So very sad to hear the death of Chris Helme who had his brass band programme on Serenade Radio on a Friday Night never missed his lovely programmes of Brass Band Music . My thoughts are with his family at this ver sad time R.I.P Chriss

  2. Chris on 28 April 2025

Hi Jeff, thanks, first time I’ve had a mention on Serenade!
    Brilliant programme.

  3. Al on 28 April 2025

    Hi again,

Excellent soft folkus show last night, nice to hear the pennine way again, which I think I heard a few weeks back, and also Steve Earle, love copperhead road, so galway girl was one I had not heard before!!

    Have a great week,
    Al

  4. Nick Hingley on 28 April 2025

Yet more sad news. I have thoroughly enjoyed Chris’s ‘Bandstand’ programme which filled a massive gap since Frank Renton’s ‘Listen to the Band’ disappeared from Radio 2. I was going to post something along the lines of ‘Where Serenade leads, the BBC follows’ as Radio 3 have just announced a brass band programme to be broadcast on Sunday evenings. I will have to listen to that via BBC Sounds as Sundays are strictly Serenade Radio at Hingley Towers.

Chris had such enthusiasm for his genre of music and demonstrated great knowledge of his subject. Another Serenade presenter who will be sorely missed. Sincere condolences to Chris’s family and friends.

    RIP Chris Helme

  5. Lindsay Seagrim-Trinder on 27 April 2025

Just “listening again” to the programme about Ivor Novello; my grandmother (1892-1951) was one of the “adoring women” who loved Ivor Novello’s music, and she named my father (1922-2005) after him! xx

  6. Catherine on 26 April 2025

Dear Mark, Great programme as always, but I had to write about Davy Crockett! Graham and I started singing along – he admitted he only remembered the chorus – and from somewhere in the grey depths I suddenly dug out the name of Fess Parker. We both remembered watching the tv series and all the kids going to school singing the song and being desperate for a Davy Crockett hat. Another age! Thanks for a happy memory.

  7. Nancy on 26 April 2025

I’m so sad to learn that Chris Helme has died. A loss indeed to Serenade Radio and its listeners.
Rest in peace sir, you will be missed.❤

  8. Jackie Newark on 26 April 2025

So sorry to hear of the loss of another Serenade presenter. Thank you Chris Helme for the great music you always played for us. RIP

  9. Linda Marskell on 26 April 2025

Sorry to hear about Chris Helme. Condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. His passing is a real blow to Serenade Radio . Chris had such a passion and wealth of knowledge, so much so, that his show was a ‘must not miss’ programme in my house.

  10. Maggie mulherine on 26 April 2025

So sorry to hear of the passing of another wonderful presenter, R.I.P. Chris Helme. Thanks for the music

  11. Martyn Bassey on 26 April 2025

Another fab show Johnny. Not forgetting Sean Usher earlier on. Many thanks to you both 👍👍

    • Johnny Mac on 3 May 2025

Good man, Martyn. Always glad to hear from you.

  12. Nancy on 26 April 2025

Great program this evening Johnny. Very atmospheric variety of music. Thank you for your presenter talents!

    • Johnny Mac on 31 May 2025

Awww, thank you, Nancy. And it was great to finally get round to playing your nominated artist of the week, Norah Jones!

  13. Chris on 25 April 2025

Jeff, brilliant week of music and chat! I can’t listen to all of your Saturday morning show so this week has been really good for me. Thanks!

  14. John Walsh on 25 April 2025

Hi Jeff, Lovely to hear you play The Windows of the World with Bobby Gentry. A kind of lost Burt and Hal composition but a very powerful tune all the same with a anti war theme running through it. I love this version with a simple guitar backing. Great tunes Jeff on your magnificent show every day as I paint and create in my studio here in Ireland. I am glad I found Serenade radio, it’s brilliant.

  15. Karen on 24 April 2025

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to Sammes Songs . Both the music and hearing Mike Sammes introducing the tracks himself. Another little gem on SR

  16. Nancy on 24 April 2025

    Mrs. Miller. I’d almost forgotten,,,yikes 😮

  17. Randall Riley on 24 April 2025

Just heard you guys play “I’m Beginning to See the Light” by Rosemary Clooney. Just in case other listeners would like to know and (and maybe add to your info), the incredible band behind her on that recording is none other than Woody Herman and His Orchestra, recorded near the end of his long career. Woody soloed on that track as well. Great stuff!

  18. Randall Riley on 24 April 2025

Digging “No Name Jive” by Glen Gray and the Casa Loma Orchestra. If that doesn’t get you up out of your chair and jitterbugging, nothing will! Thanks for the great tunes!

  19. Barbara Heathcote on 23 April 2025

Hi Andy I agree with you Vic Damone didn’t always get the recognition he deserved, maybe I’m a bit biased but to me he was up there with Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennet but always seemed to be left on the fringe of the top crooners. His version of All the Things You are is beautiful.

    • Elaine Biggerstaff on 28 April 2025

Barbara, I agree. I honestly never thought Frank Sinatra was that great a singer.

  20. Catherine B on 23 April 2025

Good morning Jeff, Thanks for lovely choice of music this week, had to write to tell you I had a LOL moment this am with La Vie en Rose.

    • Paul on 23 April 2025

      You weren’t alone there Catherine!

    • Karen on 23 April 2025

Me too Catherine and I nearly choked on my tea with the ‘ playing away’ and Brian Cant comments!

  21. Steve in Worcs on 23 April 2025

Fantastic choice for the “twaddle spot” today, Andy – so appropriate 🤣

St. George and the Dragnet – “….he boined me already!”

  22. Dave Cole on 23 April 2025

    Hi Andy,
Thanks for playing ‘Snow bird’ by Anne Murray. Just to mention that the version by its author, Gene MacLellan, is worth a listen to. Its very poignant as his life ended so tragically!

  23. Dave Cole on 22 April 2025

Please Help Me I’m Falling – Hank Locklin. Such a great track! Thanks.

    • Jeff Owen on 23 April 2025

Glad you enjoyed it Dave & thanks for listening.

  24. Dave Cole on 22 April 2025

Thanks to Andy Marriott for playing Harry Secombe’s ‘The Old Rugged Cross’. Such a great hymn!

  25. Vanessa-Ann Dowsett on 22 April 2025

Thank you Serenade and Roger for a wonderful programme, it was a golden hour. The very worrying thing was that I knew all the words to all of the songs, much to my neighbours chagrin! Thank you, looking forward to another, or even a repeat

    • Roger Williams on 22 April 2025

      Hello Vanessa

It is extraordinary that we can remember the words to all these songs but can’t remember what we did yesterday. Congratulations on entertaining the neighbours – I bet they loved it. It was great fun putting the show together, thank you for listening.

      Uncle Roger

  26. Tony Gilliam on 21 April 2025

Just listened to the story of Reprise Records very entertaining and this programme should be put forward for some broadcasting award if it has not been already considered for one.

  27. Martyn Bassey on 21 April 2025

Very interesting and entertaining show about the history of Reprise Records. Many thanks to Kevin Taylor.

  28. Barbara Heathcote on 21 April 2025

Hi Roger, I’m so annoyed with myself as I had sky tv engineer just before 12 to install new box and I missed childrens favourites 😟. Any chance of a repeat please.

    • Roger Williams on 22 April 2025

      Hello Barbara,

Sadly there are no official plans for a repeat.

      Roger

  29. David Small on 21 April 2025

Many thanks Uncle Roger for some lovely childhood memories when we used to listen to Uncle Mac on a Saturday morning loved all the music . Thank you

    • Roger Williams on 21 April 2025

      David

Thank you for your kind comments, I’m very much a child of the Uncle Mac era and it’s a joy putting the show together. Thank you for listening.

      Uncle Roger

  30. Clifford Chambers on 21 April 2025

What a fantastic look back with comical songs we don’t hear anymore. I still howl with laughter at the Ying Tong Song along with the others you played. Thank you.

    • Roger Williams on 21 April 2025

      Hello Clifford

Thank you for your kind comments. It’s a joy playing the songs that I grew up with and they do take us back to a time when the world seemed like a simpler place. The Ying Tong Song makes me chuckle too, even after all these years. Thank you for listening.

      Uncle Roger

  31. Deb Brownlee on 20 April 2025

What a joy to hear Mark Steyn on air again. Thank you to whoever dropped on X about his section. Great station as well , now I’ve found it.

  32. Karen on 20 April 2025

    Re Dance band days
Roger/Paul do you have a copy of ‘ I wouldn’t leave my little wooden hut for you ‘ In the library. If so it would be great to hear it. I used to sing it when I was about 6 at dancing school and I don’t think I’ve heard since !

    • Paul Ruddock on 20 April 2025

      Hello Karen

I’ve had a rummage through the SR gram library and nothing is appearing; however I’m pretty sure I have Jack Hylton’s version, as part of a medley of old-tyme songs, on a 78 somewhere on the shelves here at home, I’ll see if I can dig it out, clean it up and include it on Dance Band Days for you in the very near future.

      Best wishes

      Paul

      • Karen on 20 April 2025

Thank you Paul . I was just reading a book by Vera Lynn and she says it was her dad’s favourite song, which is what popped it back into my mind.! ( and apparently I still know the words 😅)

        • Paul Ruddock on 24 April 2025

My pleasure Karen, if you listen in to the Saturday 3rd/Monday 5th May editions of Dance Band Days we’ll be featuring ‘the little wooden hut’ as part of that 1929 Jack Hylton medley I mentioned. It’s a bit crackly, but well worth an airing!

          • Karen on 24 April 2025

Thank you Paul. I’ll be listening.

  33. Randall Riley on 20 April 2025

Hello. Just now heard you play Kitty Kallen singing “It’s Been a Long Long Time,” which you said was backed with the Harry James Orchestra. The version you are playing is from Kitty’s 1963 RCA Album “Kitty Kallen’s ‘My Coloring Book’ And Her Other Great Hits,” with an orchestra backing by Ray Ellis. She softly sings the intro on this version. The version she recorded with Harry James in 1945 has a very brassy bright intro by Harry and the Orchestra and she only comes in toward the middle of the record. Just a minor correction. Enjoy listening to the station!

    • Vic Groves on 20 April 2025

      Hello Randall,
Thanks for getting in touch ad thanks for the information! You are, of course, correct. Slapped wrist for me! Thanks for listening and keeping me on track.
      Regards,
      Vic

  34. Tom Colmey on 20 April 2025

  39. Ian Hall on 19 April 2025

Another great selection of music and humour from Jeff Owen! (PS And thankfully Ofcom saw sense over the proposed BBC R2 oldies station.)

    • Adrian Jackson on 19 April 2025

Hello Barbara, thanks for listening, yes indeed, Jerry Orbach was a fabulous Broadway personality with a great voice, I’ll feature him more often in future programmes.

To all at Serenade Radio, I was so sad to hear of the passing of Dick Fisher my heart felt thoughts go out to his family.

    RIP Dick😔

  45. David Small on 18 April 2025

Well done this week Johnny Mac loved all the music you have played this week at 10.00 2 hours of music that you cannot hear anywhere else and on the best radio station Serenade Radio

  46. Edgar on 17 April 2025

John Fox’s music is the way I’ve always heard it should be.

  47. Martyn Bassey on 17 April 2025

Fabulous show this morning with Johnny Mac. Thanks also for the shout out. Made my day. Top man 👍

  48. Chris Cobb on 17 April 2025

I’ve never been up early enough to catch Ed Wellman or Johnny Mac’s shows but having heard them both in the 10 to 12 slot over the last two weeks I realise what I’ve been missing. Two excellent presenters with an excellent mix of music.

    • Johnny Mac on 17 April 2025

Thank you, Chris. That’s very much appreciated. If you’ve ever got a touch of insomnia, I’m here 3am-6am Saturdays with A Little Night Music.

  49. Barbara Heathcote on 16 April 2025

Hi Andy, after Vic Damone I could listen to Andy Williams all night. The Hawaiian Wedding Song is one of his best.

  50. Sandra on 16 April 2025

Thank you so much for playing, Music while you work, The Banjoliers today.

Do love to hear the banjos and ukulele’s, the volume goes up of course,my happy music. So pleased to have Serenade Radio to listen to, what would we do without you all.

    • Brian Reynolds on 17 April 2025

Sandra – I share your enthusiasm for the Banjoliers. In fact I had the pleasure of attending their final broadcast in 1982 ! They were formed in 1932! Originally they were known as Troise and his Banjoliers, but when Pasquale Troise died in 1957 they were taken over by Jack Mandel. They did more Music While You Work shows than any other combination. You can find out more about them on YouTube, under Troise.

  51. Ronnie Lee on 16 April 2025

Ed Wellman. A beautiful way to wake up in the morning.

  52. Ronnie Lee on 16 April 2025

Very sad to hear of the death of Dick Fisher a wonderful man

  53. Wim Willems on 16 April 2025

A message attn Simon McLean. Dear Simon, I always listen to your programme Music Box at 13.00 hrs (12 noon UK time) and I love the instrumental music you’re playing. I was listening yesterday (15 April) when you mentioned you would be celebrating your birthday today the 16 April. I hereby wish you many happy returns of the day and keep on playing this great music and I pledge to listen to your programme. Greetings from Wim Willems, Almere, the Netherlands

    • Simon McLean on 16 April 2025

Thank you, Wim – I hope you continue to enjoy the show!

  54. Philip Pearce on 16 April 2025

It was a delight to wake up this morning and listen to Sid Phillips and his band. Rarely heard these days.

  55. Johnny Mac on 16 April 2025

Happy birthday and many happy returns to Simon McLean. Music Box is a diamond of a show!

    • Simon McLean on 16 April 2025

      Thank you, Johnny!

  56. Nicky on 16 April 2025

I am so sorry to hear that Dick Fisher has died and send my sincerest condolences to his family.
His programme was always a joy and his penchant to tell us things that we did not know that we did not know made it seem personal. He will be sadly missed and good luck to his successor.

  57. Nancy on 15 April 2025

Great Norah Jones story: My husband’s a piano technician and a few years ago we received a call from a venue that was hosting Norah Jones. Husband didn’t know who she was and handed the phone to me to complete the appointment as he had a client waiting. Afterwards I asked him if he knew who she was; he didn’t. So I told him she was Ravi Shankar’s daughter and he really perked up! A few days later I heard him telling some younger friends that he was going to be working for Ravi Shankar’s daughter. They had no idea who Ravi Shankar was…
I still laugh thinking about that!

  58. Karen on 15 April 2025

Great show today Johnny. I was indeed dancing around the house. Apparently
it’s more acceptable at 10.30 than it is at 3.30am. 😉

  59. Nancy on 14 April 2025

Great to hear Johnny Mac mid afternoon (Montana time), filling the wonderful Dick Fisher’s spot. Shout out to Johnny’s GEMs who may be listening!

    • Martyn Bassey on 14 April 2025

I’m enjoying listening to Johnny Mac on the evening repeat. Big shout out to you Nancy 👍

    • Karen on 15 April 2025

Hi Nancy . Another GEM reporting in . 🙂

    • Johnny Mac on 19 April 2025

Thank you, dear GEMS, one and all. Hope you heard the Quiet Mentions (QMs) that I gave you. I can’t do a Shout Out! Bad for the vocal chords of honey here!

  60. Catherine B on 14 April 2025

Thank you Johnny Mac for a lovely programme this morning. A real treat to hear you mid-morning and such beautiful tracks, especially ending with Linda Ronstadt for Dick. Condolences to his family and all at SR.

  62. Nick Hingley on 13 April 2025

    Happy Birthday Johnny Beerling!
I never miss the show – I found a few Ted Heath LPs at a flea market a year or two back icluding one at the BBC. Also fond memories of Sheila Tracy.

  63. Roger Cairns-Berteau on 13 April 2025

I was shocked and so saddened to learn of Dick’s passing. His sunny outlook and professionalism was such a fitting compliment to the classy music he played. With deep condolences to his family and all colleagues at Serenade.

  64. Andrew Hunter on 12 April 2025

Hi Adrian. Yes, I am listening in again 🙂 Loved the “Flash, Bang, Wallop” song which was new to me. Enjoyed your referring to Tommy Steele and made me think of “The Fortuosity” song from the Happiest Millionaire featuring Tommy. Please can you play it sometime?
    Regards
Andrew (in Cape Town, way down South) 🙂

  65. Art Rossi on 12 April 2025

I use to listen to Serenade Radio without all of the US ads. Even you britts have become caught up in this ad world. It is disappointing.

    • Andy Marriott, Station Manager on 12 April 2025

      Hi Art,
We do not carry ads of any kind, ever.
If you are hearing commercials they are being inserted by whatever relay site you are listening to.
Listen directly from our website or apps and you will not hear ads.
I’d be interested to learn how you are listening…

  66. Andrew Hunter on 12 April 2025

Hi Cindy. I am loving your selection this afternoon. Easy, melodic, sing-a-long numbers!
    Have a great weekend

  70. Martyn Bassey on 12 April 2025

Got 1976 as soon as I heard Miss You Nights by Cliff Richard. Lovely song by Mary Hopkin. Great music Johnny 👍😊

    • Johnny Mac on 12 April 2025

Good man, Martyn. You’re a diamond geezer!

  71. Nick Hingley on 11 April 2025

Loving Serenade in Queensland Australia … thank you for the wonderful station

  73. Malcolm Scott on 11 April 2025

  74. Frank on 11 April 2025

Andy, Bing singing the Isle of Innisfree – you’ve made my day. Frank

  75. Robert Thomson on 11 April 2025

I am wondering if you have access to any Australian recordings. We had an ABC Big Band and lots of good singers (some imported from the UK!).

    • Simon McLean on 12 April 2025

Hello! I play some Australian artists on my Music Box show – you can sometimes hear Brian May and the ABC Melbourne Show Band (I ought to play them more often, as they were a great band), as well as Eric Jupp and his Music, and the Melbourne Pops Orchestra. Some excellent music came from Australia, and I’m always open to more suggestions!

  76. Barbara Heathcote on 10 April 2025

Hi Andy not sure how many remember Elton Hayes but he sang a lot of amusing folk songs such as The Duck and the kangaroo and the Quangles Wangles Hat. A suggestion for the twaddle slot perhaps.

    • Roger Williams on 10 April 2025

Hello Barbara, excuse me butting in but your mention of Elton Hayes prompted me to include him in Children’s Favourites on Easter Monday at midday. You can probably guess which song it will be, but your message will encourage me to explore his work more widely – an artist that deserves to be remembered more than he is – thank you!
      Roger W

      • Barbara Heathcote on 10 April 2025

Hi Roger I can guess the song from Robin Hood Riddle de Diddle de Day?

  77. Daren Overington on 10 April 2025

We are both so saddened to hear of the passing Dick Fisher I always tuned in every morning at 10am for his 2 hours of great music he will be sadly missed.
Condolences to his family and all his colleagues at Serenade.

  78. Nigel Baines on 9 April 2025

How pleased I am to have found Serenade radio, after trawling the airways trying to find exactly something like this.
It is like an aural warm bath ! How nice not to have to be battered with people trying to convince me to get my energy supplied by a squid, or to go on a cruise with Gerty Huiton
The only thing missing for me is the large stereogram that this music used to emit from either on vinyl or the light program .

  79. Nancy on 8 April 2025

I’m loving the Joyce Grenfell twaddle, there’s no one like her!

  80. Dave and Sue on 8 April 2025

Only recently discovered your erstwhile music station. We stay semi permanently here in France in retirement.
We migrated from South Africa after 50 years, do miss it but quite happy here in the lovely Francaise!
Carry on the good work with the superb music choices.

  81. Anne W on 7 April 2025

So sad to hear the passing of Dick Fisher🥲 May he rest with the Angels😇He will be missed🙏🏻❤️

  82. Steve James on 7 April 2025

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Dick Fisher this morning when I tuned into Andy’s show.

I thought the update to listeners was incredibly well handled and the show presented by Ed Wellman, in Dick’s usual slot, was presented with great care, compassion and respect, it demonstrated the very best way of how to handle such sensitive moments.
