmes and best wishes from this side of the pond.

Hi Guys,
Just had to send you a message to say how much i love being tuned into Serenade Radio 24/7! Steve in Worcs. on 23 November 2023
Hello Mark,
A fellow radio fan here, and you’ve mentioned the names of Titans there that I loved listening to😎 Did you catch the Radio Heroes series of 6 programmes in the Summer, presented by Peter Tomlinson? I missed two of them, and unfortunately, the station licence doesn’t allow for a ‘catch-up feature’ (as I understand it), so I would love to hear a repeat! There is talk of a second series. What a station this is! 😎
Andy Marriott on 23 November 2023
There will be a Radio Heroes Christmas Special on Christmas day at 5pm. It will feature all of the ‘heroes’ of series one in festive mood.
Series one will be repeated on Thursday evenings at 9.30 beginning on January 4th.
Series two is planned for later in 2024.
Steve in Worcs. on 25 November 2023
Wonderful news, many thanks for your reply, Andy.
Anne W on 21 November 2023
I love the album of the week ❤️ what a brilliant idea 💡 bravo 👏🏻
Tom Ashmore on 20 November 2023
Kathy Kirby is Catherine and her sister must be Kathleen. Hope that sorts it
Karen on 19 November 2023
What a great soft folkus tonight. Duncan Brown, Janis Ian, Fairport Convention, Nineberrow to name but a few and to cap it all one of my favourite songs Persuasion by Richard and Teddy Thompson. Thank you Roger. Fabulous
show. By the way…. India Electric Co. have a new single out called After the Flood… it’s very good.. 😉
Roger Williams on 22 November 2023
Thanks Karen, your support means a lot. It still feels like a challenge keeping the show fresh each week. But there again I’m still building up the Soft Folkus library. More suggestions welcome!
Steve in Worcs. on 18 November 2023
Another superb Dance Band Days show, Roger, for which thanks so much again (and The Boss of course!)
Simon up next….😎
Roger Williams on 22 November 2023
Thank you Steve. I can’t stress enough that Dance Band Days is very much a team effort. I provide the voice but John Wright is the expert behind the scenes – and that man Marriot has something to do with it too!
Steve in Worcs. on 25 November 2023
Hello Roger, yes perfectly understood, I usually include ‘anyone associated with the programme’ but I seem to have been remiss on this occasion. Apologies to anyone I may have missed.
Karen on 18 November 2023
What do you do when your mind is racing and sleep is eluding you? … you stay awake and listen to Serenade Radio, that’s what you do. Thank you Dick Fisher, Simon Maclean, Sean Usher and now Johnny Mac. It’s been brilliant so far … And the night would be very long without you .
Johnny Mac on 18 November 2023
Hi Karen. A Little Night Music would be very lonely without your good self! Thank you for tuning in to me and my meanderings!
Martyn Bassey on 18 November 2023
Great comment. I always look forward to listening to all these fab shows on Saturday morning. Thanks Johnny for playing Human Jungle by John Barry. I have the series on DVD! 😃
Johnny Mac on 18 November 2023
Good ol Herbert Lom. More than just Dreyfuss. Many thanks again for your support, Martyn. Until next Saturday at 3am – the best time of the week!
Martyn Bassey on 17 November 2023
Thanks to John Darvall for a great show today and three of the best from Edna Savage. What a fabulous singer she was.
Carole Jenks on 17 November 2023
Do you broadcast from a studio or from your homes – love it all the way from Australia
Andy Marriott on 17 November 2023
Hi Carole,
We all present our programmes from the comfort of our homes, in some cases sat up in bed!
Being funded by donations we could never afford premises and all that posh studio equipment.
I hope you don’t feel that SR sounds in anyway amateurish as a result of the tight budget…
All the best,
AM.
Edgar on 18 November 2023
The DJs refer to going in the music library. Where is that, then? From The States.
Serenade Radio on 24 November 2023
Like most things nowadays its an online/digital database and it is vast. The presenters do have to ‘go into it’ to look through all the music we have available.
Ohio Paul on 18 December 2023
Just occurred to me, Andy, the USA and England or two countries sharing a common Songbook. God Bless, Merry Christmas.
Mary Cobb on 16 November 2023
I love your station— I’m listening all the way from sunny California USA.Im 60 and I love crooners, Big Band and swing music. Keep playing the music of our lives.
Mary Cobb—Elk Grove, CA
Barbara Heathcote on 14 November 2023
Hi Andy, listening to Bobby Darin ‘Somewhere’. took me back to being a teenager and madly in love with PJ Proby as he sang it as well. I had his EP with Hold Me, even though no record player so had to take round to friends houses. I also loved Wayne Newton, I was a strange child 🤣
Jeff on 14 November 2023
David Yarnall’s whimsical, laid back presentation and wonderfully varied choice of music is a daily treat. You won’t find a better afternoon show on UK radio…
Andy G on 14 November 2023
I agree. Smashing programme!
David Yarnall on 14 November 2023
Jeff, thank you so very, very much for your kind words. You don’t know how much your comment means to me. I really appreciate you taking the time to get in touch and I’m pleased that you enjoy my programme.

Fabulous Kevin Taylor Show last night. What a thrill to have met and spoken to the wonderful Jo Stafford. Many thanks Kevin 👍🙂
Nicky Crouch on 11 November 2023
Having just returned home from playing the oboe in two Armistice Day ceremonies here in France, I am really enjoying the British “remembrance” music with Vera Lynn, Nimrod, I vow to thee my country etc.
Very emotional.
Martyn Bassey on 11 November 2023
Very true. Stuart Linnell gave a lovely tribute I thought . Moonlight Serenade gets me every time.
Anthony Parkin on 11 November 2023
Lately. I have taken to an Armistice ceremony that is very low key. But holds a lot of meaning and history.
I drawn to it and feel a connection to my Mum and Dad. It is performed close to where the UK railways were said to have begun. And George Stephenson and Timothy Hackworth lived.
Afterwards we had coffee and a chat. And I was surprised to be invited to have a whisky and toast Absent Friends.
I am looking forward to hearing all of today’s programmes I have missed overnight and I am listening to this evening’s programmes too.
Martyn Bassey on 11 November 2023
Sounds like a very enjoyable day. Hope you manage to listen to the programmes you missed earlier. I’m listening to Kevin Taylor now and Steve James later on 😊
Martyn Bassey on 11 November 2023
Wonderful entertainment throughout the early hours this Saturday morning. Many thanks to Sean Usher, Johnny Mac, and Ed Wellman.
Johnny Mac on 11 November 2023
Thank you, Martyn. You’re a stalwart of the wee small hours!!
Martyn Bassey on 11 November 2023
To hear Sam Cooke singing A Change Is Gonna Come keeps me going! Thanks for playing that Johnny. Absolute classic. 👍😊
Barbara Heathcote on 10 November 2023
Hi Andy thank you for playing Vic Damone again. I did close my eyes and remember how lucky I was to see him 4 times. Not sure if this would be too long for the 8.30 nonsense slot but the Bob Newhart introducing Tobacco monologue is very funny.
Karen on 10 November 2023
I have that Bob Newhart track on an lp Barbara… My dad used to love it. And i found the lp recently in a charity shop and so have been reminded how funny it is.
Andy Marriott on 17 November 2023
I have played it in the past, and as you say it is rather long.
I’ll dig it out again soon.

Tom Ashmore on 6 November 2023
Vic Groves playing my favourite vocalist Sarah Vaughan plus my favourite country singer Bobby Bare made a very enjoyable Sunday afternoon. Peggy Ann Ellis had Vic playing the rare ones. Great programme.
Vic Groves on 6 November 2023
Thank you Tom. Very kind of you. Just been reading “Queen Of Bebop” biography of Sarah Vayghan. Pleased you like the country track.

Used to love ❤️those far away days when things were soooo carefree 😎
David on 4 November 2023
Thank you for your lovely programme today and for playing the much missed Harry ,Nilsson today. Is it just me or is there a melody similarity between “I ‘m always chasing rainbows” and “just loving you” by Anita Harris….??
David Beaver on 3 November 2023
I have loved the Andy Marriott’s Halloween Party this week. A truly entertaining show that was incredibly well compiled with some really well researched clips of plays and readings mixed with appropriate and varied music. It should be an annual broadcast and I highly recommend it as the perfect Halloween entertainment.
Thanks for broadcasting this.
Kate on 3 November 2023
John Darvall, what a lovely, soothing voice you have!
Peter on 2 November 2023
You do play excellent Music, never hear it anywhere else on the radio. A real Light and Easy station. I listen when on my PC as I have a Hi Fi amp connected to it with proper floor standing hi fi speakers, so it sounds really good.
Cindy Kent on 2 November 2023
Doing very boring housework and listening to the lovely Dick Fisher is really helping! Thanks for the music and the chat
Wendy on 2 November 2023
Wow. Jonathan and Darlene Edwards… Fabulous. But are we sure its Jo Stafford and not my mother? I am sure i grew up hearing that beautiful singing voice 😂

Karen on 31 October 2023
Thoroughly enjoying tonight’s Halloween show with Andy. The combination of stories and music we dont often hear along with old favourites is very entertaining… let’s hope there are no nightmares from the stories😉
Dave on 30 October 2023
I enjoy many of the programmes and presenters that are broadcast on Serenade Radio. In particular, however, a real favourite is that of the Andy Marriott Programme. Whilst I enjoy his whole show I do look forward to the 8.30 slot. Twaddle etc. However I haven’t heard, at least, for some time the wonderful recording of Joyce Grenfell as a school teacher with all that that entailed, I should be very grateful to hear this once again. It really does bring a smile to my face.
Peter Tomlinson on 30 October 2023
I have just been reading the many tributes to my great friend and erstwhile radio colleague Brain Savin. For those of you who didn’t catch my programme yesterday I said that we paid our final respects to Brian on Thursday afternoon in a packed crematorium in Solihull outside Birmingham. Brian was a man of eclectic musical tastes, he especially loved the music from the great American Popular Songbook which this radio station keeps very much alive: a radio station Brian helped to bring into being nearly 10 years ago. We entered the auditorium to the sounds of “Soave sia il vento” from Cosi Fan Tutte and left to the strains of the Beach Boys and “God Only Knows”. I ended my show with Ella and “East of The Sun, and West of The Moon” One of his favourite artists singing one of his favourite songs. He is now at peace. Thank you Brian.
Martyn Bassey on 29 October 2023
Fabulous music on the Dawn Chorus with Ed Wellman this morning. Also the Steve James programmes this weekend were hugely enjoyable. Great to hear a Françoise Hardy song on the radio too. Many thanks to you both 🙂
Anne Wade on 29 October 2023
I was listing to Stuart Saturday show this evening as I always do👏🏻 and in the middle SR started playing light music😳 Hope everything is well with Stuart🙏🏻 love his show 😎
Anthony Parkin on 29 October 2023
Anne,
Its all to do with the clocks going back the hour. The first transmission at midday is three hours but the repeat would need to be four hours long so an hour of music is inserted.
Then when its possible to resume and the times match up the programme starts again.
I kept falling asleep earlier in the day so I have been listening overnight but I often do. 😊
Karen on 29 October 2023
Thank you for that explanation Anthony. I was intrigued to know what would happen and tried to stay awake as i am often awake in the night… But typically on this occasion fell asleep.!
Clifford Chambers on 28 October 2023
Dear Serenade Radio Team, We listen to the station most of the day finding it ideal being free from news, weather reports and painful adverts, however not advert free completely when connecting with the smart speaker, most of the time the first thing we endure is an advert for another radio station and then two adverts to follow. I realise that for the rest of the day there are no more unless it is for some reason disconnected and when it comes back on again the aforementioned are included for the first few minutes. Is this normal please? I usually mute the sound until i know they are finished. I would appreciate your feedback on this matter but other than that, Serenade Radio is the best thing since sliced bread (so long as it’s wholemeal!!!)
Serenade Radio on 28 October 2023
Hi Clifford sorry to hear you are having problems with your Smart speaker. If you vist our ‘Tuning In’ page and look at the FAQ the first question is how do I bypass Tune-in adverts on my smart speaker. That should solve the issue. If you are still having problems please drop us a line via the contact form and we will try to help you further.
Clifford Chambers on 30 October 2023
Hi Team, Thank you for your very swift reply advising to visit your ‘tuning in’ page which I did and HURRAR! SUCCESS! No further adverts. Thank you very much indeed.
Sue on 28 October 2023
Great programme Stuart
Stuart Linnell on 4 November 2023
Thank you Sue. Just catching up with my messages. So kind of you to get in touch.
Brian Reynolds on 27 October 2023
As someone with a lifetime passion for light music, I am enjoying Adrian Jackson’s “Evergreen” every Friday at 9.00pm. Last week he played a track from Sydney Thompson’s Old Time orchestra, which broadcast for many years. Adrian might be interested to know that, whilst Thompson eloquently presented his radio programmes and organised his orchestra, he did not actually conduct his musicians- as he was a championship dancer – but not a musician. That task fell to Louis Voss for many years and subsequently to Leon Young and Ronald Hanmer – all familiar names to radio listeners of the period. For some reason this fact was rarely mentioned, either on air, or in the Radio Times. I once said to a now deceased producer that someone as distinguished as Louis Voss must have been irked by this – but I was told “he was too much of a gentlemen to complain!”
I must say that, having met many conductors of the era, the light music profession was abound with ‘gentlemen’ !
Keep up the good work Adrian!
Adrian Jackson on 28 October 2023
Thank you for your kind comments Brian and for the interesting information about Sydney Thompson, I’ll be sure to include this in a future programme. Thanks for listening to Evergreen.
Barbara Heathcote on 26 October 2023
Hi Andy, great programme tonight as always, thank you for for Vic Damone ❤️. John Gary and Arthur Prysock are new to me. Don’t know where you find them. David Whitfield was a regular on the radio growing up and mum’s favourite singer.
Andy Marriott on 29 October 2023
Hi Barbara, Thanks for your kind words. I’m glad that you are enjoying discovering “new” singers with us on SR.
Plus remembering good times with your Mum. That’s what Serenade Radio is all about. All the best.
Martyn Bassey on 26 October 2023
Hi Andy. You played Cheek To Cheek by The Pasadena Roof Orchestra today. I believe the vocalist is John “Pazz” Parry. Hope this is of help to you.
Andy Marriott on 29 October 2023
Thanks for the info Martyn, I shall try to remember that for next time. What are the chances? 🙂
Bob Chapman on 26 October 2023
Dick Fisher
The song you played came forth and. has lasted but what won has it lasted as long. Love your show always a great programme
Dick Fisher on 27 October 2023
Hi Bob…you’re referring to the San Remo Festival entry I think. All I have to do is remember the year or the song and I should be able to track down the winner!
Edgar on 25 October 2023
Great music but where is the DJ?
Brian Reynolds on 26 October 2023
Edgar -Music While You Work never had a DJ. It was a twice-daily programme of uninterrupted dance or light music which ran for 27 years without a break – and was subsequently revived several times There were two daily editions – usually broadcast ‘live’. What you were listening to wasn’t a CD – it was a half-hour broadcast from the Maida Vale studios given by one of hundreds of musical combinations utilised over the years. Glad you liked it!
Arthur on 25 October 2023
Today’s music while you work wih the Don Lusher big band is wonderful. Definitely up there as one of my favourites.
Sue on 24 October 2023
Fabulous station, found by accident last week, no longer listen to local radio, I now tune into serenade radio every day, certainly my kind of music, well done everyone.

Hello , wondrous sounds as ever. Hello Annette, hope you are well.
Annette Pender on 23 October 2023
I’m fine thankyou Victor living alone in the rural Scottish Borders with my two dogs, art studio and music! Teaching art to vulnerable adults and they just love this music and reminiscing about the old days and good times. Nothing like a bit of nostalgia

Pepe Sobreruedas (Miami, FL, USA) on 12 October 2023
Thank you for rebroadcasting “Steyn’s Song of the Week,” every Thursday…I never miss it and that’s not because I didn’t listen to Sunday’s regular broadcast, although it’s a nice convenience to have on the off chance I do miss it…I just enjoy getting a double dose of such excellent and educational programing even, or especially if, I’ve already heard it before…It helps to keep my bellicosity in check…I hope you keep its archival rebroadcast for as long as you can as I don’t expect Mark to adopt, or adapt, to another producer…Hoping this electron finds its destination, I remain grateful…
Randall Riley on 11 October 2023
Thanks so much for adding Donna Hightower into your playlists. Just hearing her singing “Because of You” this morning and really enjoying it.
David Purll on 9 October 2023
Great show on sunday as always Roger! Always good to hear Sandy Denny, so underrated but so magnificent, and also Dory Previn .. please play more of her broadcast able stuff (!)
Might I also suggest Journey, by Duncan Browne and Pinball, by Brian Protheroe. It’s a bit obvious, but I know, it may not be appropriate for the program .
Thank you
Roger Williams on 14 October 2023
Hello David, both the above songs are in the library (I think). I’ll sort them out but it won’t be this week. Elsewhere it’s been good to read about your athletic feats!
David Purll on 16 October 2023
I think you mean ” aquatic”!! Meanwhile how about these possibles as unusual cover versions.,Deena Webster Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues … obviously Dylan!
John Renbourn My Sweet Potato …from BookerT. & the MGs
Bert Jansch Better Get it in your soul …. from Charlie Mingus.
Grest programme last night. Thank you
Wendy on 9 October 2023
Love the album of the week already… ‘ kiss me once, kiss me twice …, ‘ my dad used to play that and sing it to me when i was a toddler… When i now realise it was a new record. ( And apparently i still know the words!) That’s brightened up the monday morning journey to work.
Bruce on 8 October 2023
Another rendition of thought provoking, emotional swallow your tears, heart searching music, this music of soft focus…
Nick Hingley on 8 October 2023
My usual Sunday Evening with Serenade. Really enjoying Soft Folkus in its new extended slot (still missing David Corbett but pleased there is a new light music show on Fridays to take up the mantle). However, tonight’s show was par excellence with two Fairport tracks, Ralph McTell, Cregson & Collister, Gordon Lightfoot, James Taylor and other gems; but that first track really stopped me in my tracks and got me thinking: “What the heck have we got here? Don’t know this at all… It sounds like a Robert Kirby arrangement…” And then the back announcement. I have not heard of Chris Brain but his work certainly needs further investigation. Stunning.
I said stopped me in my tracks: well it would have done had I not already been sitting down and reading a book about Nick Drake. (I have been battling through the latest biography and the first written with the blessing of his sister Gabrielle Drake. A compelling read but the later chapters make for very hard reading.)
Anyway, a great show from Roger – and I enjoy Dance Band Days too. Stuff we don’t get anywhere else these days…
Martyn Bassey on 7 October 2023
Two great shows from Sean Usher and Johnny McAtasney this morning. I loved the three songs by Marilyn Monroe. Bobby Darin, Peggy, Frank, Nat, Labi Siffre, Don McLean, Joni Mitchell, Marianne Faithfull, the list goes on. Great stuff. Many thanks to you both.
Anthony Parkin on 7 October 2023
Hidden gems. When do we find the time to sleep? Well it does mean entertainment when we are unable to. Or for those who keep different hours or are in other time zones.
Martyn Bassey on 7 October 2023
Very true. Such good music on Serenade. I’m a bit of an insomniac so that helps ! 😄
Johnny McAtasney on 7 October 2023
Thank you to you both. The Serenade Radio library is huge and it’s a true joy to rummage through the thousands of wonderful tunes of ‘our kind of music’ for our dear listeners across the world.
Anthony Parkin on 7 October 2023
“The Great American Songbook” with The Great Stuart Linnell”😉I’m not going anywhere.
The weather isn’t great. Bus services are poor. I have what I need though thankfully my needs are simple and few.
How fortunate that I can have beautiful music and good company. This will I think be even more appreciated by many of us as we enter the colder darker days of Autumn and Winter. And then wait for Spring.
I have been known to listen twice😊
Stuart Linnell on 9 October 2023
Thank you for your kind words Anthony, and thank you for listening. It’s so good to know that you enjoy the show, and that you enjoy listening to Serenade Radio.
David Small on 7 October 2023
I am really enjoying the new series of Evergreen introduced by ADRIAN JACKSON lovely selection of recordings however I have to comment this week on the poor sound quality of Adrian’s voice overs this week very echoing and somtimes muffled sounded like he was talking through a funnel but a lovely series so far
Andy Marriott on 7 October 2023
Hi David, I noticed that too. Something clearly went wrong in Adrian’s studio. I’ve made him aware of it.
Thanks.
Adrian Jackson on 8 October 2023
Apologies David, it would seem I had a few gremlins in the studio, all sorted now and I look forward to Evergreen on Friday. I’m delighted you’re enjoying my selection of music.
Andy Logan on 7 October 2023
Another Saturday morning and another much-needed helping of wry humour courtesy of the inimitable Jeff Owen.
That’s the way to start the weekend!

From across the pond🤩😎
Edgar on 7 October 2023
There’s a Max Bygraves song I enjoyed a few minutes ago but for the second time I’m unable to find any information about it. I know I heard this song back in the day.
Simon McLean on 7 October 2023
Looks like it might be ‘What’s New’, which appears to be a vocal version of a Herb Alpert tune – is that the one?
Edgar on 7 October 2023
Herb Alpert. I believe that’s right. YouTube says, “So What’s New”.
Mark Steyn on 7 October 2023
That’s right: “So What’s New?” John Pisano, who was playing guitar with Herb at the time, wrote it as an instrumental. Peggy Lee heard it, liked it, and put a cute lyric to it. Max’s version is pretty good, but I have no idea why they mistitled it on the album.
Paul on 24 November 2023
Mark I am praying for your health and favorable resolution in your legal issues. I so enjoyed the incredible Song of the Week featuring Strangers in the Night. I marvelled at the hours of research, writing and editing involved. The incredibly woven narration and variety of selections amazed…and amused. Of all versions have you heard Billy May’s 1966 Billy May Today album? My wife nearly leaves the house when I play his Strangers in the Night at high volume. God Bless…..Paul from Ohio

Adding to the confusion there’s the Burke/Haggert standard that was the title song on Linda Ronstadt’s What’s New album with Nelson Riddle. Her manager and label didn’t want to do it but she insisted and it led to three well received albums.

Hi Andy, enjoyed tonight’s programme, some of my favourite crooners, especially Vic Damone of course, and love the 8.30 humorous section. Brings back memories of when all we had was the light programme, I was an Ovaltini if anyone can remember the programme. We didn’t get a TV until I was 12 and then I wanted to marry Dr Kildare.

Ah, The Ovaltineys. Such good fun. Much gentler days. Nice to hear from you Barbara.
You had to go and mention Dr Kildare, didn’t you? Now I can’t get the tune out of my head… bom, bom, bom!

Good music as always tonight. 8 o’clock pm seems to be about the correct time for a glass of something, purely medicinal of course, to accompany great music. Keep it going

Thank you for the new album of the week feature which i have thoroughly enjoyed this week. I didnt really know an awful lot about Perry Como’s music apart from what ive heard on SR. But it’s been lovely… especially the tune David Yarnall played today Sunrise Sunset. I may even have to look for the album to buy it. Looking forward to the album choices in the future . Thank you

I agree Karen. This allows us an opportunity to dig a bit deeper into the work of some fabulous performers and enjoy music which is quite clearly not as familiar as the stuff which made the charts. There are some great albums, relatively unknown, still to come.
