What happened to the names printed under the photographs on the web page? To new listeners these faces will not mean anything without some form of identity. Love the programmes and the content. I wallow in nostalgia with many of the tunes, remembering where I was and who was there all those years ago.

Re: Mark Steyn presents….’On the Town’ – What with the shortening days, thank God for the antidote of Steyn’s luminescent show. What a marvel of Kristofferson celebration, the strongest Sinatra sextet yet, a Cypriot, North London, Cafe Imperial concatenation of George Michael, Cat Stevens and Michael Bublé ( in some form or other) and two moments of sheer beauty – Eileen Farrell singing ( with Sinatra) the line ‘Lay your head upon my pillow’ in ‘For the Good Times’ and Sinatra’s opening line in ‘Nobody Wins’. Come to think of it, only Mark Steyn, in a radio segue for the ages, could move effortlessly from ‘The Lord’s Prayer’ to booze, broads and The Bible with a little help from ‘Help Me Make it Through the Night’. The show’s a total gem. Thanks Eileen, Frank, Kris and Mark and heck, maybe autumn ain’t so bad.

    • Mark Steyn on 17 October 2024

You’re right, Fraser, that segueing out of “The Lord’s Prayer” into Cole Porter isn’t to be attempted lightly. I don’t think it’s in The Disc-Jockey’s Handbook. But I’m glad you thought it worked. Hope the segues are a little easier this weekend.

  3. andrew henchy on 13 October 2024

Jane Morgan on Steve James Show 13/10/24 Fabulous. More Please. Love Her Voice.

    • Andy Marriott on 13 October 2024

Hi Andrew, I agree entirely. Working on it…

  4. Helen on 13 October 2024

The beautiful Dawn Chorus every weekend, is such a lovely treat. Thankyou Ed.
It’s a chilly Oxfordshire morning, brightened & warmed by your wonderful programme & a cup of tea.

  5. Vanessa-Ann Dowsett on 12 October 2024

What has happened to Mark Steyn on the town programme this evening. Hope all is well

    • Nick Hingley on 12 October 2024

Sounded like a ‘playout’ problem as the programme end announcement followed the introduction announcement. With luck the overnight repeat will be okay.

      • Andy Marriott on 12 October 2024

Yes, we had a technical problem. It was fixed within a couple of minutes and the programme restored.

  6. Martyn Bassey on 12 October 2024

The John Holt song was another family favourite so I remember 1974 very well. Always good to hear Gordon Lightfoot and I love Françoise Hardy. Many thanks Johnny once again 🙂
Penblwydd hapus Nancy o Gaerdydd, Cymru ( Happy birthday Nancy from Cardiff, Wales ) 🎂🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

    • Nancy on 12 October 2024

Many thanks for the Welsh birthday greetings Martyn♥️ I love our Little Night Music community!

      • Johnny Mac on 12 October 2024

And thank you all for your kind comments. Enjoy tomorrow, Nancy.

  7. Karen on 12 October 2024

Another great show Johnny. I was totally rubbish on the mystery year today. Couldn’t admit it till now though as I couldn’t find my glasses to type. 😂! Lovely to hear the wonderful Nana. And birthday greetings to Nancy from the Cotswolds in England.

    • Nancy on 12 October 2024

Thank you Karen♥️ I agree Johnny’s show is great!

  8. Nancy on 12 October 2024

Three of us all missed the last mystery year. Love “Sundown”.
Saw Gordon Lightfoot in concert in 2015 and he was so past his prime that it was heartbreaking. RIP Gordo.

  9. Nancy on 12 October 2024

Thank you and bless you Johnny for the birthday greetings. ♥️

  10. Martyn Bassey on 12 October 2024

Just about got 1977 thanks to the song by Olivia Newton John. Great choice Johnny 😊

  11. Percy Christopher Mpindi on 7 October 2024

Listening in from Kampala Uganda. Great work!

  12. Fraser Sutherland on 6 October 2024

Well, Mark Steyn’s ‘On the Town’ this week exceeded in dense enjoyment all the previous editions, – something I wouldn’t have thought possible. Any show that begins with Rosemary Clooney and pen-penultimately ends with Meg Okura and ‘Riot in Lagos’ does it for me big time. E.M. Forster (‘Only connect’) eat your heart out ( from beyond the grave, I hasten to add) for all the wonderful connections woven throughout the show culminating in Sinatra linked to Tommy Cooper by Joe Parnello. And I haven’t even mentioned ‘Laura’ arranged by a peak Gordon Jenkins. Here’s a low-rent, low-down, totally inconsequential listener connection: this author went to the same school (briefly) as Sade! As Steyn would say: “Oh well”!

    • Lynn Ellard on 6 October 2024

Great show. But I spotted Mark’s deliberate mistake! Linda Eastman had no family connection to the Kodak Eastmans. Her father was Lee Eastman, who among other things was Tommy Dorsey’s showbiz lawyer.

      • Mark Steyn on 6 October 2024

Whoops, Lynn. That’s a pretty basic error on my part. I was labouring under the misapprehension that Linda’s dad was the nephew of the Kodak guy. Can’t remember where I got that from. Maybe a college chum of Lady McCartney’s I met once in Vermont…

We shall issue a correction on Saturday.

        • Lynn Ellard on 7 October 2024

That’s nice Mark. A great show, and i really liked Sinatra’s version of Linda.

    • Nancy on 6 October 2024

I wholeheartedly agree with Fraser Sutherland’s review of Steyn’s ‘On the Town’ show last night. Every Saturday I wonder how Mark can top each musical offering and then he pulls off a show that I did not want to end! I may have to subscribe to his online content so I can re-hear past programs. Mark Steyn, you had me at ‘Hey There’ and every song and story thereafter. You are a treasure!

      • Fraser Sutherland on 7 October 2024

I agree, Nancy, about access to an archive of Mark’s show. I can’t claim to know much about The Great American Songbook or the heyday of American musical theatre but I think ‘On the Town’ is the best and most enjoyable radio programme I’ve ever heard. Mark Steyn introduced me to Sinatra ( Song of the Week). Now I can’t get thru’ the day without listening to ‘September of My Years’!

  13. jon on 5 October 2024

First time I have listened to big band hour, wow great information.

  14. Martyn Bassey on 5 October 2024

Only one year correct tonight. I didn’t do too well. All fabulous songs. Thanks Johnny 🙂

  15. Karen on 5 October 2024

Got the 2nd mystery year because of David Cassidy. My 10 year old self loved David Cassidy! Great selection of tunes as usual Johnny.

  16. Nancy on 5 October 2024

I got to meet David Cassidy’s brother Shaun and the great Milo O’Shea in the 80’s after a performance of Mass Appeal in San Francisco.
All that windup just to say I didn’t get the year…

    • Johnny Mac on 5 October 2024

I love those stories of meeting famous people. Milo O’Shea had such a varied career in TV, radio and the big screen. Who remembers Theatre Of Blood, a real spoof horror movie he starred in with Vincent Price?!

Thank you for all your comments, folks.

      • Nancy on 5 October 2024

Watched the trailer. Fred and Ginger weren’t singing and dancing in it so I’ll pass.😉

  17. Martyn Bassey on 5 October 2024

Great song by The Beach Boys. I was one year out unfortunately.

  18. Nancy on 5 October 2024

Wonderful music as usual Mr. Mac. The mystery year was a head-scratcher. I had never heard the first 2 pieces before but ABBA pulled me through! It’s very interesting learning the music that made the charts in the UK.

  19. Nancy on 2 October 2024

Wisdom and Grenville’s Narcissus is wonderful! Never fails to make me smile!

  20. Alison Brown on 1 October 2024

Serenade radio and all its wonderful presenters so full of interesting knowledge have changed my life completely . I find myself dancing and singing round the house even while doing disliked chores and testing my memory by voicing the names of singers and bands in advance of being pleasantly informed , and feeling so self satisfied when correct ! You have brought back so many wonderful memories for me to relive . Thank you so much .

  21. j on 30 September 2024

Would like to hear more British vocals

  22. Evelyn Weller on 30 September 2024

Really loving the music that has been played lately by David Yarnell and Dick Fisher. I listen to this station for most of the day while I am home. Great commercial free listening. Thank-you! Carry on!

    • David Yarnall on 2 October 2024

Thank you Evelyn for your kind comment and I’m sure my friend of 45 years Dick Fisher will also appreciate your lovely words. We’ve been broadcasting together for a lot if those 45 years so we seem to have got it right at last! 😂

    • Dick Fisher on 2 October 2024

Well Evelyn, proof that practice makes perfect! Thank you for bothering to post a message with such encouraging sentiments!

  23. Gary Merritt on 30 September 2024

Wow, what a find. After recently purchasing an internet radio to hook up to my hi fi system I came across Serenade radio. In the past I used to love listening to shows like Alan Dell’s sounds easy or the David Jacobs collection so this station is perfect for me. I’m still in the process of discovering all the different shows and it’s presenters.
Thank you so much to all involved, keep up the great work.

  24. Geoff Jones on 29 September 2024

Thanks Roger, Barely Works Byker Hill brilliant. Walkawhile still a good track. Ella & Louis’s Summertime so classy. Off to UK next Sunday so will probably miss your programme. Catch you the following week.

    • Roger Williams on 1 October 2024

Hello Geoff, pleased you enjoyed the show. I really enjoyed putting it together – have a safe trip over and bring your thermals!

      Roger

  25. Martyn Bassey on 29 September 2024

Late Night Extra was brilliant as always. Absolutely delighted to hear Ria Bartok. She made many fine pop songs in her short life. Many thanks Mr James for playing one of them on Saturday’s show 👍

  26. Fraser Sutherland on 29 September 2024

Re: Mark Steyn’s ‘On the Town’.
I missed the last six minutes of the show, (listening in the early hours of Sunday morning). That was entirely Mark Steyn’s fault. I laughed so much at the Chet Baker anecdote that it blotted out the rest of the programme. It’s now 0607 hours and I’m still laughing! One might even say ” what a drag”. Yet another aspect to this supreme programme ( minus 6 minutes).

    • Mark Steyn on 2 October 2024

Yeah, but that last six minutes was a real stinker. So you didn’t miss anything, Fraser. Hard to beat that Mussolini anecdote, but I’ll try and dust off a few more in the weeks ahead.

  27. Anthony Parkin on 29 September 2024

Here you have my name😃unlike social media in general. So even Stuart Linnell may not know it’s me.

I was provoked by some things he said on his show. Where he listed artists, composers he had just played.

Also that people ask why are older songs important to remember? Why should they not be? There is room to appreciate all types of music or there should be. It can if handled correctly play alongside newer music.
Any music can be dismissed especially if it is never heard. Many stations today are too similar. Too narrow in what they play.

In many cases hearing the earlier music let’s you hear what influenced artists that followed.

I have and am more likely to try and find older music to add to my own library these days. It’s not easy. You play some of what I have and what I wish I had given the chance.

    • Stuart Linnell on 4 October 2024

Anthony thank you for your message and for taking the time to get in touch. I am delighted that something I said prompted your response and I completely agree. Thank you for listening.

  28. Trevor from Sevenoaks on 28 September 2024

Hello and good evening. Just dropping a line to say how much i am enjoying The Dance Band Days. Just a few years ago i was lucky enough to attend a Concert at Lancaster University in The jack Hylton Room for a Concert given by the expanded Piccadilly Dance Orchestra as The Jack Hylton Orchestra with Jack Hylton Junior as the MC, who was staying in the same hotel as me needless to day i went to bed at 3AM that night. I also recall after a dance band Concert at Cadogan Hall i had a very nice conversation with Joyce Stone, Lew Stones widow. Thank you very much for all that your Station provides in it’s broadcasting. All best wishes

    • Paul Ruddock on 29 September 2024

Thanks for your kind words Trevor. There’ll be a Jack Hylton/Lew Stone dedication coming your way in a future edition of Dance Band Days!

  29. Martyn Bassey on 28 September 2024

Great music as always. Johnny Mathis. Frank Sinatra, Don McLean, Dionne Warwick, the list goes on. As the song says, “Wonderful Wonderful”. Many thanks Johnny Mac

    • Johnny Mac on 28 September 2024

Thank you, Martyn. It’s the way I pick ’em!

  30. Martyn Bassey on 28 September 2024

Helen Reddy, Charlie Rich, and Perry Como. For The Good Times was one of my Mam’s favourites. Three great songs from 1973. Thanks Johnny 👍

  31. Martyn Bassey on 28 September 2024

1978. Hooray! And the wonderful Johnny Mathis. Brilliant 👍😊

  32. Barbara Heathcote on 24 September 2024

Thank you for playing Vic Damone tonight Andy, not sure if you thought Vic’s voice too high or the arrangement but then you played All the things You Are by Shirley Bassey. Have you listened to Vic’s version of that song, absolutely beautiful. Perhaps have a listen when you get the chance.

  33. Geoff Jones on 22 September 2024

Good programme Roger, thanks for the mention. Gordon Lightfoot great. Roy Harper’s Old Cricketer brilliant, one of those tracks like The Parting Glass which need playing occasionally. Ric Sanders and Fairport very good. I’m seeing them at Settle’s Victoria Hall on 16th Oct. Catch you next week.

    • Roger Williams on 28 September 2024

Thank you Geoff. When you see Fairport they won’t disappoint. “Cricketer” is a once a year play, taking my cue from my mentor John Shaw.

Gordon Lightfoot features on this week’s show too. A very special talent. His authorised biography simply called “Lightfoot” is a good read.

      Roger

  34. Andrew Diprose on 22 September 2024

Congratulations Johnny on the 200th edition of Big Band Special. A regular fixture of my Sunday evenings and always a very enjoyable listen. Thank you for all the pleasure you’ve brought over the last four years or so – and continue to bring.

  35. Barry Williams on 22 September 2024

Fascinating show from Mark Steyn tonight, so informative and eye opening about a man that I knew little about, Gus Kahn. Add plenty of Sinatra to the mix and you have the perfect Sunday soundtrack.

    • Mark Steyn on 25 September 2024

Thank you, Barry. Gus Kahn is one of those fellows (like Harry Warren) who isn’t a household name but wrote a lot of household songs.

    • Edgar on 26 September 2024

When am I going to get to hear it?

  36. Helen on 22 September 2024

Thankyou Ed for another weekend of the most beautiful Dawn Chorus programmes. They really are very special. Best wishes.

    • Ed Wellman on 27 September 2024

Thank you, Helen, for your kind words about the Dawn Chorus, it’s so lovely to have our tribe of dawn choristers up and dusting (or not!) at 6am, sneaking a few cups of tea in before the world sees us. Keep that kettle on, and I’ll keep the tunes on 🙂

  37. Christianne Allen on 21 September 2024

Thank you so very much for your wonderful station!! I listen to Serenade Radio just about exclusively and adore the hosts and music. You raise my spirit!!!

  38. Fraser Sutherland on 21 September 2024

Steyn’s ‘On the Town’: if you could devise the perfect radio programme then nothing would beat 60 minutes of Jule Styne intertwined with peak Sinatra all inimitably presented by Mark Steyn. Plus Harry Lauder, Susan Birkenhead ( spelling?) anecdotes and, to complete the joy, Willie Nelson ! Just great. Roll on next Saturday!

    • Mark Steyn on 25 September 2024

Thank you, Fraser. I believe Serenade is the only station with a Harry Lauder-Willie Nelson format. We only went ahead with it after extensive market research and focus-grouping. As you say: roll on next Saturday!

  39. Philip on 21 September 2024

I’ve just tuned in and was pleasantly surprised to hear a vintage Big Band show presented by Benny Green. If you are doing such things, I would love to hear the Sunday afternoon programme he did that largely featured the Great American Songbook.
Thanks for the great work you are doing. I especially like Mark Steyn.

  40. Martyn Bassey on 21 September 2024

Fantastic show as always Johnny. Many thanks 👍😊

  41. Chiaki Ishikawa on 21 September 2024

Thank you for playing the songs of Helen Reddy. I have been an ardent fan of her.
    Listening from Japan.
The program is handy for the slow Saturday morning and lunch time 😉
It would be great if you can play ”Somewhere in the Night” of Helen, too.

I have enjoyed the other old songs from my youth. Thank you.
    Have a nice day.

I learned the program from Helen Reddy Official Fan Club page on FB.

    • Johnny Mac on 21 September 2024

Thank you for listening, Chiaki – and welcome to the world of Serenade Radio.

  42. Karen on 21 September 2024

Thankyou for mentioning the brilliant herbie flowers, who I have seen on many occasions performing in Jeff Wayne’s the war of the worlds band. It doesn’t seem the same without him. 2 out of 3 mystery years ain’t bad. Oh and now it’s autumn leaves….one of my favourites of all time. Definitely worth staying awake for as usual .

  43. Jim Keaton on 21 September 2024

Martyn, I love hearing Helen so much! She was a wonderful person in addition to being a superb singer.

    • Martyn Bassey on 21 September 2024

That’s very nice to hear about Helen Reddy. Many thanks Jim 👍

  44. Jim Keaton on 21 September 2024

Thank you, Johnny Mac for featuring Helen Reddy as the artist of the week (September 21, 2024). So thrilled to hear her! We certainly appreciate Helen and you at the Helen Reddy Official Facebook page. We have people tuning in tonight from all over!

    • Johnny Mac on 21 September 2024

Thank you so much, Jim. Helen was a unique and wonderful artist. I know she is very much loved by the Serenade Radio regulars, as you can see here!

  45. Nancy on 21 September 2024

Thank you kindly for the second helping of Art Garfunkel…with Paul Simon.

    • Johnny Mac on 28 September 2024

And Paul Simon will be my artist of the week on A Little Night Music in mid October.

      • Nancy on 28 September 2024

I share my birthday with him – and Nana Mouskouri, Sammy Hagar, Marie Osmond, Lenny Bruce, Margaret Thatcher…

        • Johnny Mac on 28 September 2024

Ah! Well, Nana is 90 that day, so is my artist of the week on Saturday 12 October….

  46. Nick Hingley on 20 September 2024

Kevin Taylor: Great to hear last Sunday’s programme play out with Dionne Warwick and hear ‘Paper Mache’ once more. I mentioned previously the song getting a lot of airplay on Radio Luxembourg in 1970 so it must have had a single release. As far as I can tell, the album ‘I’ll never fall in Love Again’, from which ‘Paper Mache’ came, was not released in the UK, though there are some German pressings about. However, thanks to a certain internet sales site, I am now the proud possessor of a US pressing which I am able to enjoy on my vintage hi-fi set-up!
PS I am working on a swing set!

  47. Nick Hingley on 20 September 2024

I must thank Roger Williams for a while back mentioning on Soft Folkus ‘Beware of the Bull’ and which brought this excellent biography of Jake Thackray to my attention. I am now a fair way into it and enjoying it immensely. I remember Jake from the Bernard Braden TV spot days and some years later was fortunate to see him perform a few times when he had been embraced by the folk club circuit. I can remember literally laughing until I cried; ‘On Again’ being the particular cause of this extreme reaction. This was enhanced by Jake’s deadpan delivery, though I do remember him cracking the occasional momentary grin before regaining his composure. ‘On Again’ features my all-time favourite opening lines but whether it dare have an airing on Serenade Radio…
On the subject of songs with ‘dodgy’ lyrics – thinking the reference to ‘Money for Nothing’ played last week – I would say that the Serenade Radio audience is one that is grown-up and understands context and also recognises that some things are of their time. And then again, Serenade is a station not afraid to play ‘Wives and Lovers’ which I’m sure would never get an airing on the BBC these days – assuming they hadn’t already banned most of the genres of music heard on Serenade!

  48. David Small on 19 September 2024

Lovely to hear Harry King presenting Make Way for Music about the Northern Dance Orchestra what a lovely programme and I am so looking forward to programme 2 tonight and Programme 3 next Thursday

  49. Nancy on 18 September 2024

JD Souther died today. One of the great songwriters of my generation. Linda Ronstadt, the Eagles, James Taylor, and Bonnie Raitt were artists who recorded his music. His music certainly qualifies as easy listening. RIP JD.

  50. Helen on 18 September 2024

A beautiful selection of special music on SR today, as always.

  51. Fraser Sutherland on 18 September 2024

Every so often on SR a track stops you in your tracks; even more unexpectedly if it is an instrumental version of a well known song. Eric Winstone and His Orchestra’s rendering of ‘Help Me Make It Through The Night’ ( 0647 hours, ‘Morning Music’), I thought, was successful and captured some of the essence of that great and lovely song. So thanks a lot Morning Music!

  52. Geoff Jones on 15 September 2024

Another good programme Roger. The Sandy Denny track is one of her best and great to finish the show on. Swimming song – a good version from Maddie but the McGarrigles had a great version too. Louden of course was married to Kate – that helped! Catch you next week.

    • Roger Williams on 16 September 2024

Thanks Geoff, always good to hear from you. I’ve been pondering getting some Loudun Wainwright into the Serenade library. Roger

  53. Karen on 15 September 2024

Thank you Mark Steyn for the Song of the week about autumn leaves. Fascinating to hear about the origins of the song ,which since I have been listening to Serenade Radio has become one of my absolute favourites . Great show as always .

    • Mark Steyn on 16 September 2024

Thank you, Karen. No other song quite like it – although we jumped the gun a little so I hope we haven’t jinxed this last week of summer.

    • Fraser Sutherland on 18 September 2024

Agreed Karen. The first programme I ever heard on SR was Steyn’s ‘Song of the Week’ on ‘Autumn Leaves’ although, since then, that song has been superseded in my affections by ‘September of My Years’ by Sinatra, As you say, thanks Mark Steyn.

  54. Barry Williams on 14 September 2024

Brilliant Dance band Days tonight once again, thanks Roger . Music from well before my time but so melodic and uplifting, keep ’em coming

    • Paul Ruddock on 14 September 2024

      Hello Barry

Thank you so much for your kind comments and it’s lovely to know you’re enjoying Dance Band Days, especially as I’ve only recently taken on the responsibility of producing the show for Roger.

If you’ve any suggestions for music you’d like to hear in future shows do let us know via the ‘Contact Us’ section of the website and we’ll do our best to track them down.

      Best wishes

      Paul

      • Barry Williams on 15 September 2024

        Thanks Paul, will do

      • Anthony Parkin on 15 September 2024

Not a good start I forgot to add my name and e-mail address.
Wishing you, Roger, Andy and everyone at Serenade continued success. You play the music that I struggle to collect. Is difficult to find. My finances are limited which doesn’t help.

You play what I have or wish that I did. Even though I have a library of approx 6,000 CD’s. I like having them but often I just look at them🤣

I still like some new music but not much of it. You also prove that you can play many different types next to each other and it works.

    • Roger Williams on 15 September 2024

Thanks Barry, I learn a lot from presenting Dance Band Days – the kind of music my Mum loved and which I have now come to appreciate. Couldn’t do it without Producer Paul!

  55. Martyn Bassey on 14 September 2024

Getting closer. Only one year out this time. Classic song by Matt Monro 👍

  56. Martyn Bassey on 14 September 2024

Hi Johnny. No luck on first mini year. I went for 1978. Must do better 😊

  57. Edgar on 13 September 2024

Gordon Jenkins is one of the greats. Now I know who he is.

  58. Ian on 11 September 2024

A fabulous hour of Morning Music today. A mixture of stirring, melodic and nostalgic tunes interspersed by the dulcet tones of Peter Tomlinson. Pure radio heaven ! And then….the Wednesday wellbeing of Andy M with the intro of Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme and more than a sprinkling of “Stardust” (if you forgive the pun) , J. Wilbur and Orchestra et al. Great Stuff, Serenade !

    • Anthony Parkin on 15 September 2024

Music over much of what is on TV especially the news. I try to tune in to Morning Music daily. Honestly it’s not difficult. I tend to be awake most mornings at 4am. If I am not listening overnight. And with Autumn and Winter almost here. It’s going to be a valued friend and companion. As long as Serenade is there and I can afford access to Internet.

  59. Barbara Heathcote on 10 September 2024

Hi Andy, love Serenade Radio, you’ve made my night, Andy Williams, Tony Martin and of course Vic Damone, wonderful.

  60. jon on 9 September 2024

Still listening from the far side of the world in the Philippines.

  61. Ali on 9 September 2024

I think I’ve finally found the best radio station for me – thankyou. Have been listening to B**m for the last couple of years but recently the adverts – especially the health ones are so frequent I had to turn it off. I googled and found Serenade Radio so am delighted – thanks again

    • Cindy Kent on 16 September 2024

Thanks Ali. Glad you’ve found us and like us! Please help us spread the word!

  62. Ray & Iana on 8 September 2024

Hi Thank you for playing John Denver loved hearing this again, have listened to Serenade Radio all day it is so refreshing to hear good music again, Thank you soooo much.

    • Roger Williams on 8 September 2024

      Hello Ray & Iana

Thank you for your kind comments. I’m pleased you enjoy what we do on Serenade. John Denver is such a good songwriter and performer isn’t he?

  63. Geoff Jones on 8 September 2024

Thanks Roger for tonights programme. Eva’s Fields of Gold brilliant. Maddy’s version of Lark in the morning the best. Catch you next week.

Thank you Geoff. Pleased you enjoyed it. Greetings from Kingsand in Cornwall.

  64. Chris Gidney on 8 September 2024

Wonderful to hear The George Mitchell ‘Singers’ this week. A musical bio of Geroge would make a great Prog? His daughter wrote the biography. Musically fascinating.

    • Cindy Kent on 16 September 2024

      Great idea!

  65. Martyn Bassey on 7 September 2024

Great Cindy Kent show today. Many thanks for playing People Get Ready by The Impressions. Tremendous song 🙂

    • Cindy Kent on 16 September 2024

You’re very welcome! Glad you enjoyed the show. Do help us spread the word about this great station

  66. Robert chapman on 7 September 2024

    Hi Jeff Owen
Just to let you know great show playing a great mix today

    • Jeff Owen on 14 September 2024

Hello Robert. Glad you’re enjoying it all & thanks for listening!

  67. Karen on 7 September 2024

Thank you Steve for playing Scarborough fair by Glen Campbell and Bobbie Gentry. Such a beautiful version.

    • Steve James on 7 September 2024

Thanks Karen, yes it’s lovely isn’t it? Glen and Bobbie recorded some great tracks together.

  68. Barry Williams on 6 September 2024

Hello everyone at Serenade. I have an aunt who loves real music but unfortunately didn’t have access to the Internet.
My brother and I have organised a package for her so that she can now listen to Serenade all day long, she is absolutely thrilled that she can now listen to the music she (And I ! )love.

    • Andy Marriott on 9 September 2024

What a nice thing to do. Thank You.

  69. David Small on 6 September 2024

Morning Andy you have totaly spoilt us this week just loving the Jonathan and Darlene tracks that you have played for us yesterday and this morning in your twaddle section it really was great to hear them — more please infact how about a Jonathan and Darlene spot each morning –just suggesting .

  70. Fraser Sutherland on 5 September 2024

Thanks, Andy Marriott, for including ‘The Scottish Soldier’ ( sung by David Whitfield) in your show. I used to sing this song with my father in the mid-Sixties driving through the desperately lonely glens of Ross and of Sutherland – then all single track roads, ragged specks of wool on heather and scudding lochside waves. The power of song to evoke. Wonderful and thanks again – for the song, the show and the stroke of genius which is Serenade Radio

  71. Barbara Heathcote on 5 September 2024

Hi Andy just listening to Jonathan and Arlene Edwards The A Train, I wonder is it just me or can anyone else hear Baby’s sister Lisa singing in Dirty Dancing 🤣

  72. Karen on 5 September 2024

I found this station by accident a few weeks back and have it on 24 hours also for the the dog as she likes music it’s nice to hear songs I have never heard of and songs they don’t play on popular music stations – I like the morning show because it’s very funny about the comments – keep the good work going and thankyou .

  73. Steve Dunnings on 5 September 2024

Just a quick note to say how much I enjoy Serenade Radio and love MORNING MUSIC. I have Serenade playing most of the day on my smart speaker. It would be great to have it on DAB as well though especially when driving.

    • Dick Fisher on 5 September 2024

      Hi Steve
Have you tried using the SR app on your ‘phone?
Once installed, you might be able to connect it via Bluetooth to your in-car system. Then you can have Serenade with you wherever you go! The app is free from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

      • Nancy on 5 September 2024

I use an audio cable run between my phone and my car’s audio. Works great and I always have the music I want to hear.

  74. Brian Bunn on 3 September 2024

Hi Andy, Yes I agree, Edna Savage has a very nice voice. You mentioned you wondered what she looks like, there’s actually a photo of her on the Serenade Home Page !

    • Martyn Bassey on 3 September 2024

Same here. I very much enjoy hearing Edna Savage on Serenade. She had a lovely voice.

  75. Andy Grahamme on 2 September 2024

Andy Marriott is a hugely talented broadcaster…he makes it sound so ridiculously easy. Shades of Tel and Ray…and of course fantastic tunes.

    • Ian Patterson on 2 September 2024

Andy is perfect for how I feel first thing in the morning- a fine broadcaster, maybe the last of the greats.

  76. Dick Fisher on 2 September 2024

Hi Nick, I have searched for a Guinness ad with guys riding tandem. There is a reference to guys setting a Guinness World Record using a tandem, but no ads! Thanks for sharing the memories of the early days at Beacon – the best radio station to ever have me – until Serenade! I too recall in my early forays into broadcasting the liberal use of “soundtrack” material. When I was at the BBC, I was told that we were supposed to play the material from tape, but no-one ever did! Munro Jack is still around but not broadcasting regularly as far as I know. Enjoy the wine. One of life’s most enduring pleasures – in moderation!

    • Nick Hingley on 5 September 2024

Hi Dick, my memory will be playing a few tricks. TV ads used to fascinate me when I was a kid. These days they annoy me: view a recording so that the twenty minutes per hour can be FF’d! – always assuming I can find something I want to watch… Great to hear your tones again. Beacon was a fab station in those early years and the signal went a good way. I could hear it well when I was in Stoke-on-Trent. I actually remember you presenting a programme from the Beacon ‘OB’ wagon at the NEC when I had gone to some sort of exhibition there (Ideal Home?) with my folks – it must have been a Sunday. Anyway, all things very much in moderation here – except for very liberal amounts of Serenade Radio! Keep up the good work.

  77. Nick Hingley on 1 September 2024

Dick Fisher – Last week you played an instrumental that you think was made for a Guinness ad. My ears pricked up. I have heard it once before on Serenade but before that not in decades. So familiar, yet I can’t remember the product but I have a misty vision of some chaps riding an elongated tandem in one of the shots. TV ads in those days were mini-epics. Of course over a period of sixty years my mind might be playing tricks or is completely bamboozled – a not infrequent occurrence.

Good to hear two songs from High Society in the same show. I did indeed sing along to Who Wants To Be a Millionaire taking both parts (it’s more difficult with Did You Ever). I love the way Celeste Holm delivers: A liveried chauffeur, do I want? No sir!

I gained my appreciation of Sinatra at relatively early age listening to a late-evening Sunday show on Beacon Radio when a numerous performances from films were played. I remember the programmes being presented by Munro Jack but early on it may have been Roger DeFreitas. Many years later I discovered that movie soundtracks were exempt from needle-time allocation and thus one of the techniques used by Beacon to circumvent the restrictions and play more music. (This for a long time one of those things I didn’t know I didn’t know.)

Anyway, enjoying a glass of wine as I write this. My climbing roses are now looking a bit sad but there are still some blooms on the ones next door… 😉

  78. Karen on 1 September 2024

Another lovely show today from Vic Groves. Sitting in the sun relaxing and listening what could be nicer.
You often ask Vic if we have any suggestions for the country slot and it would be lovely to hear “Setting the Woods on Fire’ by Hank Williams. He was one of my Dad’s favourites and that particular song brings back lots of happy memories. Thank you for a great show.

    • Vic Groves on 1 September 2024

      Hi Karen,
Thanks for the kind comments. Always happy to play Hank Williams. Listen out for “Setting The Woods On Fire”. There’s no sun here unfortunately. Can you spare a little bit? Vic

      • Anthony Parkin on 2 September 2024

Vic. I am listening overnight because I can 🙂
Your pronunciation of Andre Kostelanetz is so close I would not worry. Excellent try if that was a first attempt. You took a run at it and succeeded.😂

        • Vic Groves on 2 September 2024

          Hello Anthony.
Thanks for listening and your comments re my pronunciation of Mr. Kostelanetz. You are very kind! It’s good to know that we have an overnight listenership. Kind regards, Vic

  79. Barry on 1 September 2024

Brilliant Dance Band Days once again tonight, great to hear those wonderful tunes and songs that you won’t hear anywhere else.
    Serenade is incomparable

    • Roger Williams on 1 September 2024

Thank you Barry, a joy to put together and producer Paul Ruddock makes it so easy for me.

      • Barry Williams on 1 September 2024

Thanks to you and Mr Ruddock, keep up the great work, a joy to listen to.

  80. Nancy on 1 September 2024

Mark Steyn, from Rose Marie to My Wild Irish Rose – I always underwear the hour goes. Well done sir, well done.

    • Mark Steyn on 2 September 2024

Thank you, Nancy. That sounds like one vote for our non-stop all-underwear songs. I’ll have to get working on it.

      • Nancy on 2 September 2024

I dunno Mark – I did a web search and after Hard Hearted Hannah and Gitarzan there’s quite a few, uh, questionable lyrics using BVDs. But if anyone can do it my money’s on you.

  81. Johnny Mac on 31 August 2024

Well done, Martyn. Thanks again for tuning into A Little Night Music. See you all next month (week!)

    • Martyn Bassey on 31 August 2024

Thanks Johnny. Great show. See You In September. Isn’t that a song title? 😃

  82. Matthew on 29 August 2024

Chris Helme’s Bandstand on a Friday night is a real treat. He presents a type of music we don’t hear enough of in an extremely knowledgeable and approachable style. This is a wonderful station and always a great listen.

    • Brian Bunn on 31 August 2024

Thoroughly agree 👍 “Bandstand” is fantastic, along with “Music while you work”. Love the instrumentals !

  83. Phil on 27 August 2024

    Hey Simon
I missed Frank Chacksfield on Music Box today. Can you play him again, but a bit louder. Cheers.

    • Simon McLean on 27 August 2024

Hello – I’m not sure what happened with Frank, it sounded fine at my end but it looks like something may have gone awry between leaving Music Box HQ and arriving on your wireless set! I will make some enquiries…

      • Andy Marriott on 28 August 2024

        Hi Phil, and Simon.
I’ve looked into this. It seems that particular track was faulty. Technical bit: The right channel was phase-inverted! Meaning that it sounds OK at our end in stereo but when played through a mono speaker, which combines the left and right channels, they cancel each other out resulting in almost silence! I have repaired it, next time Frank will sound magnificent.

  84. David Small on 27 August 2024

A Centenary Celebration – The Three Luminaries. Bank Holiday Special – What a lovely programme and so well presented by Andre Leon it brought back so many lovely memories of the music on the radio as we remember it . Well done –More Please Thank you

    • Brian Reynolds on 27 August 2024

The Centenary Celebration was a splendid production. Andre Leon (Presenter) and Tony Clayden (Producer) are two of the most knowledgeable light music experts in the country. I grew up with these wonderful tunes back in the 1950s when the airwaves were awash with superb light music such as the compositions featured. Apart from Serenade Radio, lovers of this genre are starved of their favourite music. Hopefully the station will provide us with more programmes in this vein.

  85. Anthony Parkin on 26 August 2024

A Centenary Celebration – The Three Luminaries. Bank Holiday Special.

So many memories and moods revisited. Feeling a little
    melancholic. Masses of Nostalgia.

    Thank you.

  86. John Temple on 25 August 2024

Thank you to Peter Tomlinson for playing two tracks by Anne Shelton on his lovely show this afternoon. Great to hear Anne’s wonderful voice on the radio!

  87. Martyn Bassey on 25 August 2024

Great hour of music on Late Night Extra. Many thanks for the mention and for playing a song by Zouzou. Always like to hear Billie Davis, Françoise Hardy, and Nirvana. Very good version of The Bee Gees “Storm” by The Family Dogg.
Many thanks once again for an excellent programme Mr James 👍

  88. Barry Williams on 24 August 2024

What an absolute pleasure to hear Ken Dodd on Serenade this week. He had a wonderful voice and was a great comedian a very talented entertainer. Thank you Serenade

  89. Martyn Bassey on 24 August 2024

Gee whizz! Didn’t have a clue with that year. I knew it was the 1950’s but that was all. Great songs though, especially Jo Stafford 🙂

  90. Nancy on 24 August 2024

3 years off on mini mystery year. *sigh*
Nice to see everyone tonight. See you next week!

    • Martyn Bassey on 24 August 2024

Hopefully do better next Saturday. Have a good week 👍🙂

  91. Nancy on 24 August 2024

‘Someone to Watch Over Me’ is one of my very favorite songs. Willie’s rendition is one of the best,

  92. Martyn Bassey on 24 August 2024

One year out. I was sure it was 1976. Oh well, can’t win them all! Fab music again Johnny 👍

    • Karen on 24 August 2024

Very poor on the mystery year this morning…I was certain the last one was 76. One year out yet again. ! Happy anniversary Johnny…. I have drunk a river of coffee to stay awake tonight.!

      • Johnny Mac on 24 August 2024

Good on ya, Karen. Mine’s a decaf. You’re all troopers, of the super kind!

    • Nancy on 24 August 2024

Me too Martyn, and I was going solely on Paul Simon (never heard the first two before). Oh well indeed…
Once more into the breach! Terrific variety of music, once again!

  93. Martyn Bassey on 24 August 2024

I didn’t have a clue on the year until I heard the Carpenters. Took a guess on 1975 😊.
Enjoyed Sean Usher’s show very much.
Great to hear Misty by Johnny Mathis, and A Blossom Fell by Nat King Cole👍

  94. Nancy on 24 August 2024

Hmph, off by one year on the mini mystery year. Would’ve sworn it was ’74. Shirley Bassey must have shaken my memory box.
    Happy second anniversary Mr. Mac!

    • Johnny Mac on 24 August 2024

Thank you, Nancy. I’m now one of the ‘terrible twos’! Always lovely to hear you’re listening in, across the pond.

  95. Carole Jenks on 24 August 2024

After several days not being able to receive your radio station on my Google nest in Australia, it has suddenly returned. Thank goodness as I just love your music and all the announcers. Let’s hope I don’t lose it again.

  96. Armando Loni on 23 August 2024

    Music Box

One of the best progs on Serenade Radio!! Look forward to it every week day……

    • Simon McLean on 23 August 2024

Thank you, Armando – wonderful to hear you’re enjoying it!

  97. Carole Jenks on 22 August 2024

Thanks Andy for your prompt reply. What a nuisance – let’s hope the powers that be get it fixed promptly. I have now put your app on my iPhone so all is not lost.

  98. Carole Jenks on 22 August 2024

I have loved listening to your station in Australia on my Google nest appliance but suddenly I cannot receive it. The lass answers with Serenade Radio as usual then a guy says welcome to tune-in as per usual and then nothing. Can’t understand why – any particular reason?

    • Andy Marriott on 22 August 2024

      Hi Carol,
Sorry you are having problems hearing us. It looks like a Google/Tune-in problem, several other Google users have reported the problem and it is affecting other stations not just SR. I’m afraid there’s nothing we can do, it’s a case of waiting for them to fix it.
I tried to report it but just got the usual corporate runaround!
All I can suggest is to use a different device; PC, phone, Alexa, Sonos etc.

  99. Mark Jones on 21 August 2024

I can’t thank you enough for such a glorious, and professional, radio service. I really thought I was doomed to constantly skip channels trying to find something I like, now I just leave it on Serenade.

  100. Armando Loni on 21 August 2024

    Album of the Week:
What an amazing singer Ken Dodd was…. Just listening to him now, he reminds me of Matt Monro. A very talented man 👍🏻

  101. Mr David Phillips on 21 August 2024

    Hi Simon,
It’s terrific to catch up on programmes on SR, I’ve just been listening to your Tuesday 12-1 show at Wednesday morning some 12 hours later what a great choice of instrumental music.
Thanks Simon and SR please do keep this type of music and the truly great arrangements of songs etc.
    Dave sunny Donny 😎👏👍

    • Simon McLean on 22 August 2024

Thank you, Dave – so lovely to hear you’re still enjoying the show!
