Soft Folkus is essential listening for a Sunday night in our house. Perfect, relaxing music with a “folkie” slant. Highly recommended 👍

  2. Arthur on 14 October 2023

Another beautifully relaxing selection of music on Ed Wellman’s show this morning. Thank you Ed .

    • Ed Wellman on 14 October 2023

Hello Arthur, and thank you for your kind message – the music is a joy just to listen to, and not to do chores to! Thank you for being a Serenade dawn chorister. Kettle always on from 6am – see you there! Ed

  3. Martyn Bassey on 14 October 2023

I’m enjoying Ed Wellman’s Dawn Chorus at the moment. Many thanks also to Sean Usher and Johnny McAtasney for their brilliant shows earlier. Looking forward to the three songs by Jonie James next Saturday Johnny 😊. Many thanks once again for such fab music.

    • Johnny McAtasney on 14 October 2023

Thank you, Martyn. My pleasure. It was very interesting to read about Joni James and her relatively short showbiz life. See you next Saturday at 3am for the best time of the day on A Little Night Music!

      • Ed Wellman on 14 October 2023

Thank you Martyn, and well done for staying awake for the Dawn Chorus after Sean and Johnny’s lovely company and music through the night! Extra dose of caffeine for you I think…Ed

  4. Pepe Sobreruedas (Miami, FL, USA) on 12 October 2023

Thank you for rebroadcasting “Steyn’s Song of the Week,” every Thursday…I never miss it and that’s not because I didn’t listen to Sunday’s regular broadcast, although it’s a nice convenience to have on the off chance I do miss it…I just enjoy getting a double dose of such excellent and educational programing even, or especially if, I’ve already heard it before…It helps to keep my bellicosity in check…I hope you keep its archival rebroadcast for as long as you can as I don’t expect Mark to adopt, or adapt, to another producer…Hoping this electron finds its destination, I remain grateful…

  5. Randall Riley on 11 October 2023

Thanks so much for adding Donna Hightower into your playlists. Just hearing her singing “Because of You” this morning and really enjoying it.

  6. David Purll on 9 October 2023

Great show on sunday as always Roger! Always good to hear Sandy Denny, so underrated but so magnificent, and also Dory Previn .. please play more of her broadcast able stuff (!)
Might I also suggest Journey, by Duncan Browne and Pinball, by Brian Protheroe. It’s a bit obvious, but I know, it may not be appropriate for the program .
    Thank you

    • Roger Williams on 14 October 2023

Hello David, both the above songs are in the library (I think). I’ll sort them out but it won’t be this week. Elsewhere it’s been good to read about your athletic feats!

      • David Purll on 16 October 2023

I think you mean ” aquatic”!! Meanwhile how about these possibles as unusual cover versions.,Deena Webster Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues … obviously Dylan!
John Renbourn My Sweet Potato …from BookerT. & the MGs
Bert Jansch Better Get it in your soul …. from Charlie Mingus.
Grest programme last night. Thank you

  7. Wendy on 9 October 2023

Love the album of the week already… ‘ kiss me once, kiss me twice …, ‘ my dad used to play that and sing it to me when i was a toddler… When i now realise it was a new record. ( And apparently i still know the words!) That’s brightened up the monday morning journey to work.

  8. Bruce on 8 October 2023

Another rendition of thought provoking, emotional swallow your tears, heart searching music, this music of soft focus…

  9. Nick Hingley on 8 October 2023

My usual Sunday Evening with Serenade. Really enjoying Soft Folkus in its new extended slot (still missing David Corbett but pleased there is a new light music show on Fridays to take up the mantle). However, tonight’s show was par excellence with two Fairport tracks, Ralph McTell, Cregson & Collister, Gordon Lightfoot, James Taylor and other gems; but that first track really stopped me in my tracks and got me thinking: “What the heck have we got here? Don’t know this at all… It sounds like a Robert Kirby arrangement…” And then the back announcement. I have not heard of Chris Brain but his work certainly needs further investigation. Stunning.
I said stopped me in my tracks: well it would have done had I not already been sitting down and reading a book about Nick Drake. (I have been battling through the latest biography and the first written with the blessing of his sister Gabrielle Drake. A compelling read but the later chapters make for very hard reading.)
Anyway, a great show from Roger – and I enjoy Dance Band Days too. Stuff we don’t get anywhere else these days…

  10. Martyn Bassey on 7 October 2023

Two great shows from Sean Usher and Johnny McAtasney this morning. I loved the three songs by Marilyn Monroe. Bobby Darin, Peggy, Frank, Nat, Labi Siffre, Don McLean, Joni Mitchell, Marianne Faithfull, the list goes on. Great stuff. Many thanks to you both.

    • Anthony Parkin on 7 October 2023

Hidden gems. When do we find the time to sleep? Well it does mean entertainment when we are unable to. Or for those who keep different hours or are in other time zones.

      • Martyn Bassey on 7 October 2023

Very true. Such good music on Serenade. I’m a bit of an insomniac so that helps ! 😄

        • Johnny McAtasney on 7 October 2023

Thank you to you both. The Serenade Radio library is huge and it’s a true joy to rummage through the thousands of wonderful tunes of ‘our kind of music’ for our dear listeners across the world.

  11. Anthony Parkin on 7 October 2023

“The Great American Songbook” with The Great Stuart Linnell”😉I’m not going anywhere.

The weather isn’t great. Bus services are poor. I have what I need though thankfully my needs are simple and few.

How fortunate that I can have beautiful music and good company. This will I think be even more appreciated by many of us as we enter the colder darker days of Autumn and Winter. And then wait for Spring.
I have been known to listen twice😊

    • Stuart Linnell on 9 October 2023

Thank you for your kind words Anthony, and thank you for listening. It’s so good to know that you enjoy the show, and that you enjoy listening to Serenade Radio.

  12. David Small on 7 October 2023

I am really enjoying the new series of Evergreen introduced by ADRIAN JACKSON lovely selection of recordings however I have to comment this week on the poor sound quality of Adrian’s voice overs this week very echoing and somtimes muffled sounded like he was talking through a funnel but a lovely series so far

    • Andy Marriott on 7 October 2023

Hi David, I noticed that too. Something clearly went wrong in Adrian’s studio. I’ve made him aware of it.
      Thanks.

    • Adrian Jackson on 8 October 2023

Apologies David, it would seem I had a few gremlins in the studio, all sorted now and I look forward to Evergreen on Friday. I’m delighted you’re enjoying my selection of music.

  13. Andy Logan on 7 October 2023

Another Saturday morning and another much-needed helping of wry humour courtesy of the inimitable Jeff Owen.

That’s the way to start the weekend!

  14. Anne Wade NC on 7 October 2023

Never fear Sean my husband and I listen to you every Friday evening and love your choices of music📀
    From across the pond🤩😎

  15. Edgar on 7 October 2023

There’s a Max Bygraves song I enjoyed a few minutes ago but for the second time I’m unable to find any information about it. I know I heard this song back in the day.

    • Simon McLean on 7 October 2023

Looks like it might be ‘What’s New’, which appears to be a vocal version of a Herb Alpert tune – is that the one?

      • Edgar on 7 October 2023

Herb Alpert. I believe that’s right. YouTube says, “So What’s New”.

        • Mark Steyn on 7 October 2023

That’s right: “So What’s New?” John Pisano, who was playing guitar with Herb at the time, wrote it as an instrumental. Peggy Lee heard it, liked it, and put a cute lyric to it. Max’s version is pretty good, but I have no idea why they mistitled it on the album.

          • Paul on 24 November 2023

Mark I am praying for your health and favorable resolution in your legal issues. I so enjoyed the incredible Song of the Week featuring Strangers in the Night. I marvelled at the hours of research, writing and editing involved. The incredibly woven narration and variety of selections amazed…and amused. Of all versions have you heard Billy May’s 1966 Billy May Today album? My wife nearly leaves the house when I play his Strangers in the Night at high volume. God Bless…..Paul from Ohio

          • Paul "Ohio" on 29 November 2023

Adding to the confusion there’s the Burke/Haggert standard that was the title song on Linda Ronstadt’s What’s New album with Nelson Riddle. Her manager and label didn’t want to do it but she insisted and it led to three well received albums.

  16. DAVID MESHER on 6 October 2023

Love listening to the new light music programme Evergreen especially in a monestery garden . this is a great replacement for the light programme sadly missed

  17. Anne Wade NC on 6 October 2023

Thank you Adrian for playing those wonderful Sousa marches so uplifting and beautiful 👏🏻😎
Love listening to your show👏🏻 Great job😊

  18. Barbara Heathcote on 6 October 2023

Hi Andy, enjoyed tonight’s programme, some of my favourite crooners, especially Vic Damone of course, and love the 8.30 humorous section. Brings back memories of when all we had was the light programme, I was an Ovaltini if anyone can remember the programme. We didn’t get a TV until I was 12 and then I wanted to marry Dr Kildare.

    • Andy Marriott on 7 October 2023

Ah, The Ovaltineys. Such good fun. Much gentler days. Nice to hear from you Barbara.
You had to go and mention Dr Kildare, didn’t you? Now I can’t get the tune out of my head… bom, bom, bom!

  19. James Chapman on 5 October 2023

Good music as always tonight. 8 o’clock pm seems to be about the correct time for a glass of something, purely medicinal of course, to accompany great music. Keep it going

  20. Karen on 5 October 2023

Thank you for the new album of the week feature which i have thoroughly enjoyed this week. I didnt really know an awful lot about Perry Como’s music apart from what ive heard on SR. But it’s been lovely… especially the tune David Yarnall played today Sunrise Sunset. I may even have to look for the album to buy it. Looking forward to the album choices in the future . Thank you

    • Dick Fisher on 6 October 2023

I agree Karen. This allows us an opportunity to dig a bit deeper into the work of some fabulous performers and enjoy music which is quite clearly not as familiar as the stuff which made the charts. There are some great albums, relatively unknown, still to come.

  21. Mick Wenlock on 5 October 2023

it may be lunch hour in the UK, but here on the Colorado High Plains its wake up time!!! 05:20 or so! “Wakey, wakey!”

  22. Andrew on 4 October 2023

One of my favourite programmes on Serenade Radio is Dinner at Eight on a Saturday evening. I would like to ask about the theme music used for the intro and outro. Is it something from the depths of the copyright-free library, or a commercial recording? Either way, please could someone tell me what it is called. The weekend line-up on Serenade is just superb; I could be back at my parents’ house in Ilkeston in the 1970s and 80s. Many thanks.

    • Simon McLean on 4 October 2023

Thank you for your kind words – Dinner At Eight is something of a labour of love for me, so I’m thrilled when anyone says they like it! The signature tune is ‘Music For Night People’ by the Larry Page Orchestra, which I first discovered on an LP when I was a teenager, and always stuck with me. Thanks again!

      • Steve in Worcs. on 6 October 2023

It’s a great show, Simon, and follows on nicely from Roger’s Dance Band Days.

Thank you for it, from me.

        • Simon McLean on 6 October 2023

Thank you, Steve – absolutely delighted to hear I have another listener!

          • Nick Hingley on 6 October 2023

I have made a regular date with Dinner at Eight for a long time now. I often time my dinner for 8pm on a Saturday – a bit of preparation going on during Roger Williams’s show which I also enjoy very much.
I have been wondering about the theme tune so thanks for resolving that mystery.
I recall that many moons ago there was a Dinner at Eight programme from Radio 390 from Red Sands Fort which had a similar music format to Serenade Radio (though I have to confess I was a Radio Caroline South fan in those days!).

            • Simon McLean on 7 October 2023

Yes, my Dinner At Eight is inspired by the 390 original (thanks to Mr Marriott for the idea!) I was delighted to hear a recording of the 390 version which played a track from a David Snell album which I play a fair bit on my own shows.

  23. Judy Albutt on 4 October 2023

Enjoyed your tribute to the late Syd Lawrence, he truly was a gentleman of perfection and as a result made his own success in the World of Big Bands. I feel very privileged to have known him, following his Orchestra for many years at home and abroad too. A tearful moment in the broadcast hearing the voice of the late Eleanor Keenan, a beautiful lady and vocalist too. Love your programme Johnny Beerling!

  24. Arthur on 4 October 2023

Thankyou for this morning’s very funny twaddle with the marvelous Joyce Grenfell and Norman Wisdom. Hearing Norman Wisdom laugh ( like when he tells a joke but cannot stop laughing) has always made me laugh so much. Great stuff. Cheered me up no end.

  25. Mick on 3 October 2023

You may now know Mr Yarnell but YOU are my wife’s morning workout programme!! It is 06:00 to 08:00 out here on the High Plains of Colorado and she (and I ) are fans of the station.
I, like many of our generation, grew up with the Light Programme!! Thanks to your whole TEAM for what you do!

  26. David Rough on 3 October 2023

I was sorry to hear of the death of Brain Savin. I did some freelance work at BRMB during the mid-1980s and it was Brain who recruited, trained and mentored me. He was personable, affable, a great proponent of local radio and always determined to bring a professional approach to what was, at the time, a relatively young and sometimes chaotic medium. And, with his weekly Country Music show, Brian helped to widen the definition of the genre and include artists from beyond the confines of Nashville – a man ahead of his time and a man for all times. RIP.

  27. Bruce on 2 October 2023

I look forward to Soft Focus…another soul searching, journey into eternities of ones’ imagination. Please keep this particular programme till music and time are no longer…loyal listener and friend Bruce

  28. John from Manchester on 2 October 2023

    What a great radio station!

  29. ICR on 1 October 2023

Well done Johnny B and your tribute to Syd Lawrence in what would have been his 100th year – a super selection of tracks, with great information about the early days of the band, when Syd left the NDO, and was told by many members of the band that it was an awful mistake !
6 months later he was filling Theatres up and down the country !

  30. Renee on 1 October 2023

I can’t even begin to thank you for continuing to run Steyn’s s Song of the Week. Just a brief note of thanks and praise for your wonderful programming.

  31. Pepe Sobreruedas (Miami, FL, USA) on 1 October 2023

Thank you very much for your continued support and indulgence rebroadcasting “Steyn’s Song of the Week at Serenade Radio,” the only reason I tune in and meander to other excellent programing…So there you have it…this program’s life support radiates a pulse beyond the dead and dying, keeping your radio station alive beyond its corporal talents…May Serenade Radio live forever…

  32. Tony James on 1 October 2023

Once again, another rare appointment to listen, Sunday morning with Steve James.
Along with Dinner at 8, favourites on the excellent Serenade.Have a golden day to Mr Marriot.Keep it up Guys.Best regards Tony James.

  33. David on 30 September 2023

There are a few “oldies” programmes on various stations on saturday mornings…. but the clear standout is Jeff Owen’s on Serenade! He doesn’t play the obvious, like other shows, and every tune is a surprise. A great way to spend Saturday morning!

    • Jeff Owen on 30 September 2023

Hello David – That’s very kind of you, and I haven’t even paid you! Thanks for listening, and I’m pleased that you enjoy it. All the best.

  34. Martyn Bassey on 30 September 2023

Great music on the Johnny McAtasney show this morning. Always loved Julie Andrews “Feed The Birds” and brilliant to hear three songs by the wonderful Johnny Mathis. Could I suggest Malcolm Vaughan or Joni James as featured artist sometime please. Many thanks Johnny.

    • Johnny McAtasney on 30 September 2023

Hi Martyn. Thank you for your kind comments and for tuning in to the best time of the day! Yes, two international treasures celebrating their 88th birthdays this weekend in Johnny Mathis and Dame Julie. I will certainly add Malcolm and Joni to my list of Artists Of The Week. Bravo!

  35. Frank on 30 September 2023

My recommendation for Album Of The Week is Tony Bennett’s 1965 masterpiece, ‘If I Ruled the World: Songs for the Jet Set.’ The title track alone is outstanding.

  36. Chris Knowles on 29 September 2023

Just heard that an album will be featured daily. Any chance of an Andy Prior album being chosen? His music sits well with your programmes but is rarely heard. Thanks.

  37. Elaine on 29 September 2023

I love that I can depend on you playing many of the songs of two of my all time favorite singers-Ella Fitzgerald and Nancy Wilson. These two women are truly incomparable. No “modern” singer compares.

  38. ICR on 28 September 2023

What a treat in store – Johnny Beerling is featuring Syd Lawrence, recorded in his favourite Theatre – the Playhouse in Manchester. A great celebration of what would have been his 100th year – what a wonderful musical legacy he left !

  39. Judy Albutt on 26 September 2023

Am so excited to hear Johnny Beerling is featuring Syd Lawrence.I knew him well, following his orchestra for so many years! Bless you Syd 100 years would have been a real milestone!

  40. Margaret Jugl on 25 September 2023

Just love radio Serenade. I am a new listener from Sydney, Australia. Thank you, my ears and heart will be tuned daily. Margaret.🤗

  41. Frank on 25 September 2023

I was very sorry to hear of the passing of Rosemary Squires. She was a stalwart of our type of music in the late 1950s and, though she never reached the stardom heights of her contemporaries, it’s comforting to know she’ll be fondly remembered on Serenade.

  42. Pepe on 24 September 2023

I am very sorry to learn of Brian Savin’s passing…Thank you for continuing to air “Steyn’s Song of the Week,” not only because it pleasures me greatly and you granted my request to continue its rebroadcast, but because it is also a tribute to Brian’s legacy…I enjoy the show immensely and hope you continue its airing for a long time to come…

    • Mark Steyn on 24 September 2023

Thank you, Pepe. I listened to today’s show (“Over the Rainbow”), which I hadn’t heard since its original airing, and I noticed a dozen subtle tweaks Brian had taken the trouble to do and which would never even occur to most people. But they’re the difference between an okay show and a great show. I learned so much from him, and I shall miss him every time I sit down in front of a microphone.

  43. Barbara on 24 September 2023

Thank you for adding a photo of Vic Damone
So pleased I saw Serenade Radio posted on Facebook. Great music.

  44. Karen on 24 September 2023

Peter Tomlinson’s show is always a perfect relaxing sunday afternoon listen, but what an especially lovely program today dedicated to his friend Brian Savin. Well done Peter it was a lovely tribute .

    • Anthony Parkin on 25 September 2023

Karen, if I miss programmes I often catch the overnight repeats. I am doing that as I write this.
In coming weeks its unlikely I’ll miss any of the original transmissions. These are going to especially important as we head into Autumn/Winter. Dark cold days and nights. Difficulty getting out with poor public transport.
I’ll be under the duvet. Keeping warm. Music and my Serenade friends keeping me company.

  45. Martyn Bassey on 24 September 2023

Wonderful music on the Vic Groves show today. Great to hear Frank Sinatra, Caterina Valente, Nancy and Lee, and Louis Jordan who are just a few of my favourites. Many thanks.

    • Vic Groves on 24 September 2023

Thank you Martyn, It’s a pleasure to play all this great music. Regards, Vic.

  46. Wendy on 24 September 2023

I do love listening to the Dawn Chorus on a Saturday and Sunday… Worth waking up for on non working days (although my husband gets a bit fed up with the sunday 6am alarm ) …but why is there no Ed bio on the presenters page? The ‘new boys’ Vic and Adrian have a bio. But no Ed. Thank you for playing adiemus again today Ed. I never get fed up listening to that.

  47. Anthony Parkin on 24 September 2023

I am sorry about Brian Savin’s passing. I think others have said what I probably would.
I have found an informative piece about Brian. His long career and quotes from his Serenade Radio colleagues on a reliable website that talks of the radio business but I won’t post the link. I suspect that will not be acceptable. But I do hope Andy Marriott may find a way to put a link somewhere for others to see where it will be OK.

  48. Barbara on 23 September 2023

Just listened to the Crooner’s Club. Thank you for playing the great crooner Vic Damone ❤️
Please add his photo to the others at the top. Another crooner who is very rarely played is Tony Martin. Apologies if you have done but I’m a new listener.

    • Anthony Parkin on 23 September 2023

      Barbara,
Your comment allows me to say how much I enjoy John Walton’s Crooner’s Club. So much music squeezed into an hour. I was going to say good music. But all of the music on Serenade Radio is😊

John is having a break from presenting(doing exciting things)but I so welcome a replay of these programmes on the station. They still sound fresh. And who would know that they are not new.

The music never ages and the presentation is so informative and easy. Looking forward to rest of what remains to air.

      • John Walton on 23 September 2023

Thank you for your enthusiasm and appreciation, Anthony. I agree that the music from the Serenade Radio library never grows old. It’s still very encouraging, however, that you’re looking forward to the rest of this season of repeats! I hope you enjoy it.

    • John Walton on 23 September 2023

Thanks for listening, Barbara, and for your appreciation of Vic Damone. I agree that Tony Martin was an excellent crooner. He did feature once or twice in my Crooners Club programmes. Maybe he’ll come up soon.

  49. David Small on 23 September 2023

EVERGREEN A programme of light music introduced by ADRIAN JACKSON
    Produced by RICHARD GRAVES

Thank you Adrian for a lovely programme last night what a great start to the series which was your first last night, its a lovely mix of music that we used to hear on both “Your Hundred Best Tunes” and The late David Corbett’s “Light Programme” long may it last.

    • Adrian Jackson on 23 September 2023

Thank you David and Brian for your kind comments, Great to have joined the Serenade Radio family and I look forward to presenting again next Friday at 9pm,

  50. David on 23 September 2023

Superb music this morning!! Thank you!

  51. Pete on 23 September 2023

I love your radio station, big bands, vocals (I Was a friend of Miss Keely Smith) I worked for British singer Gary Miller in the 1950s, I’d love him on Serenade Radio. Keep up the good work.

    • Anthony Parkin on 23 September 2023

Pete, I remember Gary. Taken too soon. I discovered Keely Smith far too late in my life. But trying to make up for that with my own music library. Its great to hear her music on Serenade Radio. And more than what she did with Louis Prima.

  52. Elaine B on 23 September 2023

My sincere condolences in the passing of Brian to his family and to his co-workers at Serenade Radio. I am so thankful for this wonderful radio station as it is such a blessing to hear the great singers and beautiful music you provide us listeners. Thanks for everything.

  53. adie on 22 September 2023

Just found this delightful Radio Station, Listening to Dick Fisher, wonderful music and so informative. Wish I had found you earlier as my late father would have loved this. Thank you

    • Dick Fisher on 23 September 2023

Hi Adie. So pleased you’ve found Serenade and are enjoying the experience! Take a look at our website to find out more about our extensive range of programmes. No matter your musical preferences, there’s truly “something for everyone”.

  54. Brian Bunn on 22 September 2023

Really enjoyed your new Friday evening programme “Evergreen” (22 Sep). So refreshing that Serenade play instrumentals, such as this and “Music While You Work”. Keep up the good work, it is so appreciated 😊

  55. Frank on 22 September 2023

Wow! Just found your radio station and cannot thank you all enough for treating us to such a wonderful play list of music. Didn’t realise you depended on experienced announcers who work for FREE! Thank you so much…when I can catch up with my present outgoings I will be happy to send you a few quid. Meanwhile, please remember you’re making one human being a very happy bunny. Keep it up….

  56. Julian Williams on 21 September 2023

I’m a copywriter who writes radio commercials. I first met Brian in his BRMB days. What a producer! I followed him to Savin Productions. I remember him sprinkling magic onto every commercial I wrote. We’d stay in the studio debating passionately about sfx and intonation for hours. The results were always best of class. And award winning too. I adored working with Brian. Even though many years ago, my memories are like yesterday. Dear Brian, it was a pleasure and an honour to be in your company. With love…

  57. Sarah and Andrew on 21 September 2023

We were so sorry to hear the sad news about Brian and know you and he were very close as friends as well as colleagues. We miss hearing his voice on the radio and it was lovely to hear that he produced many great programmes to, including radio heroes recently. We are thinking of you all at serenade radio and his family and friends. May he rest in peace.

  58. Barrie Essex,Seaton Devon on 21 September 2023

Commiserations ,very sorry to hear the sad news .But,please, let the show go on. We’ll done,,Andy and everybody!

  59. Richard Tutin on 21 September 2023

RIP Brian Savin Condolences to all his family and colleagues at Serenade Radio

  60. Nick Hingley on 20 September 2023

I am desperately sad to hear the news of Brian Savin’s passing.
I remember Brian right from the start of BRMB and regularly listened to his late show once the station extended its hours. I always enjoyed the features and interviews that he did on BRMB – a lot of it necessary due to ‘needle time’ restrictions but very entertaining and informative.
And then, astonishingly, the biggest chunk of half a century on I found myself listening to Brian on Serenade in the same time slot. In between there was the stint at the much-missed Saga Radio.
All through Brian’s voice never changed and he sounded as young to me on Serenade as he did all those years ago on BRMB; and latterly he did such a brave performance to keep his show going in the face of a debilitating illness. The superb Song of the Week and more recently we have had the excellent Radio Legends series produced by Brian. I do hope there will be a means to have some more of these shows.
My sincere condolences to Brian’s friends and family.
Rest in Peace Brian. Thank you for helping bring this oasis of a station to fruition and may you find oodles of Ray Conniff in the great beyond.

  62. Karen on 20 September 2023

So very sorry to hear about the passing of Brian Savin. In addition to his presenting the programmes on SR that we hear at the end the words ‘ produced by Brian Savin’ is testament to his brilliant radio legacy. My sincere condolences to his family and his friends and colleagues at SR.

  65. Jonathan Summers on 19 September 2023

Thank you John for entertaining us every afternoon with your eclcetic mix of the Serenade brand of Easy Listening. Pure magic. Today you introduced us to The Carpenters version of “I Can Dream, Can’t I?” We had not heard this before and it must surely be the definitive version. Simply wonderful! We look forward to many more gems just like this one. Thank you, John and Lesley Summers

  66. Arthur Rattus on 19 September 2023

What a great show “Dance band days” is. All this fabulous vintage music we would never hear if i werent for Serenade Radio. Well done to Roger Williams and the team for this little gem . Long may it continue.

    • Paul in Rye on 19 September 2023

I second this Arthur, it’s a real weekly treat! Lovely to hear Vic Groves playing some dance band tracks on his fabulous new Sunday show too. Keep up the great work folks and thank you.

      • Vic Groves on 19 September 2023

Thank you for your kind words Paul. Regards, Vic

  67. Barbara Heathcote on 18 September 2023

Hi Andy thank you so much for playing Vic Damone, absolutely love him. So glad I found your radio show.

  68. Karen on 18 September 2023

I have just read that Roger Whittaker has died. How terribly sad. Although not a terribly fashionable thing to admit when i was a teenager i always loved his music and Serenade Radio reminded me of that when perhaps i had forgotten and brought his music back to me. So RIP Roger and thank you Serenade Radio for regularly playing this brilliant artist.

  69. Martyn Bassey on 17 September 2023

Great music as usual on Serenade today. Just like to mention the Vic Groves show. Absolutely love it. Thank you very much.

    • Vic Groves on 17 September 2023

Thank you very much Martyn. I’m pleased you enjoy the music. Regards, Vic

  70. Cathryn Yong on 16 September 2023

Hello dear presenters ! Just wanted to say hello and let you know that I think Serenade Radio truly lives up to its name and plays great easy listening numbers. Keep up the good work. BTW, I am listening to you via internet from across the pond in Michigan, USA. Have a lovely day. Cheers !

  71. Michael Hannon on 14 September 2023

What a pleasure to hear the Leroy Anderson medley on Music While You Work this morning. I bet that had plenty of feet tapping years ago.
Shame being in France means SR won’t let me have the app. I’d happily pay!

  72. Ian on 12 September 2023

Hello to All at Serenade Radio. I have been listening to Serenade Radio via my computer for quite some time now, so I feel guilty that I haven’t contributed til now. Thanks to all your presenters for their commitment, knowledge and unstinting efforts.

To listen to my kind of music without the constant intervention of repetitive and annoying adverts is just wonderful. I am constantly exhorting friends to “listen in” and have publicised your station to many of my acquaintances. I also listen via my smart speaker as often as I am able. I don’t want to single anyone out in particular but just to say thanks and well done to all of you !

  73. AL Pacheco on 9 September 2023

Listening from Costa Rica and love to play Serenade Radio to my mother, who gets transported to her youth years with dad,.. We LOVE the fun, peace and tranquility this station brings us. Thanks to my friend Orlando who recommended it. 🙂

  74. Wendy from Canvey Island on 7 September 2023

I very much enjoyed hearing Debby Boone singing you light up my life today. Lots of memories flooded back hearing that one. As it was playing i was thinking i must see what else she did . Then Andy Marriott said ‘ by far the best ting she ever did’…. So best not then 😁

  75. Israel Pickholtz on 4 September 2023

So sorry to hear that you are discontinuing Mark Steyn’s wonderful half hour. It’s the best thing anywhere.

  76. Frank on 4 September 2023

I’d love to hear some brass band or pipe organ music on Serenade. Maybe as a complement to Sing Something Simple.

    • Philip Cartwright on 4 September 2023

That’s a good idea Frank. Say half an hour of organ music on the lines of ‘The Organist Entertains’ which ran on Radio 2 for many years.

      • Andy Marriott on 5 September 2023

Every year we have a series of 13 programmes called “Hot Pipes”. 30 minutes of organ music introduced by an acknowledged expert in the field; Steve Ashley.
This year the programme was broadcast from early April until the end of June, on Thursday evenings at 9.30.
All being well Steve will be back in the new year.

  77. Liz Burns. US on 4 September 2023

Dismayed to learn that next weeks Mark Steyn’s Song of the Week will be the final show.
Why not just continue to air the ones you have?

    • Andy Marriott on 5 September 2023

This Sunday sees the final edition of Song of the week for now, hopefully Mark will be back with some new programmes when his health improves. However due to popular demand we will re-run some of the early shows in the same slot until Christmas.

  78. Pepe Sobreruedas on 3 September 2023

Wow! No more Mark Steyn’s “Song of the Week?” What a shame…Can’t you just repeat old shows until they both get better?

    • Andy Marriott on 5 September 2023

      Hi Pepe,
Yes, we are doing just that!

  79. Arthur Rossi on 3 September 2023

I am glad that the Brits have not given up on this music. Here in the US there is no going back for anything.
I listen to your station whenever I have some time. Please keep up the great work.

  80. Andrew Diprose on 2 September 2023

Thank you Peter Tomlinson, Neil Anthony and Brian Savin for another wonderful ‘Radio Heroes’ celebrating the late, and much-missed, Desmond Carrington. His Sunday programme was a ‘must listen’ for me in the same way that John Walton, and his ‘Musical Cavalcade’ – with the same easy-going and warm presenting style as Desmond – has been in recent years on Serenade Radio. I hope very much you’ll be commissioning another series of ‘Radio Heroes’.

    • Peter Tomlinson on 3 September 2023

      Hi Andrew and David,

Please see my response to Arthur and Anthony below. Thank you both for your kind comments, they are very much appreciated. The real heroes behind this series are Neil and Brian though. Mr Marriott has approached me to narrate a second series, which I would love to do, but no dates have been fixed so far. Advance notice will be forthcoming when there is positive news. Next week in the last of the present series Radio Heroes will be featuring Jack Jackson who revolutionised the art of playing records in the face of much opposition from Auntie BBC ! Hope you can tune in.

      • Neil Anthony on 3 September 2023

I’m thrilled by all the positive comments about Radio Heroes. Huge thanks must go to Mr Marriott for having the courage to green-light the series (from, as Johnny Mercer might have described me, a broadcasting neophyte). To Brian for his expertise and guidance and to Peter for his wonderful narration. As Peter mentions, this has very much been a labour of love. As someone who grew up with Alan and Benny and the other heroes and for someone who remembers Radio 2 when it knew what it was doing (to borrow Andy’s words), it has been an absolute joy too. Thanks to everybody who has listened and enjoyed the series. And keep listening. The best is yet to come!

        • Steve in Worcs. on 4 September 2023

          Hello Neil,

I’d just like to add my ‘voice’ to the chorus of appreciation and deep gratitude for the series.

Sadly, due to one ‘extended lunch’ and oddly-timed phone / internet calls , I have missed chunks or even whole episodes of this fabulous series, which has featured some of my favourite all-time broadcasters. Hopefully, the station will broadcast them again, if the licence allows?

As for a potential series 2, I would love to know that that is planned, and I have a solution to make sure I don’t miss any. Really looking forward to the last one, I vaguely remember Jack Jackson, such is the distance of time.

Once again, “thank you so much” to you and anyone connected with the series, and as always to Serenade Radio itself, for this wonderfully warm and hugely respectful series – the kind of radio that doesn’t exist anywhere else at all.

  81. David S on 2 September 2023

Thank you to Peter, Neil and Brian Savin for another Excellent programme Radio Heroes.
These programmes just get better every week . Loved Desmond Carrington and never missed his programmes. Lovely Memories .

  82. Arthur Rattus on 2 September 2023

I have been particularly looking forward to today’s Radio Heroes as i was a big fan of Desmond Carrington ‘s radio show, and it did not disappoint. It was lovely to hear his voice again. Hearing Peter Tomlinson describe the show and the variety of good music he played… makes me realise his output and the sound of his show was not dissimilar to programmes we hear on SR. He said of his listeners he ‘doesnt talk at them he talks to them’ and again that is just like the presenters of SR. Thankyou for devoting one of the shows to this wonderful man and for continuing his radio legacy.

    • Anthony Parkin on 3 September 2023

Arthur…you said so much of what I planned to say about Desmond. All Time Greats. The Radio Heroes series and those behind them. Serenade Radio and its presenters and music policy.

      Have I missed anyone out?

I became extremely nostalgic today. Memories of Mum and Dad. My younger self. Laughingly with Desmond’s long stay at Radio 2. I was the only one remaining.

Desmond’s attitude to the variety of music and being able to mix so many styles matches my own music library. It was much what I did myself for approx on hospital radio. How I tried to make that station sound. And had others come to me to answer questions of music they were unfamiliar with. Supply music they did not have.

It is why Serenade Radio. Its presenters deserve to succeed. And hopefully will be around for many years to come.

Its doing what I cannot see any other UK station is managing to as a domestic station.

And with the changes coming to BBC local radio(that is mainly the news and local content)being taken away. And finally the few specialist music programmes often again presented by once well known presenters on national BBC radio. Now veteran broadcasters they will be lost too.

Serenade radio is ever more precious. And we need to get it as much publicity as possible.

Finally I feel like saying it could be seen as a way to carry on Desmond’s legacy.

    • Peter Tomlinson on 3 September 2023

      Hi Arthur,
Thank you for your kind comments about Radio Heroes and in particular the Desmond Carrington programme. The series has very much been a labour of love especially for Brian and Neil. Andy Marriott is I believe planning a second series and hopefully this will see the light of day. It strikes me that there is something odd about the radio broadcasting world today that here we are on Serenade Radio, with next to no budget at all, every presenter giving their time and experience completely free, doing the work the BBC should be doing with all their financial and archive resources. Anthony thank you for all your comments too. So much positive response is not only most welcome but it has done much to cheer up Brain Savin who, as most of you know, is not too well these days.

  83. eric white on 2 September 2023

Geoff Owen I enjoy very much but has just come out with a load of twaddle about Dusty Springfield issuing 9 singles that failed before her first hit I only want to be with you.She had been with the springfields who had several hits and a couple of non-hits but the transition to hit making solo performer was immediate!

    • Jeff Owen on 2 September 2023

      Hello Eric.
I knew there was something wrong with that as I was saying it! It wasn’t quite right.
Dusty Springfield had recorded nine demo songs to try and launch her solo career, but none were deemed suitable as the guaranteed success that they wanted, until I Only Want Be With You came along. So even though she’d recorded the songs, none were released as singles, until the big one.
Well spotted! Thanks for listening. Glad you enjoy it.

  84. Andy Grahamme on 2 September 2023

I am such a huge fan of Serenade….its programming is just so very very good. In particular the Steve James weekend programmes. The music is an absolute delight. Thanks Steve….its so much appreciated.

  85. Frank on 2 September 2023

Just heard Wally Stott (who later became Angela Morley). A real pioneer in light music and equality. Brava, Serenade.

  86. Fraser Sutherland on 1 September 2023

Yes, Mark Steyn is courageous, no doubt about it.

  87. Colin Bishop on 1 September 2023

is the finest vocal group the four freshmen in the list of one of you

    • Andy Marriott on 1 September 2023

      Hi Colin,
The Four Freshman are heard regularly on SR. I know Kevin Taylor at the weekend in particular plays them a lot. Tune in Saturday and Sunday evenings at 9!

      Cheers,
      Andy Marriott, Station Manager.

  88. Mike Matthews on 1 September 2023

Just heard Des on your program, here is an anecdote from the days when I worked with him in Jersey Channel Islands 1976! “Des, was so well loved by absolutely everyone. He was a joy to work with, he was talented, so much fun, positive, enthusiastic, kind and a total professional.”
I worked with Des in Jersey Channel Islands, summer season 1977. One of the nicest people I have ever met. I used to sell his LP”s for him in the foyer. I had a sign made saying “Recommended by Morecombe and Wise” with a cut out of them behind me. He thought it was hilarious!!!!!

In the early days, when I moved to Australia [1981] he would ring me when he was in Sydney

  89. Karen on 31 August 2023

Until i started listening to Serenade Radio i never realised that Benny Hill was actually funny. My recollection of him was just a bloke being chased by women all the time. And you never hear him anywhere else. SR … Continuing to expand my horizons in more than just music 🙂

  90. Stuart Wilson on 31 August 2023

I was introduced to Serenade Radio by my old friend Mark Steyn. Well, what I mean is… he’s a man who says what I want to say but with panache and education. I was saddened when GBNews turned on him for expressing the views of the masses; I was worried when we heard of his health problems; I understand it’s difficult to be Mark Steyn and remain calm when passion is your trademark, be it songs, singers, politics. Mark Steyn may you continue to be an inspiration to us oldies with no voice, and may you continue to educate us all about the music we all love. Take it easy.

    • Steve in Worcs. on 2 September 2023

Spot on with every word, Stuart – Mark is a tour de force in any form of broadcasting, and his Song of the Week shows are unmissable for me.

  91. John on 29 August 2023

I’ve just remembered that David Jacobs had a lunchtime show weekdays on R2 in the late 80s, right after JY, you see. Serenade has reminded me of those happy days.

    • Steve in Worcs. on 2 September 2023

He did indeed, John! But I can’t remember if David was before or after an actor who was a surprisingly good presenter – ‘Hadliegh’ himself – Gerald Harper.

      • John on 2 September 2023

I’m fairly ‘adamadamant’ that Gerald Harper was on R2 in the late 80s on Saturdays around 1pm, dispensing chocolates and champagne 🥂. And he’s still with us, aged 92.

        • Steve in Worcs. on 2 September 2023

ISWYDT (I See What You Did There!) Ahhh, yes of course, it was Saturdays only – David on weekdays – good memory, John!

Yes he is still with us – I think he lives in Spain – saw him in a television clip a few years ago attending a festival there, and he still looked ‘vital’.

I must see if I can stream ‘Hadleigh’ over the internet.

        • David Purll on 3 September 2023

Gerald Harper was actually on Capital Radio on Sunday mornings with this champagne and Roses programme…. and Steve Wright did a similar format with Sunday Love Songs on R2

  92. Alison Weston on 28 August 2023

Smoke Gets in your Eyes was my Dad’s very most favourite song first heard by him sailing to South Africa back in 1935, having spent 6 years in Jersey, Channel Islands. I think he always got very nostalgic on hearing it. Lovely song, great music.

  93. Martyn Bassey on 28 August 2023

Very much enjoyed Soft Folkus this evening. Too many good songs to mention. Being Welsh I especially liked Ben i Waered by the family group Plu. Many thanks for a fine show.

    • Roger Williams on 29 August 2023

Hello Martyn, thank you for your kind comments. I think I should offer you the prestigious position of the Soft Folkus Welsh Correspondent. I had hoped to occupy the post myself especially after discovering that my great great grandfather was William Jones Williams – sadly he appears to come from Sussex. I’m pleased you enjoyed Plu, I’ve played one or two Martin Joseph songs and was pondering whether anything from Gorki’s Zygotic Mynci might suit. Any suggetions from beyond Offa’s Dyke will be gratefully received. I’m pleased you enjoyed the show. Roger

      • Martyn Bassey on 4 September 2023

Hello Roger. I don’t know a lot about Gorki’s Z M I’m afraid so I can’t comment about them. I was wondering if you could possibly dig out “Pontypridd” by 9Bach for your show at some time. Many thanks. Martyn.

  94. Edgar on 27 August 2023

I keep hearing the name Antonio Carlos Jobim. and when I do, I know I will like the music.

  95. Karen on 27 August 2023

I loved Steyn’s song of the week this week. Lilac Wine is one of my absolute favourite songs but i didnt realise that it wasnt a song from the 70s/80s or where it came from and that so many people had recorded it. Great story . Great show ( as usual)

    • Mark Steyn on 28 August 2023

Thank you, Karen. There’s no other song like “Lilac Wine” – and I love the way most people aren’t even aware that it had been around for thirty years before Elkie got to it.

      • Bernard Lazenbury on 28 August 2023

So many versions of this gem to choose from but Nina Simone’s takes some beating for emotional content. Also discovered an interesting take by Jeff Beck & Imelda May. Different but very enjoyable none the less.

  96. James on 27 August 2023

Really enjoyed last night’s Radio Heroes. What a great series. Well done to all involved at Serenade Radio. Great station.

  97. David Hill on 26 August 2023

Really enjoyed Steve James Breckfirst Show today, played some really good music, To Sir with love, Italian Girl, and Stranger on the shaw. Brought back a lot of memories of the 60s. I was only school age at the time but that decade brought us James Bond at the cinema John Barry did the music . England won the World Cup, The Beatles changed music forever. Mary Quant did the fashion and Vidal Sassoon did the hair. Great decade, we were the envey of the world.
Thanks Steve for the Music 😎😎😀😀

    • Steve James on 26 August 2023

Thank you very much David, it’s wonderful to be able to share some evocative sounds of the 60s.

  99. Jonathan Summers on 24 August 2023

Jane, Love your programme! Particularly loved your first choice yesterday: Sir Harry singing “On with the motely” from Pagliacci. Wonderful! I have often wondered why you and your colleagues don’t play more opera pops. Can I suggest something(s) from David Hughes’s lovely album “Songs You Love”. Serenade do play him on occassion, but not often enough for my liking. He was a wonderful singer, now sadly missed, and it would marvelous to hear him every now and then. Jon

  100. Dave Hilton. on 24 August 2023

Great music, I listen every day through most of the day. I particularly like Ella andFrank, and you play them often, thanks. Andy, I love your programme to start my day. Just as a point of interest, my old Dad used to say ” Toodle pip”. Lovely memories

    • Karen on 25 August 2023

Hi Dave. My dad used to say ‘ toodle pip’ too and until now ive never heard anyone else say it. I was very surprised the first time i heard Andy’s show.

Just catching up on the Dick Fisher show as i was too busy at work this morning to listen ( sorry)… I heard Madeleine Peyroux a little while ago. I think she is great and with a pretty unique style amongst modern singers. Thank you Dick and Serenade Radio for playing her.

    • Ray Burnett on 25 August 2023

Karen, I think Madeleine Peyroux sounds a bit like Billie Holiday – which is a compliment.
