Looking forward to Sean Usher’s show after seeing the ad on your Facebook page. He’s got a calming voice for the early hours.

  2. Bazza on 13 February 2026

Hi, re your comment about black cats. I’ve got two and for me they’re lucky lol.

  3. Barbara Heathcote on 11 February 2026

Hi Andy. Just listened to the whistling Muzzy Marcelino it brought to mind (I have a very strange mind) a man who used to whistle bird sounds and think he yodelled as well. Ronnie Renalde. Not sure if any of you remember him.

    • Steve in Worcs. on 12 February 2026

I remember him, Barbara, he was still appearing on the occasional variety television show in the 1960s (The Good Old Days, perhaps?), most memorably for “If I Were a Blackbird” (1950), one of his most famous songs from this period. He only left us 11 years ago, at 91, and there is a comprehensive Wikipedia age for him.

      • Barbara Heathcote on 12 February 2026

Thanks Steve. I googled him and he whistled the whole of The Dream of Olwyn. He was brilliant. Be nice if he was featured on Serenade Radio at some point. If I put my lips together I can’t even make a noise never mind a whistle.

        • Simon McLean on 12 February 2026

I’ve got an EP where he sings TV themes like Robin Hood and The Buccaneers which is good fun! There’s an album he did in 1970 which I’ve got my eye on for Music Box too, if I can get hold of a copy.

          • Paul Ruddock on 12 February 2026

I think I might have a copy of that very 1970 LP Simon, from memory it’s on the Major Minor label. I’ll let you know if I can find it.

        • Steve (not Humphrey Bogart) in Worcs on 13 February 2026

          Hi Barbara,

Me too (on the whistling)! And Lord knows, I’ve watched Lauren Bacall show me (and Humphrey Bogart- he was ‘Steve’ in “To Have and Have Not”) how to do it enough times….😍 Many times! Many, many times! 🥰

          • Barbara Heathcote on 13 February 2026

Hi Steve (not Humphrey Bogart). I wondered if anyone would get what I was inferring. Like you I’ve tried and it just sounds pathetic. Not seen the film for years.

  4. Tony Gilliam on 11 February 2026

Am loving the tracks by both The Northern Dance Orchestra and The Midland Radio Orchestra that you play.I understand these are available on a CD?Could you please point me in the direction where I can buy them?

    • Simon McLean on 11 February 2026

You can get them from the website northerndanceorchestra dot org dot uk (I don’t think I can post direct links here!). Highly recommended!

  5. Barbara Heathcote on 10 February 2026

Thank you for my serenade radio badge. Very honoured. I’ve added my favourite Vic Damone song. All the Things you are.

  6. Neil Dalrymple on 10 February 2026

    Superb.
    Every day it’s quality!
I meant to say Christmas was wonderful on Serenade. My life is richer for it
    THANK YOU!

  7. Helen Dowell on 10 February 2026

Love Andy’s programmes. A very nice way to start weekday mornings. Thankyou Andy for all your hard work & for Serenade Radio.

  8. Randall Riley on 10 February 2026

Listening to you guys streaming “A Handful Of Songs” by The Oscar Brandenburg Orchestra. Such an outstanding big band that we don’t hear often enough. Their version of “I Dream of You” is exceptional. Thanks for keeping good music alive!

    • Simon McLean on 10 February 2026

Thank you, they really are superb, aren’t they? I got hold of another of their albums a few weeks ago, which I hope to play on Music Box before too long!

  9. Martyn Bassey on 9 February 2026

Fabulous show once again with Johnny Mac on Saturday morning. Some of my favourite songs by Vikki Carr, Glen Campbell, Helen Reddy, Clifford T Ward, Carly Simon, and Albert Hammond to name just a few. Loved the three songs by Jose Feliciano as well. Many thanks Johnny 👍

    • Johnny Mac, A Little Night Music on 9 February 2026

Thank you, Martyn – very much appreciated. My artist of the week this Saturday morning from 3am is Joni Mitchell.

  10. Suzy on 8 February 2026

Ed Wellman is so warm and funny. He has me laughing at snippets of his world (especially what’s left in the fridge to share with us) and welling up over his oh-so-beautiful music choices. I’ve now got a newfound appreciation of Aled Jones (just like your Nan, Ed!). Thanks for my weekend Serenade feel-good factor.

  11. Barbara Heathcote on 8 February 2026

Hi Vic. Yes there’s a few of us Vic Damone fans. Thanks for playing his songs.

    • Vic Groves on 8 February 2026

Always a pleasure Barbara. Thanks for getting in touch.

  12. Jane Bozian on 8 February 2026

Many thanks Steve James for playing Jackie Trent 7.10 From Suburbia for me this morning! What a superb show you present, many songs I haven’t heard for years and such a perfect radio voice.

    • Steve James on 9 February 2026

Thank you for reminding me of that track Jane, it was a pleasure to give it a spin!

  13. Mark Croak on 7 February 2026

Serenade is the very best station. They play all my favourites and more. Where else in 2026 could you listen to Doris Day, Matt Monro, Alma Cogan and Sinatra?
Thanks from The Doris Day Archive.

  14. Colin Bunyan on 7 February 2026

BBC radio stations no longer play this wonderful music. Thank you Serenade Radio 🎶🎶❤️

  15. Ron Oliver on 6 February 2026

Just dropped a few quid in the cookie jar to keep the music playing while I’m writing my next epic. Thanks for being an oasis of class in this world….

  16. Sandra R on 6 February 2026

Hi Andy, Thank you so much for playing Theme from a Summer Place this morning,my all time favourite.
This version was good, but still prefer Percy Faiths version, but this was still lovely to hear .

  17. Barbara Heathcote on 5 February 2026

Hi Andy I think Fascinating Rhythm must be one of Vic’s shorter songs. I have 16 LPs and about 8 CDs inc box sets but that song is not on any of them.

  18. Gerri Hobbs on 5 February 2026

A Huge Comfort Blanket of Sheer Nostalgia!
Thank you for bringing back those wonderful memories of my childhood…

  19. Helen on 5 February 2026

    Good morning to all.
Just heard Sonia whistling her words..Superb! With the happiest of respect, the whistling reminds me of the dear Clanger conversations 😄. (for those that remember or know the Clangers) Really love Sonia’s morning show. 10am the kettle goes back on.
    Thankyou Sonia 🤗

    • Sonia Beldom on 6 February 2026

Oh, thank you Helen! Whistling is a universal language isn’t it? So glad you’re enjoying Serenade Radio and mine’s a cuppa with milk, no sugar ( you just tried whistling that, didn’t you?) Sonia x

  20. Roland Berger on 5 February 2026

Every Wednesday I enjoy the Frank Chacksfield hour at 6 p.m. but yesterday he seemed having been out of his mind. He actually announced the world famous composition “Valse des fleurs” (Nutcracker ballet) by Peter Tchaikovsky as a composition by Igor Stravinsky! I can imagine how many telephone calls have reached the BBC when this programme was originally broadcasted. – Nevertheless thank you very much for your marvellous programmes!

  21. David Purll on 5 February 2026

John Hellings…. many thanks for you featuring Dudley Moore. What a superb jazz pianist he was! Many thanks for your broad cross section of jazz festured in you programmes!

  22. Michael Dore on 4 February 2026

Such a great station & always playing wonderful tracks. Its a joy to listen to. Thank you. Great presenters too. Sonia Beldom’s programme is a particular favourite.

    • Sonia Beldom on 6 February 2026

Hi Michael. Thank you for lovely comment and glad you’re enjoying the music and all that Serenade has to offer music lovers. Sonia x

  23. Barbara Heathcote on 2 February 2026

I’ve just sent a small donation to you. Help towards some ginger nut biscuits with your morning cuppa. Thank you for a wonderful radio station.

    • Andy Marriott, Station Manager on 2 February 2026

Thanks Barbara, that’s very kind. I think I might throw caution to the wind and get some chocolate Hobnobs!

      • Barbara Heathcote on 2 February 2026

Hi Andy sounds even better. Dunking chocolate in hot coffee

  24. Barry Williams on 2 February 2026

How great to hear Dean Martin singing ‘The Door is Still open to my Heart’ tonight . My late wife Eileen loved Dean Martin and I bought her the album that this song was from in the seventies.
She used to love to listen to it whilst doing the ironing! This song was a particular favourite of hers.
Where else would you hear this but on Serenade !
    Thanks for the memories

    Regards Barry

  25. Barbara Heathcote on 2 February 2026

Hi John. 3 Vic Damone in a row. Fabulous. Thank you

  26. Ian Simmonds on 1 February 2026

The Lincolshire Poacher? How about making room for Rambling Syd Rumpole’s version? Great show as always Roger!

    • Roger Williams on 1 February 2026

Thank you Ian! Rambling Sid….now there’s a thought….. might give him a whirl. I’m sure Marriott has played him in his nonsense slot!

      Thank you for listening

      Roger

  27. Barbara Heathcote on 1 February 2026

Hi Andy and all presenters. My memory goes back a long time. Have you ever played a Marion Ryan song? If so I apologise. I missed it. She also had 2 sons Paul and Barry Ryan. Eloise by Barry is fantastic, a bit of a marathon but well worth a listen.

    • David Yarnall on 3 February 2026

I can’t remember when Barbara but I know I’ve played music from all three. I’ll have to have a firk and see if I can find the tracks again.

  28. Helen Dowell on 1 February 2026

The Dawn Chorus is a must for me every Saturday and Sunday. Big thanks to Ed for such a beautiful programme.

  29. Jackie Newark on 31 January 2026

Thank you so much Cyndy for playing “Guantanamera” by The Sandpipers for me this afternoon. You made my day and yes, I was dancing the rhumba in my head!

  30. Valerie Busher on 31 January 2026

Just found you via Facebook, looking forward to listening

  31. Jane Bozian on 31 January 2026

So lovely hearing one of my all-time songs from Cindy & The Settlers, Major To Minor!
Tony Hatch wrote some brilliant songs, this one included.
Thank you for a fab Radio station! 🎶❤

    • Mark Sutherland on 31 January 2026

Not forgetting the late great Jackie Trent who wrote the lyrics to Major to Minor.

      • Jane Bozian on 31 January 2026

Yes, indeed Mark 😀 One of my favourite songs by Jackie is 7.10 From Suburbia, but it’s never played…

        • Steve James on 1 February 2026

In addition to ‘Mark Anthony’, early in his career Tony also wrote songs under the name ‘Fred Nightingale’ – and Jane I’ll be only too happy to play ‘7.10 from Suburbia’ for you next weekend, as I think that’s a great track too!

          • Jane Bozian on 1 February 2026

Thank you Steve, that would be lovely to hear it again 😀

  32. Martyn Bassey on 31 January 2026

Great to hear Rocky Mountain High by John Denver this morning. Enjoyed the three songs by Ronnie Hilton, and the lovely Theme From A Summer Place by Percy Faith. Many thanks Johnny Mac. Fabulous music 😊👍

    • Johnny Mac, A Little Night Music on 31 January 2026

Thank you, Martyn. My artist of the week next Saturday is Puerto Rican hero, José Feliciano.

  33. Andy Grahamme on 31 January 2026

Steve James continues to come up with some fantastic music at the weekends…this morning the Dusty B side and our regular dose of Tony Hatch…and now Stuart Linnell making lunchtime and early afternoon a joy….thanks so much guys xxx

    • Stuart Linnell on 31 January 2026

Thank you Andy. I am so pleased that you enjoyed this afternoon’s show, and I totally agree with you about Steve James. He always presents a great show.

  34. Nick Hingley on 31 January 2026

Those of us in the UK who can recall a station called Radio 2 will be sad to learn of the death of Nigel Ogden, who presented ‘The Organist Entertains’ from 1980 until the programme was (in BBC parlance) ‘rested’ in 2018. Given the nature of his programme and the length of his tenure I rather assumed he was much older than his just 71 years.

Nigel brought a lot of quiet enthusiasm to the programme which was another of those that broadened my musical horizons. A talented organist, I know that Nigel’s playing has been featured by Steve Ashley on his Hot Pipes programme.

    RIP Nigel Ogden

    • Brian Bunn on 1 February 2026

Thoroughly agree 👍 When I stopped listening to R2 years ago, I thought that was the end of organ music, but so pleased to discover “Hot Pipes” on Serenade 😊

  35. Helen on 31 January 2026

Absolutely wonderful to hear The Osmonds, One Bad Apple today on Jeff Owen’s fabulous programme. Actually I loved every track as always. Thankyou Jeff.

  36. Angela Clifton on 31 January 2026

The gentle, positive and smiley voice guaranteed to set the weekend off to a good start. Thank you, Ed. Now, porridge next, or dinner for breakfast?! 😆

  37. Adrian H on 31 January 2026

Thank you, Johnny, for adding Vic Damone to your future spotlight feature on the early show.

    • Barbara Heathcote on 31 January 2026

Happy to see another fan of Vic Damone. My all time favourite singer

      • Johnny Mac, A Little Night Music on 31 January 2026

Thanks all, I’ll be featuring Vic as my artist of the week on the show soon.

  38. Sandra R on 31 January 2026

Hi Steve,Thank you for playing some memorable music this morning, so many memories come flooding back, especially the Brook Brothers…Look for a Star, haven’t heard that since the 60s.Keep the music playing. Thank you again.

    • Steve James on 31 January 2026

Thank you Sandra, it’s amazing how music can stir the memories. Incidentally, I have another nice one by The Brook Brothers- ‘Tell-Tale’, which I shall dust off for a spin next week.

      • Mark Sutherland on 31 January 2026

“Tell-Tale” another Tony Hatch/Mark Anthony song and production. Great show as usual today Steve.

        • Steve James on 1 February 2026

Thank you Mark, that’s very kind. Glad you enjoyed it.

  39. Barbara Heathcote on 31 January 2026

Morning Steve. Yes I’m fine and well thank you. Even better for hearing PJ singing Maria. Loved it

    • Steve James on 31 January 2026

Hi Barbara, glad you caught it! It is a great recording isn’t it? I’ll check out his albums and see what else I can find to play.

    • Barbara Heathcote on 31 January 2026

Steve I’m not an early bird at weekends but that was a respectable time. Look forward to hearing more.

  40. Barbara Heathcote on 30 January 2026

Just listened to a great hour of swing music. Got the feet tapping as usual Paul. Seeing Ozzie Nelson reminded me I might have a photo of the Nelson clan somewhere. I used to get film annuals for Christmas when little and of course Ricky Nelson was a famous actor in those days.

    • Paul Ruddock - Swing Time on 30 January 2026

Barbara, thank you! Glad to have got those feet tapping again, it’s definitely happy music and no mistake! I have quite a few Ozzie Nelson sides so you’ll likely hear more of him and his band in the coming weeks, some of which feature his wife, and Ricky’s Mum, Harriet Hilliard on vocals.

  41. Mark Sutherland on 30 January 2026

Thank you for showcasing Jackie Trent and Tony Hatch’s The Two of Us as your album of the week. So glad I recommended it to Serenade Radio Producer extraordinaire Neil Anthony and provided him with my copy of the album for you to use. Great to hear how enthusiastic the presenters were as they played tracks from it.

It certainly cheered me up as I recover from a broken arm! Great that Serenade Radio regularly features Jackie and Tony as songwriters and performers.

    Keep up the great work!

    • Andy Grahamme on 31 January 2026

I’m guessing the album must be worth a few bob!!!

      • Mark Sutherland on 31 January 2026

Hi Andy, it is quite collectible along with many other of Jackie and Tony’s solo and duet recordings. I bought the LP in the mid-1990s. The CD reissue I bought over 20 years ago, though sadly out of print.

  42. Pat on 29 January 2026

Hi Andy, Great programme tonight, thankyou.. Super to hear a David Whitfield record….fond memories of him at the Nottingham Empire in the late 1950s

  43. Barbara Heathcote on 29 January 2026

Nick Hingley. That was a bonus. 😜

  44. Barbara Heathcote on 29 January 2026

Just heard PJ Proby “Somewhere”. Great memories of my teens when a lot of us girls were in love with him Especially with his big velvet bow in his hair. Thanks David.

    • Nick Hingley on 29 January 2026

And nothing to do with him splitting his trousers? 😉

  45. Helen on 29 January 2026

Always enjoy Abdy’s programmes, and todays was particularly lovely. Every track superb. Thanks Andy.

  46. Barbara Heathcote on 28 January 2026

Hi John. You must be psychic I was only thinking this morning that it would be nice to hear Clint Eastwood or Lee Majors sing the songs from Paint Your Wagon. And voila just heard Clint Eastwood. Thank you.

    • Gwen Broomside on 30 January 2026

      Lee Marvin*

      • Barbara Heathcote on 30 January 2026

Gwen Broomside. I didn’t realise I’d typed Lee Majors. 😄. Obviously Lee Marvin
Not the 6 million dollar man.

  47. Jackie Newark on 28 January 2026

One of the greatest things about this radio station is NO ADVERTS! And this is all down to the wonderful presenters who do not get paid – they give their time for free. What dedication so that we can listen 24/7 to great music.

  48. Sjaak Roodenburg on 27 January 2026

There’s hardly a day that I don’t listen to your wonderful station. Civilised sounding and well informed announcers, with great music from an era that’s completely forgotten on most radio stations. Especially in the evenings Serenade Radio has some very interesting, great programs, of which you can hear that they are made with passion. Thanx!!!

  49. Kathy in California on 27 January 2026

Thanks again, Mark Steyn, for prompting me to search harder for the background lyrics on Dean Martin’s “Memories are Made of This.” Turns out it’s relatively easy to find karaoke videos online, which reveal that the obscured lines are
“I was rover, but now it’s over
It was a happy day when you came my way to tell me
    Sweet sweet…” etc.
Serenade Radio, where entertainment encourages exploration.

  50. Barbara Heathcote on 25 January 2026

Enjoyed Steve James programme this morning but missed yesterday as having a bout of IBS and wasn’t up in time so if played PJ Proby I missed it. 😞 I’ll be listening next week.

    • Steve James on 25 January 2026

I’m sorry you’ve been feeling out of sorts Barbara, and don’t worry I’ll be sure to play some PJ to perk you up next weekend!

      • Barbara Heathcote on 25 January 2026

Thanks Steve. I was annoyed with myself and didn’t want you to play PJ and no acknowledgement from me.

  51. Jim Reilly on 24 January 2026

One for Steve James and his “Late Night Extra” show – can I suggest a track (or two, or even four) from Robin Gibb’s great unreleased album “Sing Slowly Sisters”? Although recorded mainly in 1970, any of the tracks would slot in nicely with almost all of your own wonderful choices.

    • Steve James on 25 January 2026

That’s an interesting suggestion, Jim. I’m familiar with the album ‘Robin’s Reign’ and assume ‘Sing Slowly Sisters’ was a proposed follow-up? I’ve never heard it, so will certainly investigate further. I play quite a few early 70s tracks on Late Night Extra, so it would certainly fit in.

      • Jim Reilly on 25 January 2026

        Steve.

You’re right that “Sing Slowly Sisters” was supposed to be the follow-up album to his debut, but for whatever reason was shelved until it turned up on the “Saved By The Bell” CD collection around seven or eight years ago, which is where I discovered it, after years of believing that it was legend as opposed to fact. Indeed, it is well worth investigating.

  52. Vanessa-Ann Dowsett on 24 January 2026

Thank you Adrian for a great Showstoppers again this week. May I make a suggestion for a future programme. From Les Miserables, Alun Armstrong and cast in the live version of Master of the House please
    Thank you in anticipation

    • Adrian on 24 January 2026

Hello Vanessa-Ann, thank you for listening and I’m thrilled you enjoyed Showstoppers tonight.
I’ll feature your request in my programme next week, Great choice and I look forward to it.
Have a lovely week and please keep listening to Serenade radio. Adrian

  53. David Small on 24 January 2026

Thank you Adrian for another lovely selection of music from the Musicals and included two of my favourites Martin Guerre and Miss Siagon , David

    • Adrian on 24 January 2026

Thank you for your kind comments David, I’ll feature more Boublil and Schönberg next week. There will also be a special programme coming soon where Alain and Claude Michel will join me for great reflections and discussions about their life in musical theatre. Thanks again for listening

  54. Barbara Heathcote on 24 January 2026

For Sandra in Fort Lauderdale. I agree, currently listening to him here in UK.
Mark. Which pub shall we meet in before next weeks programme. I’ll treat you to a few if it helps you tell stories out of school. 🤣

    • Mark Steyn on 26 January 2026

Thanks, Barbara. My favourites are the Royal Oak and the Rose & Crown. But I can’t remember which village. Possibly the Royal Oak in Milton-under-Wychwood. Or the Rose & Crown in Wychwood-under-Milton. Or the Oak & Crown in Milton-under-Rose. Must remember not to drink so much I forget to pick up a business card…

      • Barbara Heathcote on 26 January 2026

Phew! Mark saved myself a few Bob. Bit too far for me to travel from Derbyshire

  55. Sandra, Fort Lauderdale, Florida on 24 January 2026

Mark Steyn, thank you so much!
Your program is absolutely wonderful today! I love this with Frank Sinatra and Dinah Shore!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
    Have a fantastic weekend

    • Nancy on 24 January 2026

Haven’t heard Come Prima in years. Makes me think of Sundays in New York listening to the Italian radio station in Connecticut when I was a kid. Dad belting it out as only he could (he had a great voice). Thanks for the memory Mark Steyn.

      • Mark Steyn on 26 January 2026

“Come Prima” is pretty great, Nancy. I had no idea they had an Italian radio station in Connecticut. Maybe I’ll try to talk Andy Marriott into letting us go all-Italian for a day.

        • Nancy on 26 January 2026

My childs’s memory probably created an Italian radio station from what was an “Italian Hour” program from the late 50s/early 60s. That said, I’d be delighted in an all-Italian On The Town offering! Please don’t forget Carlo Buti.🇮🇹

          • Fraser Sutherland on 31 January 2026

            Agreed 100%, Nancy.

    • Mark Steyn on 26 January 2026

Thank you, Sandra. I wish they could bottle that Frank’n’Dinah chemistry and distribute it to other would-be duettists. There is a great scholarly monograph to be written on the woeful state of duetting.

  56. Martyn Bassey on 24 January 2026

What a joy to listen to Sean Usher and Johnny Mac on the Night Shift earlier on. Five hours of fabulous music. Brilliant!! Many thanks to you both 👍👍

    • Nancy on 24 January 2026

      Ditto!

    • Johnny Mac, A Little Night Music on 24 January 2026

      Thank you both.

My artist of the week next Saturday from 3am is Ronnie Hilton, whose centenary I’ll be commemorating.

  57. Adrian H on 24 January 2026

Nice tribute earlier to Neil Diamond as he turns 85 today.

  58. Dave Edwards on 24 January 2026

Superb show, wonderful music..and Colin Blundstone..thank you Jeff.

  59. Helen on 24 January 2026

Fabulous music choices as always on the Great Oldies programme with Jeff Owen. Also loved the story of the cow that can pick up a broom & scratch it’s own back. Great stuff!

  60. Barbara Heathcote on 22 January 2026

Hi Andy. On your morning show we have the pleasure of your company for 2 1/2 hours but it’s been shortened for the evening repeat, how do you decide what to cut out.

  61. Rod Hardisty on 21 January 2026

I never miss “Sing Something Simple” on a Sunday night, along with other shows. Serenade Radio is such a professional sounding station, a credit to all involved.

  62. Tony Gilliam on 20 January 2026

I would strongly recommend anyone who likes the sort of music which used to be played on the BBC Light and Radio 2 (before it was cannibalised into Radio 1 the 2nd) to listen to Serenade Radio. You won’t be disappointed!

  63. David Hilton on 19 January 2026

You have probably been asked this many times.
“Music while you work” I remember from the 1950s, working in a factory, are these original recordings?

    • Brian Reynolds on 20 January 2026

All of the MWYW programmes which you hear on Serenade Radio are the original transmissions. The programme originally ran, without a break from 1940 to 1967 and was revived several times in the eighties and early nineties. All of the ‘revival” programmes still exist as well as several hundred of the original series. It was originally intended as a wartime measure to boost morale in factories, but quickly caught on with the general public and actually achieved an audience of ten million. This seems impossible, but as it was broadcast on the Home Service and Light Programme simultaneously and the Third Programme didn’t start until the evening, so there was nothing else to listen to. It seems to me that music was so much better in those days. a good tune being an essential ingredient. I think that ‘Music While You Work’ is pure joy to listen yo and I hope that it will continue to entertain Serenade radio listeners for many years to come.

  64. Nicola Timmerman on 18 January 2026

I remember What Is This Thing Called Love from the film The Russia House. Towards the end Sean Connery played the melody. Beautiful.

  65. Barbara Heathcote on 18 January 2026

Hi Steve. I don’t normally listen to serenade early mornings but Wow never expected to hear PJ Proby played. How I loved him as a teenager much to parents’ disgust. Especially after splitting his trousers on tv. I bought his “Hold Me” single record even though no player. I had to take round to friends just to hear it. Great memories.

    • Steve James on 19 January 2026

Hi Barbara, fortunately trouser-splitting on the radio is not such a problem! ‘To Make A Big Man Cry’ is an excellent single, in fact I think it’s his best. I was surprised to find he had no less than eleven hits in the UK. I will see if I can dig out something else from the great man for you next weekend.

      • Barbara Heathcote on 19 January 2026

Hi Steve. Thank you for replying. “Somewhere” was a great hit if I remember. He did stretch out his southern drawl a bit too much sometimes. He was on the Wheeltappers and Shunters Club recently re broadcast on tv .

  66. Kathy in California on 18 January 2026

Mr. Steyn — thank you for comparing renditions of “Memories are Made of This,” and especially for identifying Dean Martin’s backup group! It has always driven me crazy that I can’t decipher the words those men are singing in the background. Do you know what their lyrics are? Thank you from the Pacific coast.

    • Nancy on 19 January 2026

The backup singers in Dean Martin’s “Memories Are Made of This” perform the following lyrics:
The backup vocalists (The Easy Riders) are singing:
“The sweet, sweet memories you gave-a me”
“You can’t beat the memories you gave-a me”

    • Mark Steyn on 19 January 2026

Nancy’s right, but, on the Dean version, a little later on there are some other words that the Easy Riders sing and that have no equivalent in the Mindy Carson original and aren’t on the sheet music. No idea what they are; maybe the guys just improvised them in the studio. But I shall investigate further, Kathy. Sweet sweet memories are made of investigating impenetrable backing vocals…

      • Neil on 20 January 2026

Enjoyed the Under my Skin retrospective very much. After hearing the second Sinatra version now I know where Stan Freeburg got his inspiration

      • Kathy in California on 27 January 2026

Thanks again, Mark Steyn, for prompting me to search harder for the background lyrics on Dean Martin’s “Memories are Made of This.” Turns out it’s relatively easy to find karaoke videos on line, which reveal that the obscured lines are
“I was rover, but now it’s over
It was a happy day when you came my way to tell me
        Sweet sweet…” etc.

And the award for ‘Best Segue of 2026’ goes to Steve James for his ‘Julie Felix – San Francisco’ followed by ‘Baker Street Philharmonic – Woodstock’. With a supplementary prize of a tube of Smarties for playing ‘Orange Bicycle – Message To Mary’ after those delights.

The funny thing is that although ‘San Francisco’ and ‘Woodstock’ were both played as cover versions, they were still so evocative of that special time when the Sixties were turning into the Seventies. Thanks for giving the memory cells a good stir tonight. How lucky are those of us who caught the spirit of those songs the first time around.

    • Steve James on 19 January 2026

Hi Dave, yes I thought those first two tracks caught the spirit of the time rather beautifully- it’s a shame Julie Felix seems largely forgotten now, as she was popular enough for the BBC to give her a colour series in 1967, featuring some stellar musical guests from The Kinks to Leonard Cohen. Thank you for the virtual smarties- I hope you remembered to ‘Buy Some For Lulu’ as the ad used to go! And with that I’ll hop on my Orange Bicycle and pedal into the sunset…

  68. Sharon Lane on 17 January 2026

Hi just loving the tunes tonight on The Dance Band Days. You never disappoint! Keep up the good work!

Ps can we have a few more
    Edmundo Ros tunes Paul?

    • Paul Ruddock on 17 January 2026

Thanks for listening Sharon and so chuffed you’re enjoying the tunes!

The boss (Roger) loves a bit of Edmundo Ros too (I mean, who doesn’t!?!) – so I’m sure he’ll let me sneak a few more in for future shows.

      Best wishes

      Paul

Ps can we have a few more
    Edmundo Ros tunes Paul?

    • Roger Williams on 18 January 2026

There’s a bit of a risk involved in playing Edmundo Ros – I’m always very tempted to get my maracas out!

      • Paul Ruddock on 19 January 2026

Not again Mr W; put them away! 😉

  70. Barbara Heathcote on 17 January 2026

Hi Mark. I heard you mention The Red Shoes. I saw that film at our local cinema probably in the 50s. If anyone interested it’s on BBC 4 on Thursday 22nd at 10.10 pm. I knew I’d seen it advertised and then you mentioned it.

    • Mark Steyn on 19 January 2026

That movie’s always worth watching, Barbara. A few years back, the British Film Institute ranked it as the ninth greatest British film of all time. My kids, who saw it for the first time this Christmas, will never forget it.

  71. Tony Martin on 17 January 2026

As on every Saturday morning, listening to Mr. Owen’s show. We listen to the station regularly during the week, have done for years.
    We love it ❤️

  72. Vanessa-Ann Dowsett on 17 January 2026

Good morning Johnny, thank you for another great show. I was off by one year on each of guess the year. Must pull my socks up! Have a great week to your family and to the Serenade radio family

    • Johnny Mac, A Little Night Music on 17 January 2026

Awww, Vanessa-Ann – it’s all about the taking part! Best wishes to you and yours.

  73. Nancy on 17 January 2026

I really appreciate the care and effort that goes into the programs on SR, especially the “middle of the night” programs (hi Johnny Mac!). Many thanks from my corner of the northwest states🥰

    • Johnny Mac, A Little Night Music on 17 January 2026

I’m blushing now, Nancy! Talk to you at the ‘best time of the week’, next week!

  74. Patricia Pembleton on 16 January 2026

Hi Andy, I’ve only recently discovered Serenade radio. Just to say what a great station it is. I’m not sure whether you are aware how it helps people with Alzheimer’s. Unfortunately my husband, an 87 year old, whilst very active has a certain amount of memory loss and confusion. However is able to sing along with almost all of your record choices….its amazing that he’s able to remember when being prompted! A great show indeed….thankyou, Keep up the good work, regards Pat

    • Andy Marriott, Station Manager on 19 January 2026

      Hi Pat,
What a lovely message. Thank you very much.
I am so glad that our humble efforts have such a wonderfully positive effect.
      Thank You for sharing that.
All the best to you and your husband.

  75. Barbara Heathcote on 16 January 2026

Just spent an hour foot tapping to some great big band music. Tommy Dorsey Gene Kruper and Glen Miller. Thanks Paul.

    • Paul Ruddock - Swing Time on 16 January 2026

      Hello Barbara

Great to hear that tonight’s show got your feet tapping – next week I’ll try and get you dancing round the kitchen too! Lots more swinging tune to come and all from the original 78s of course.

Thanks for your support and keep listening!

      Best wishes

      Paul

  76. Dems on 16 January 2026

My first time visiting your radio. Correct me if I am wrong, but it seems that you’re not playing the popular songs of the artists.

    • Nancy on 16 January 2026

Keep listening, SR is a fabulous station!

  77. Karen on 14 January 2026

In the frank chacksfield hour a lady has just sung ‘Smilin Through’ . I had to sing that as part of my o level music project back in the 80s. And I have never heard it sung by anyone on the radio before or since. We can always count on Serenade Radio to keep our memories flowing. Thank you.

  78. Barbara Heathcote on 13 January 2026

Hi Andy. Thanks for the Purple People Eater. Try singing that after a few. 🤣. I’ll always stick to Vic Damone.

  79. Terry Webb on 13 January 2026

Hi Andy, S’ Wonderful by The Kirby Stone Four is a highly amusing track (I think so, anyway !). It’s a well known tune but with some altered Kirby Stone lyrics. You may well have come across it but just in case you haven’t it is well worth a listen.

  80. Terry Webb on 13 January 2026

It was great to hear Steve James play The Hell Raisers by Syd Dale and his musicians on Saturday morning. I used to watch the TV series called, Orlando, with Sam Kydd. That theme tune stuck with me down the years. I’ve got the track on a double CD compilation called, Girl In A Suitcase.

  81. Sandra Poulton on 11 January 2026

This is for Andy Marriot. Please find new material for your 8.30 am comedy spot. Have you heard any of Max Boyce? Dave Allen sketches will go down well.

  82. Barbara Heathcote on 11 January 2026

Listening to Vic Groves for first time. I notice there’s a Country slot. Have you ever played a Josh Turner song? Might be more Country and Western though. Just a thought.

    • Vic Groves on 11 January 2026

Hi Barbara, I love C & W nd trail songs so look forward to finding out about Josh Turner. I’ll find a track to play in the near future. Thanks for listening. Vic

      • Barbara Heathcote on 11 January 2026

Hi Vic. Thank you for your message. He’s very well known, Some songs are bordering on the gospel but more C&W. When I heard “Your Man” wow his voice, so sexy. But probably you won’t think so 🤣.

  83. Paul Anderson on 10 January 2026

Can l just say how much l am enjoying Kevin Taylor’s programme tonight, absolutely superb !!!

  84. Barbara Heathcote on 10 January 2026

Just had a lovely afternoon listening to Stuart Linnel. He played one of my favourite songs from my childhood The Yellow Rose of Texas. Loved Western films from the Saturday Children’s matinee at local cinema. I was only 7. 🤣. And then Cindy played my Vic Damone. Wonderful.

    • Stuart Linnell on 10 January 2026

Thank you Barbara. So pleased you enjoyed it.

      • Barbara Heathcote on 10 January 2026

Hi Stuart . I did enjoy your programme. I think Serenade Radio is the best with a great choice of music.

      • Barbara Heathcote on 10 January 2026

Hi Stuart I did enjoy your programme. I think Serenade Radio is the best with a great choice of music.

  85. Martyn Bassey on 10 January 2026

Three fabulous songs from featured artiste Joan Baez on A Little Night Music. And I always love to hear “Phoenix” by the great Glen Campbell. Many thanks Johnny for another fantastic show 👍😊

    • Johnny Mac, A Little Night Music on 10 January 2026

Thank you, Martyn. And, Glen Campbell is one of our artists of the week next month.

  86. Nancy on 10 January 2026

Cliff Richard was a really cute guy in the the teen magazines when I was a teen in New York back in the day. Never heard his music then. Glad I stuck around long enough to enjoy him now on SR!
A Little Night Music is really bringing it tonight – bravo Johnny Mac! (got the first mystery year!)

    • Johnny Mac, A Little Night Music on 10 January 2026

Thank you, Nancy. And, Cliff is a gentle and kind person too – we need more Cliffs than ever.

  87. Barbara Heathcote on 9 January 2026

Hi Andy. Thank you so much for playing Vic Damone on your programme today . You’re back in my good books. 🤣

  88. Helen on 9 January 2026

I wanted to thank Serenade Radio for the beautiful Country Calendar – January this morning. I adore story telling. This was a joy

  89. Edgar on 8 January 2026

So many great Jim Reeves songs are played on this station, most of which I have never heard on radio stations playing what we in the States call “country music”. I am referring to the stations that don’t play what passes for country music today.

  90. Dianne Evans on 8 January 2026

Wonderful radio station with DJ’s too-thank you for the music!

  91. Lindsay on 7 January 2026

Listening to Serenade Radio this evening and Andy Marriott just played Jimmy Edwards singing “I’ve Never Seen A Straight Banana” as his “Twaddle” at 8.30.
It has reminded me of a funny story.
My mother was not known for having a sense of humour and I recall how often she would tell my father that he was “disgusting” for telling a joke that was even slightly risqué. My first mother-in-law was similarly lacking in a sense of humour and she used to glare at me in the most disapproving fashion when she overheard me exchanging any sort of banter with my father-in-law who was a lovely and very funny man (he once told me that I wasn’t fit to take a blind dog out for a piss – and I loved him for that!)
I recall the occasion back in 1971 when my wedding-day was being planned that my mother and future mother-in-law were discussing “musical entertainment” at the reception, and a pianist was decided upon to play “incidental music”. My mother and m-i-l were wondering what tunes might be played. For some completely unknown reason, which to this day I can still hardly believe, my mother came out with the suggestion, “I’ve Never Seen A Straight Banana”. While I was convulsed and helpless with mirth, m-i-l was looking indignantly down her ample nose, trying her hardest not to laugh.

  92. Karen on 7 January 2026

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to the Frank Chacksfield Hour . Another little gem that would be lost to us without the brilliant Serenade Radio. Thank you

  93. Barbara Heathcote on 7 January 2026

Hi Andy have you fallen out with Vic Damone. Not heard you play him for ages. Tut tut. Also to get back in my good books can you please play The Purple People Eater by Sheb Woolley as your bit of nonsense please. Thank you.

  94. Gerri Hobbs on 7 January 2026

    What a superb radio station!
Engulfs in pure nostaligia and quality!

Many thanks for all your hard work and dedication.

  95. Ian C on 6 January 2026

Thanks to EVERYONE at Serenade for the most marvellous radio station on the air waves. I’ve enclosed a donation to help you kick off 2026 in your inimitable style(s). A Happy and Healthy New Year to all you dedicated, knowledgeable and wonderful presenters ! Great stuff !

  96. Reg Day on 5 January 2026

Thoroughly enjoyed the special Children’s Favourites on Monday. Took me right back and have been singing Hole in the Ground ever since. Roger thas a lot to answer for!!!

    • Roger Williams on 5 January 2026

Thank you Reg! It’s great fun putting that show together, I need lashings of ginger beer to keep me going. More at Easter I expect.

  97. Suzy on 5 January 2026

Ah, yes, who can forget Horace!

  98. Nick Hingley on 4 January 2026

Great edition of Soft Folkus but, regrettably, I must correct Roger on a shocking and fundamental broadcaster’s error when he mentioned the song about the chocolate factory near Bristol.

Anyone who has had the slightest connection with radio broadcasting knows that when referring to the town, the protocol is always as follows: ‘Keynsham – that’s K E Y N S H A M’.

Anyway, that said, I must away to finish my pools coupon. Workington v Bradford Park Avenue looks like a draw to me…

PS Happy and Healthy New Year to all at Serenade and massive thanks for all the fabulous programmes! Keep up the good work!

    • Roger Williams on 5 January 2026

Aaaah Nick! Just when I think I’m getting the hang of this broadcasting lark I get brought down to earth with a bump. I may be good, but I’m no Horace Batchelor…

Thank you for your lovely comments, it’s great being part of the Serenade Radio team

      Roger

  99. Fraser Sutherland on 4 January 2026

Gosh, that was a storming edition of ‘Soft Folkus’.’ Joan Baez, Jez Love, a really welcome Wendy Arrowsmith and a second hour (that flew by way too quickly) with a playlist that held you rapt from beginning to June Tabor ( inclusive!). Well if there was a standout moment maybe it was Ivor Cutler or Reg Meuross ( two really clever songs) or ‘Anan Cara’ by Deborah Rose ( new to me for sure but really striking tbh). Ultimately I’d like to thank you ,Roger, for playing Dolores Keane; I closed my eyes, stared unseeingly at the ceiling and thought to myself nothing, but nothing is so entrancing as the sheer beauty of that kind of human voice and that kind of song. Bravo Dolores. Bravo Roger Williams. Bravo Soft Folkus. Thanks.

    • Roger Williams on 5 January 2026

      Fraser!

What lovely comments. I wanted to kick off the New Year with a show that I thought was a good ‘un. Think I might quit now…. not sure I can top it! I get sent a lot of new material none of it is awful but much of it doesn’t suit Serenade Radio, but just sometimes you hear something that sounds special so I take a risk and get it into the show. Deborah Rose is one such example – I’m really pleased you liked it. The Dolores Keane song is in the library as a result of a listener suggestion – I didn’t know it before, so if you have any suggestions do let me know.

Best wishes and thank you for listening.

      Roger

  100. Dave in London on 4 January 2026

My goodness, Ivor Cutler just now on Soft Folkus.

Ivor: Do a lot of sea people listen to the radio?
Mermaid: Oh, yes. Mostly nature programmes.
    Ivor: How about TV?
Mermaid: We think it’s a bit like sucking your thumb.

I had half a recollection that he was once a guest on Crackerjack but no one agrees with me. To settle it, looking him up just now he isn’t listed as appearing on that exemplary entertainment. But he did appear on six editions of another BBC TV series at that time of day – The Acker Bilk Band Show in the summer of ’62. Thursdays at 5 PM,

The things we do and don’t remember.

Thanks Roger, very good to hear Mr Cutler once more.

    • Roger Williams on 5 January 2026

      Hello Dave

Surely one of the quirkiest artists you will ever hear! I think I first became aware of him through John Peel who championed his work. Crackerjack really missed a trick by not having him next to Eamonn Andrews and Peter Glaze. Thank you for listening

      Roger (and out)
