I don’t have lie-ins anymore at the weekend. I wake up early for Ed and Steve, the amazing unsung heroes that play music you’ll never hear anywhere else. Thanks guys x

    • Fraser Sutherland on 13 July 2024

Same here Jay! Sometimes I catch the beginning of the great Stuart Linnell, get hooked. Before I know it, it’s time for Cindy Kent, which I just love, then the re-run of ‘On the Town’or ‘Steyn At First Light’! Trouble is daylight Sunday is a washout but it’s a small price to pay for beauty!

      • cindy Kent on 19 July 2024

Thank you – I aim to please!!!!

  2. andrew henchy on 13 July 2024

Love the Station. Please include Jane Morgan on your Playlists.

  3. Martyn Bassey on 12 July 2024

I haven’t listened to much brass band music, but I have enjoyed the two Bandstand shows very much. Many thanks Mr Helme.

    • Cindy Kent on 19 July 2024

thank you – it was my pleasure!! So glad you enjoyed it

  4. Karen on 11 July 2024

Great to hear march of the mods Dick. A favourite at all family parties when i was growing up. If i tried the dance now I’d probably be in danger of a heart attack!

    • dick fisher on 11 July 2024

You and me both Karen! I do enjoy reliving the memories that these fabulous tunes revive!
      Lovely to hear from you.

  5. Nancy on 10 July 2024

Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer is one of my favorite seasonal songs! As it’s 92 degrees F (and rising!) here in Montana I’m remembering the beachy, ice-creamy days of my childhood. Thanks Andy!

  6. Barbara Heathcote on 9 July 2024

Hi Andy can I add to your bit of nonsense list, Frankfurter Sausages please by the Streamliners.

  7. Nancy on 8 July 2024

If A Grey-Haired Lady Says “How’s Your Father?” has kept me smiling all day! Love your show Mr. Williams.

    • Roger Williams on 9 July 2024

It made me smile too! Really pleased you enjoyed it Nancy.

  8. peter paul mangan on 8 July 2024

Thank you for playing Waltzing Matilda by the late Frank Ifield tonight Dick,it was wonderful to hear it again on the great Serenade Radio.

    • Dick Fisher on 9 July 2024

Ah yes! The one with the great brass arrangement. My pleasure Peter. I wonder, did Frank, even momentarily, object to the idea of recording the song? I like to think that it was the swinging treatment that persuaded him!

  9. Edgar on 8 July 2024

“Stars and Stipes Forever” was nice but four days late.

  10. Andy Grahamme on 8 July 2024

As I’ve intimated on many occasions…this is what Radio 2 should have morphed into. However…now…who cares? Serenade Radio is by far and away the most delightful radio station you could imagine. The music..presentation…just first class…and no ads..news..traffic..travel! Seems too good to be true!

  11. Jackie on 8 July 2024

Joined the Mark Steyn Club and started with Mark’s show but now I am addicted! Wonderful programming. Well done to all!

  12. Geoff Jones on 7 July 2024

Thanks Roger another very good programme. Nancy and Lee performed well together. Great to hear Slip Jigs and Reels again. Fairport do a good version. I’m sure in the mid 80s I was at Bedford folk club and Steve Turner did a version with his concertina. Cara and A parting glass and June Tabor class acts. With Sandy finishing you can’t get better.

    • Roger Williams on 10 July 2024

Hello Geoff, Thank you for your kind comments. Steve Turner! Haven’t heard that name in a while.

I’m gradually building up the folk element in the Serenade Library. In the first few months I had to draw on what was already there and that meant a lot of Val Doonican and Roger Whittaker. Don’t get me wrong, they will still feature but it’s lovely to be able to introduce new material. And, of course, there will always be room for June Tabor and Sandy Denny. How’s your local folk club these days?

      Regards to Pam

      Roger

  13. Ian on 7 July 2024

Steve James compiles such an excellent standard of programme each weekend. I always enjoy the Breakfast offerings and LNE is unique. I think that I missed the attribution of the orchestral version of “Mr Tambourine Man” this morning. Was it the “Gentle Strings Orchestra” or did I mis-hear ? Nonetheless, a fine rendition ! Anyway, nice to hear Cilla (Black) followed by Paul Jones “I’ve been a Bad Bad Boy”. Great reminiscences of great times. Superb programming throughout. Thank you Steve !

    • Dave (some of the time sunny Donny)😎 on 7 July 2024

Steve James Sat/Sun shows always a great favourite of mine, may it please continue to give listeners to SR sheer enjoyment.
      Thanks Steve

    • Steve James on 8 July 2024

Hello Ian, it was in fact ‘The Golden Gate Strings’ plucking merrily away on that version of Mr Tambourine Man. I’m not sure Bob Dylan would have approved, but it’s very jolly. Apparently Keith Skues used it as his theme tune many years ago. Thank you (and Dave below) for the very kind comments.

  14. Karen on 7 July 2024

It was lovely to hear Radio Heroes again. Since i heard it last time my mum brought me down record that was my dad’s of Nat King Cole with Alan Dell speaking between each track and its lovely. So it was more special for me to hear about him this time round .

    • Martyn Bassey on 7 July 2024

My parents had that album as well back in the 60’s. I always remember waiting for Ramblin Rose to come on as it was my favourite. I was thinking of the album when listening to Radio Heroes yesterday.🙂

      • Karen on 7 July 2024

Martyn – My favourite was ( still is) let there be love … With that lovely piano playing by George Shearing at the beginning as well as the great vocals

  15. Helen on 7 July 2024

Thankyou Ed for the lovely mention on the Dawn Chorus today. It was a wonderful surprise and very special.
Beautiful music as always, and hearing one of my favourites, English Country Garden, made my Sunday morning bright and beautiful.

    • Suzy on 7 July 2024

I waited on the bus stop for an hour, Ed, to show you A Summer Place I know …. but it poured with rain so I went back home. 😂 [You are so funny and make my weekend early mornings.]

  16. Barbara Heathcote on 6 July 2024

Hi Andy I did send an email with a selection of theme tunes a few days ago. Can I add Foyles War as well please.

  17. Martyn Bassey on 6 July 2024

How nice to hear Geoff Love talking on Mark Steyns On The Town. My mother loved Rodrigo’s Guitar Concerto back in 1976. Many thanks Mr Steyn 👍

    • Mark Steyn on 11 July 2024

Geoff was a lovely guy, Martyn, and a phenomenal talent. Your mother was not wrong re the Rodrigo. One of the things I love about Serenade is that it revives not just long-ago stuff that you and I like, but that it reminds us of the music our parents loved. It’s a kind of double nostalgia in that respect.

      • Martyn Bassey on 11 July 2024

Very true. My parents were great fans of Nat Cole, Sinatra, Mathis and others. Serenade brings it all back to me. Many thanks for your reply.

  18. David Small on 6 July 2024

Radio Heroes lovely to hear it second time around Peter Tomlinson a great programme and looking forward to the rest of the series again. A big thank you to both you Peter and Neil Anthony.

  19. Terry on 6 July 2024

Just listened to Alan Dell’s Radio heroes, marvellous. He was my favourite radio presenter. Thank you so much for sharing.

    • Neil Anthony on 15 July 2024

Glad you enjoyed the programme on Alan, Terry. He genuinely was a great broadcaster and certainly one of my Radio Heroes. Hope you agreed we did him justice.

  20. Helen on 6 July 2024

Weekends would not be the same without Ed’s Dawn Chorus.
    Akways incredibly Beautiful.
    Thankyou Ed.

  21. Martyn Bassey on 6 July 2024

Thanks for the three songs by Françoise Hardy. Brilliant show. Many thanks Johnny 👍

    • Johnny Mac on 7 July 2024

Thank you, Martyn. I love the ‘ye-ye’ singers.

      • Martyn Bassey on 7 July 2024

I like the French girl singers of the 60’s and 70’s, such as France Gall and Sylvie Vartan to name just two. Bravo Johnny 😊

        • Fraser Sutherland on 8 July 2024

Don’t forget the Franco-German chanteuse Patricia Kaas!

          • Fraser Sutherland on 12 July 2024

Mid to late 80s so later than peak Vartan. I used to play both on car cassette player during regular weekly trips across the mountains north of Nice – so your note re Vartan caused a wave of nostalgia in me!

      • Martyn Bassey on 8 July 2024

Can’t say I’ve heard of Patricia Kaas. Perhaps she’s a bit too modern for me 😄

        • Fraser Sutherland on 12 July 2024

Mid to late 80s so later than peak Vartan. I used to play both on car cassette player during regular weekly trips across the mountains north of Nice – so your note re Vartan caused a wave of nostalgia in me!

  22. Eileen on 6 July 2024

Just learned of serenade-radio.com last evening. Certainly happy to have made the acquaintance. Looking forward to many great hours of listening here in southwest Florida or at our northern home in Ohio. Continue to spread joy. PS-I missed the mystery year by just one year.

    • Montana on 6 July 2024

I discovered SR during the unfortunate shut down time. I would throw Oasis Parties for friends and play Serenade Radio in the background as we enjoyed dinner and drinks. No negative conversation allowed. Just love the vibe here.

    • Johnny Mac on 6 July 2024

      Welcome on board, Eileen!

  23. Montana on 6 July 2024

Ah well now I blew the mystery year. Michael Nesmith is great, will you sometime play “Joanne”, Johnny Mac?

    • Johnny Mac on 7 July 2024

Hey Montana 😉 Michael was the George Harrison of the Monkees. Thank you for the recommendation. And talk to you next Saturday at ‘the best time of day’ on A Little Night Music.

  24. Martyn Bassey on 6 July 2024

Hi Johnny. Classic song by the great Glen Campbell 👍😊

  25. Karen on 5 July 2024

I am thoroughly enjoying the new program Banstand. I never realised brass band music was so diverse. Great stuff. Thank you.

    • Chris Helme on 5 July 2024

Thankyou Karen – I am pleased to see you enjoyed my new show – the show is always open to requests and questions about the world of brass bands.

  26. Brian Bunn on 5 July 2024

Was disappointed when Friday evening “Evergreen” finished, but “Bandstand” is even better 😊 Thank you ! Please keep it going, lovely programme 👍

    • Chris Helme on 5 July 2024

Thanks Brian for your kind words about the show – if you have any thoughts about a favourite piece of brass band music you would like to hear again please let us know.

  27. Martyn Bassey on 5 July 2024

Amongst the many great tunes John Darvall played yesterday, it was absolutely brilliant to hear a song by Don Charles. He was an excellent singer. Many thanks Mr Darvall 👍

  28. Ricky Woith on 4 July 2024

I listen every day …the station is marvelous and so relaxing .

  29. Barbara Heathcote on 1 July 2024

Hi Andy can I add another song for your bit of nonsense slot please. Spike Millingan Ying Tang song, certainly twaddle.

  30. Nic miles on 1 July 2024

Why have you started playing 80s music ?

    • Andy Marriott on 1 July 2024

      Hi Nic,

We haven’t ‘started’ playing 80’s music. We have had a small selection of easy and fun tunes from that decade on our playlist since day one in 2015. We play songs on merit regardless of the decade of their recording, although to my mind that does mean fewer and fewer as the years pass! I think you heard The Birdies Song, a daft 1980s version of a 1931 song. I’m not sure it even qualifies as 80s music!

  31. Dave Phillips on 30 June 2024

    Hi Andy,
Thanks for bringing Brass Band Music to SR I’m really looking forward to Friday 5th July for a new adventure
    Best wishes
Dave ( not so sunny Donny!)👏😎

    • Alan Jowett on 1 July 2024

      Yes thanks Serenade Radio

      • Andy Marriott on 1 July 2024

Yes, I’m looking forward to it too. I’ve been looking for some different music shows for a while. More to come, hopefully. The presenter of Bandstand, Chris Helme really knows and loves his music.

  32. Martyn Bassey on 30 June 2024

Many thanks to Steve James for his three shows over the weekend. It was a wonderful surprise to hear Samantha Jones singing I Deserve It. An absolute favourite of mine. I haven’t heard it on the radio for years. Thankfully we have Serenade Radio to continue bringing us these forgotten gems which other stations no longer play. Many thanks once again 👍😊

    • Steve James on 30 June 2024

Hi Martin, ‘I Deserve It’ is a long-term favourite of mine too. An outstanding vocal performance from Sam and a superb production too. I love to feature some of the lesser-known Brit-girl records of the 60s, so I’ll keep ’em coming!

  33. Nancy on 30 June 2024

On The Town was a great concelebration of Canadian and American musical stylings. The David Bowie/Anthony Newley connection was very cool! Thank you Mark Steyn – you’re the best.

    • Mark Steyn on 5 July 2024

Thanks, Nancy. I once suggested to Anthony Newley that he do a version of Bowie’s “Space Oddity”: He could have pulled it off.

      • Nancy on 5 July 2024

Great. Now I’ve got a Newley earworm singing the Major Tom song…

      • Paul in Ohio on 12 July 2024

Some time ago I was so impressed with the research and detail in your Stranger’s in the Night Song of the Week. Was wondering if you had heard Billy May’s amazing version.

  34. Martyn Bassey on 29 June 2024

Lots of great tunes on the TV Show this evening. Jason King, Flintstones, Paul Temple, Persuaders, the Adventurer are just a few of my favourites. I remember watching General Hospital whenever I was off school. Many thanks Mr Marriott 😊

    • Karen on 30 June 2024

The Persuaders was my absolute favourite. When all my friends has David Cassidy or Donnie Osmond pictures on their walls I was in love with Tony Curtis ( I think I was about 8!), And the music for that and the adventurer were brilliant. And yes General Hospital when I was off sick from school… with the bloke who then turned up in my nan’s favourite Crossroads. That’s what is so great about this programme it brings it all back.

      • Martyn Bassey on 30 June 2024

John Barry wrote some tremendous themes for film and TV.
The bloke was Dr Bywaters in GH, and Adam Chance in Crossroads. Yes you are sooo right, the TV Show brings it all back 🙂

  35. Fraser Sutherland on 29 June 2024

Steyn’s ‘On the Town’. Best yet. Damn fine. Great joyous range. 57 mins running time in what seems like 5. Plain, simple thanks to Mark. I’m done.

    • Mark Steyn on 5 July 2024

Actually, it’s 59-and-a-half minutes, Fraser – unless you’re suggesting we need to put some retro 1924 news bulletin in at the top of the hour. Hope you’ll tune in again this weekend.

  36. Andy Grahamme on 29 June 2024

Late Night Extra with Steve James is a great end to Saturday….such a groovy prog…far out man!!

    • Steve Burke on 29 June 2024

I agree superb show and essential listening

      • Steve James on 29 June 2024

Thank you for lending a late-night ear Andy and Steve. Far out? I can assure you the programme is powered by nothing more potent than a mug of bedtime cocoa!

  37. Martyn Bassey on 29 June 2024

Wonderful show presented by Stuart Linnell today. Thoroughly enjoyed the music played. Many thanks Mr Linnell.

    • Stuart Linnell on 29 June 2024

Thank you Martyn. Really pleased you enjoyed it.

  38. David Small on 29 June 2024

Adrian Jackson — So sad this is your last programme Adrian it has been a brilliant series and I have so much enjoyed it. Hope you will be back with another series in the future

    • Adrian Jackson on 29 June 2024

Thank you for your kind comments and indeed thanks to everyone. It has been my pleasure to present Evergreen but as Andy has said, my work is taking me away for a while. Until next time………..

  39. Brian Bunn on 28 June 2024

Hi, Listening to the excellent “Evergreen” programme atm, heard the presenter say it’s the last show 😫 Does that mean the presenter is packing up, or the whole show finished ? I hope it continues because it is a brilliant programme, the retro instrumentals are awesome

    • Nancy on 29 June 2024

I thought I heard that too. A loss if it’s the last.

      • Andy Marriott on 29 June 2024

Yes, that was indeed the last programme. Adrian has conducting commitments that mean he is not available for the foreseeable future. I would have been happy for the programme to continue but we couldn’t find anyone to take it on. It will be back!
Next week a new show which has been requested by lots of people over the last few months, an hour of brass band music from around the world. Bandstand next Friday (July 5th) at 9pm.

        • Brian Bunn on 29 June 2024

Thanks Andy. “Bandstand” sounds a great idea, I shall definitely tune in 😊
Please keep the retro “instrumental” songs!

  40. Michael in Cornwall on 28 June 2024

So pleased to have discovered this radio station and a huge thank you to you all. I have it on constantly and love the range and choice of music.

  41. Richard Hindley on 28 June 2024

Hi SIMON McLEAN from Australia where I hear MUSIC BOX at 9am. Have been collecting your kind of music since the mid fifties (when I was at school!) so it’s fun to hear many of your selections from my own collection: i.e. our good taste! You inspired me to make a donation.

    • Simon McLean on 28 June 2024

Hi Richard, thanks very much – delighted to hear you’re enjoying the show, even at 9am! There’s some great instrumental music from Australia which is very rarely heard up here, though I try to do what I can to fix that!

  42. Barbara Heathcote on 27 June 2024

Hi Andy, thank you for Purple People Eater on your bit of twaddle this evening.

  43. Andy Grahamme on 26 June 2024

I’m so pleased to see that Radio Heroes is being repeated. This was a smashing series. Worthy of an industry award and each episode a quality production. So looking forward to hearing it again.

    • Neil Anthony on 15 July 2024

Thanks for such a lovely comment Andy. Pleased you’re enjoying the series again.

  44. Karen on 26 June 2024

Thank you for playing Bernard Monshin on music while you work today. Still my favourite mwyw artist i have heard on SR. I have only ever come across one album he made called Sway like Latin. I have never heard him played in other SR programming but it is very good.

    • Brian Reynolds on 27 June 2024

Glad you heard Bernard Monshin’s broadcast, Karen. I thought that it was a particularly good one. ‘Sway like Latin was his only LP, although he did make some ’78s’ – four of which were issued on an extended play record in the fifties. You can find some Pathe Newsreel clips of his pre-war orchestra on line. After the war he was asked to form an orchestra specifically for broadcasting and he appeared in many series, including ‘Tango Time’, ‘Morning Music’ and ‘Serenade in the Night’ . He did hundreds of broadcasts (including 146 editions of MWYW. He was also what is known as a ‘fixer’ – one who provides conductors with the best musicians and, as such, was a very powerful man in the music business. He ‘fixed’ one of the James Bond films !
I think that ‘Serenade Radio’ will be featuring him again on MWYW in a couple of weeks.

  45. Barbara Heathcote on 25 June 2024

Hi Andy, a song popped into my head, as it often does 🤣. Sheb Woolley song The Purple People Eater, just wondered if suitable for your bit of nonsense slot,

    • Nancy on 25 June 2024

Excellent bit of fun there Barbara! Also anything by Ray Stevens (like The Streak)😂

      • Barbara Heathcote on 25 June 2024

Yes Nancy I’d forgotten that. A good choice.

      • Karen on 26 June 2024

i have heard fhe streak before on the twaddle slot. It is always very funny though. I dont remember what purple people eater even is. So i shall have to google it now😅

        • Nancy on 26 June 2024

Purple People Eater came out around the same time as Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini. Fun, funny, and silly.
The Streak is flat out funny. Play it again Sam!

          • Karen on 27 June 2024

Nancy… Now ive heard it on the radio, i have heard it before. I must have been very young though as it had completely slipped my ( somewhat foggy) mind. Good fun. Good suggestion Barbara.

  46. Jack Atherton on 25 June 2024

More than forty years ago the song my bride and I waltzed to at our wedding was “They Were You” from The Fantasticks. Outside of the show we’d never heard it performed, but on the first night of our honeymoon we walked into restaurant and heard a lovely rendition for piano and harp. This little bit of magic nearly convinced Aymsley that she hadn’t made a mistake. Thanks, Tom and Harvey.

  47. Martyn on 24 June 2024

On Mark Steyn’s On the Town this week, I love Midnight At The Oasis. Absolute classic. Thanks for playing it and for the interview with Maria Muldaur. Brilliant 🙂

    • Nancy on 24 June 2024

I was living in the (then) beautiful little beach town of Santa Cruz California when Midnight at the Oasis came out. What a time to be young, tanned, and fancy free!

  48. Bob on 24 June 2024

Just wanted to say to John Darvall that the last Serenade Spotlight was fabulous with the Carpenters songs that I had not heard before can we have more like that please

  49. David on 24 June 2024

Listening! Love the station and format. David S. Broussard Louisiana

  50. Fraser Sutherland on 23 June 2024

I’m new to ‘Soft Folkus’ with Roger Williams. I was struck by how expertly the playlist was chosen and so beautifully balanced. Truly enjoyable….so thanks very much indeed Roger. To finish with Ella and Louis was tremendous. Yet another addictive Serenade programme and presenter, by the way.

    • Roger Williams on 24 June 2024

      Hello Fraser,

Lovely to meet you and thank you for your kind comments about Soft Folkus. I very much enjoy putting the show together and comments like yours are very encouraging. If there are artists you’d like to suggest who you feel might suit the show, please let me know and be a member of our Soft Folkus Group! Thank you for being there.

      Roger W

  51. Armando Loni on 23 June 2024

Steyn’s Song of the Week: great episode, Mark, with an all-time favourite from Peter Sarstedt. Many thanks.

  52. Edgar on 23 June 2024

Good to be back. I’ve been on vacation and without a really good radio station most of that time. Listening any other way than on my computer at home is just too complicated. I have difficulty using a flip phone to make calls.

  53. Barbara Heathcote on 23 June 2024

Hi Mark, yesterday you played a piece of music that you’d played for Leslie Nielsen, Batik? Is that the correct spelling? I have a vision of someone dancing to that music either in a film or tv programme. I can’t just think where. I can’t remember what you said the origin of the music was. Help. Had me thinking all day.

    • Mark Steyn on 23 June 2024

That would be Earl Bostic, Barbara, with his version of Liszt’s Liebestraum (Number Three). Film-wise, you might be thinking of Mike Figgis’s 1991 picture Liebestraum, with Kim Novak, in which Mr Bostic’s record features.

      • Barbara Heathcote on 23 June 2024

Hi Mark. Thank you for answering so quickly. Kim Novak doesn’t ring a bell though. Perhaps I’ll never remember, never mind.

    • Nancy on 24 June 2024

Barbara, you triggered a fun memory for me. When I was in college I competed in speech tournaments in dramatic interpretation. One national competition was in Los Angeles in 1972 at the Biltmore Hotel (George Segal filmed “The Black Bird” there). Leslie Nielsen attended one of the final rounds and selected to win a young woman who carried a ‘wed wed wose’ and declaimed something from “Peanuts”. I won first place and received my award from Roscoe Lee Browne. I’ve long since forgiven Mr. Nielson (RIP)

  54. Nick Hingley on 23 June 2024

‘Berceuse de Jocelyn’ – Benjamin Godard
A long time since I heard any of this forgotten opera music! A section of the berceuse was used for the ident/station announcement of ‘sweet music’ Radio 390 from Red Sands Tower* in the Thames Estuary.
I wonder if I’m the only one who sings to Serenade Radio jingles: “Hallmark of Quality Britain Radio” ? 😉
    * If you want to see what the towers looked like at the time check out the ‘Not so Jolly Roger’ episode of Danger Man (starring Patrick McGoohan) which you will find in the usual places.

    • Peter Tomlinson on 24 June 2024

      Hi Nick,
Not only are you very knowlegeable in musical terms but you have great taste too!

      • Nick Hingley on 25 June 2024

        Hi Peter
You are very kind. I’m definitely no expert – it’s merely what I have gathered up during the biggest part of seven decades of listening, having always preferred the radio to TV, and also having been fortunate to have a broad taste – and not care greatly what anyone thinks!
I had become very disappointed with more recent broadcast radio so was delighted to find Serenade Radio not long after it had started. There isn’t a programme on here that I don’t enjoy and Serenade has broadened my knowledge greatly.

  55. Nick Hingley on 23 June 2024

Great to hear the much underrated Timi Yuro getting plays. Have just heard her on Steve James breakfast show. I have this morning’s track on an album I found in a charity shop for 50p.
It has something of a Latin beat but ‘It’ll Never Be Over For Me’ has long been a favourite end of night play on the Northern Soul scene.

    • Vic Groves on 23 June 2024

She was a great singer!! There are a few live performances online.

  56. Martyn Bassey on 22 June 2024

I always enjoy the Cindy Kent show. I usually listen on Sunday morning but I was able to hear it today. Great music and lots of jolly chat in between. Many thanks 🙂

  57. Fraser Sutherland on 22 June 2024

Re: ‘On the Town’ latest edition. Mark Steyn teaches you how to listen. He shows you how to enjoy. He tells you something. This is such a great programme.

    • Nancy on 22 June 2024

My husband and I listen to Mark’s program at 10 PM on Saturdays, sitting together, sipping a whiskey and enjoying his music and stories.

      • Fraser Sutherland on 23 June 2024

Now that is a winning combination, Nancy. Serenade radio, Mark Steyn’s programme, whisky and Montana!

    • Paul on 22 June 2024

Absolutely Fraser, a joy to listen and learn. I thought “Steyn’s Song of the Week” was cracking, but “On The Town” hits a new high; thank you Mark Steyn and everyone at SR who makes this possible.

    • Mark Steyn on 23 June 2024

Too kind, Fraser (and Nancy and Paul). It’s such a fun show to put together – and Serenade’s the only station in the British Isles (and maybe on the planet) that would even consider airing it.

  58. Terry Fennell on 22 June 2024

Litening to Gerry & The Pace Makers reminded me of their concert many years ago at the De Monfort Halls , Leicester. They had a quite scruffy looking support act that I think may have turned into The Rolling Stones.
I grew up with R&R and remember the first Bill Hayley and then Elvis.
I think I’m older than any of you there! lol

  59. Nancy on 22 June 2024

What an excellent program tonight Johnny Mac (with the understandable exception of Miss Merman-yikes). So much good music!

    • Johnny Mac on 22 June 2024

Ahh, dear Ethel. Blasting out and blowing away those cobwebs! Thank you again, Nancy, for tuning in.

    • Karen on 22 June 2024

It was great wasn’t it. I kept thinking i would go back to sleep in a minute but it never happened. And I got the third mystery year right which is a first for me!

      • Johnny Mac on 22 June 2024

These beautiful and bright mornings have us all up with the lark.

        And, well done, Karen!

        • Suzy on 22 June 2024

So many of us are lying in bed or early risers and listening to all the gorgeousness from the safe haven that is Serenade. Yes, love Johnny Mac followed by Gentle Ed. Perfection!

          • Johnny Mac on 22 June 2024

Thank you, Suzy. Our ever increasing number of night owls and early birds grows!

  60. Martyn Bassey on 22 June 2024

    Thanks for playing Françoise Hardy♥️
Three fab songs for the mystery year. What a belter by Glen Campbell. Great stuff Johnny 👍

    • Johnny Mac on 22 June 2024

Glen is one of my heroes. And, Françoise..what a loss.

      Thank you again, Martyn.

  61. Karen on 22 June 2024

i always think of blazing saddles when anyone plays Count Basie too johnny. (I think that was the first time i actually saw rather than just heard him) . I also think of it when anyone plays April in Paris… Which is quite a lot on SR ! !

    • Johnny Mac on 22 June 2024

Karen, we are kindred spirits. My mind meanders all day long. But hopefully zones in when I have open my mouth….but, that’s not guaranteed either!

    • Edgar on 23 June 2024

I never did myself. A radio station where I live that played this kind of music had no DJs but man who worked there was happy to help when I asked what was played. I was in an area where the signal wasn’t good and all I heard was the “Pop Goes the Weasel” part, but he told me the story about “Blazing Saddles”. Sadly, the station couldn’t get enough donations to keep the format going.

      • Edgar on 23 June 2024

I was in the car in an area where the terrain caused me problems, but usually I wasn’t. It wasn’t normal for me to not hear an entire song.

  62. Martyn Bassey on 22 June 2024

Absolutely fabulous song by Nat King Cole. Thanks Johnny.
I was way off on the mystery year I’m afraid. Better luck in an hour I hope 😄

    • Johnny Mac on 22 June 2024

Thanks, Martyn. We all love our crooners. And, I nust play more Brook Benton on A Little Night Music. Best time of the day and all!

      • Johnny Mac on 22 June 2024

        Must*

Nust is a must to avoid! Where are my spectacles…

  63. Nancy on 22 June 2024

“Mama” – my Nonna would weep when she heard it. And now, so many years later, it makes me weep.

    • Johnny Mac on 22 June 2024

Morning folks. Yes, Mama pulls at the heartstrings. Hope all is well out there. JM

  64. Martyn Bassey on 22 June 2024

Hi Johnny. I’m pretty confident about this first year. Brilliant song by Brook Benton 🙂

    • Nancy on 22 June 2024

You’re so clever Martyn! I’m late to the party, what have I missed?

      • Martyn Bassey on 22 June 2024

Hi Nancy. Shirley Bassey, Chris Barber, and Brook Benton. I got the year right 1959 😊

        • Nancy on 22 June 2024

Mmmm! There’s great music tonight. Johnny Mac never disappoints.

          • Johnny Mac on 22 June 2024

Thank you again, Nancy. I very much appreciate you listening in to A Little Night Music. Have a good weekend.

      • Martyn Bassey on 22 June 2024

I’m listening at 4 o’clock in the morning, so it must be great music. 👍😄

        • Nancy on 22 June 2024

9PM in beautiful Big Sky Country

  65. Barbara Heathcote on 21 June 2024

Hi Andy thank you for playing Pat Boone song Speedy Gonzales as your bit of nonsense. Such a change from songs like April Live. I think green shield stamps etc have been replaced by store loyalty cards now.

  66. Karen on 21 June 2024

What a lovely program Stringtime Serenade was last night with the lovely calm voice of Gerald Baxter doing the announcing. Very relaxing. Make Dick Fisher’s show following sound almost raucous…. Only joking Dick you know i love your show 😉

  67. Barbara Heathcote on 18 June 2024

Hi Andy, great to hear Pat Boone, recently turned 90 and still performing. Perhaps Speedy Gonzales could be your bit of nonsense sometime please.

    • Dick Fisher on 21 June 2024

Hearing this on Andy’s show this am, I realised why this song had stuck in my memory. In 1962, I lived with my parents in a flat in Erdington Birmingham. The teenage girl next door used to play this constantly through every waking hour. Yet somehow, I didn’t mind hearing it again today! Green stamps with the Tequila? Where’s that shop again?

  68. Colin on 18 June 2024

    Andy
I enjoy everything on Serenade Radio and the nonsense at 8 30 is fantastic. It’s got me thinking of loads of comedy songs and parodies that just aren’t played on radio today! For example The Barron Knights had a few hits and are still touring today!A hit from the 60s which works today is Under New Management but there are many more.I’ve noticed as well that Arthur Mullard and Hylda Baker have an album of covers with Your The One That I Want the best known one. Finally there’s a song by John Shuttleworth called I Can’t Go Back To Savoury Now which would also fit in as the 830 twoddle!

  69. Brian Reynolds on 18 June 2024

I hope that many are enjoying the ‘Music While You Work’ shows this week. The warm and lovingly crafted arrangements of Carlos Romanos (alias Wilf Todd) on Monday, followed this morning by the genius of Jack Coles, playing some of the brilliant arrangements that he did for the BBC Midland Light orchestra, which he conducted for many years. This turned out to be his final broadcast. Music While You Work was a lovely series . Nothing like it on national radio these days, so we have to be very grateful to Serenade Radio for catering for the mature listener.

  70. Martyn Bassey on 16 June 2024

Many thanks Vic for playing Françoise Hardy on your show today. It’s wonderful that Serenade is here to continue to play her music. She was a fabulous singer. Thanks Vic 👍

    • Vic Groves on 16 June 2024

You’re very welcome Martyn. Thanks for the thanks!! I love playing this great music on Serenade Radio.

  71. David Bownes on 16 June 2024

The presenter just asked if anyone knew who duetted on Two Dreams Met by Geraldo and his orchestra. The singers were Dorothy Carless and Len Camber it was recorded 3rd April 1941
    Great program!

    • Vic Groves on 16 June 2024

Thanks David. Much appreciated. I should have known it was Dorothy Carless…I bought The Carless Touch CD not long ago! Pleased you are enjoying the programme. Keep listening!

  72. Suzy on 16 June 2024

I was so moved by Mark Steyn’s Father’s Day programme this morning. … Ending with the wonderful Soliloquy from Carousel that I often sang right through with my dad, and being his little girl, the second part was so softly and lovingly sung just for me. Followed by our lovely gentle Ed – what a start to the day. Thank you again, Serenade.

    • Mark Steyn on 16 June 2024

That’s impressive, Suzy. It’s a whole lot of material to keep straight in your head. My dad, who loved the Soliloquy as yours did, was only really reliable on the “My boy Bill” bits. But, on days like these (see Nancy’s comment below), so many feelings are bound up with songs, and the absence of loved ones no longer around to sing them. Thank you for listening (and I’m honoured to be Ed’s warm-up act).

  73. Nancy on 16 June 2024

Mark Steyn’s Father’s Day program was so touching.
My dad sang Nancy With The Laughing Face to my great annoyance during my childhood and teens. I’d give the world to hear him sing it to me again.

  74. David Norman on 15 June 2024

    ANDY MARRIOTT’S TV SHOW
    An hour of some of the most memorable music ever written; Never before have I heard such a collection of UNINTERRUPTED Idents, Commercials and Themes. A radio dream come-true. As recent convert to S R it’s amazing, Perhaps next week REQUEST for the first ever commercial transmitted on ITV;
The Gibbs ’S R’ Commercial. !! After working nearly 40 years for LWT this is so entertaining.

  75. Nancy on 15 June 2024

Looking forward to Mark Steyn’s On The Town program tonight. It’s heard here (Montana) at 10PM and I’m grateful that the time difference works in our favor!

  76. Steve in Worcs. on 15 June 2024

Hi Andy, the female singer of “Thank You For Being A Friend” was Cynthia Fee; great song and series.

Is there a chance of hearing a really good theme for an unusual TV series from the USA. It was called a ‘wheel’ series, because it used different central characters each week, and also unusual because each episode was 90 minutes long.

It was “Name of the Game”, with Gene Barry, Robert Stack and Tony Franciosa,

Many thanks to all at Serenade, as always.

    • Martyn Bassey on 15 June 2024

I remember that series. Don’t forget Susan Saint James. Great theme tune 👍

      • Steve in Worcs. on 16 June 2024

I could never forget the delightful “Mrs. McMillan”, still looking lovely these days.

You had a nice “mensh” (mention) on Andy’s show yesterday, Martin! 😎

I am a big fan of Dave Grusin (who wrote the theme for Name Of The Game), and as he wrote the theme for my favourite TV series of all time – St. Elsewhere – I picked up a CD of his greatest hits in Florida in 1989. He has a huge canon of work to his name, including music for 100 films.

    • Martyn Bassey on 16 June 2024

Oh yes I remember Mrs McMillan as well! 😊.
Dave Grusin’s lovely theme for the The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter, starring Alan Arkin, is a favourite of mine. 👍

  77. Barry on 15 June 2024

Have been housebound this week due to illness but am back to full fitness now thankfully. My thanks to Serenade and all the presenters for keeping my spirits up 5his week with great music and chat. Like having a friend with me during the endless days

  78. Nancy on 15 June 2024

Doesn’t get better than Roy Orbison! My vanity license plate is a variation of “Blue Bayou”.
    Putting on my memory cap.

    • Nancy on 15 June 2024

      Wonderful variety of music Johnny!

      • Johnny Mac on 15 June 2024

Thank you, Nancy. It’s a real pleasure to delve into the Serenade Radio library and select true gems of easy listening for A Little Night Music.

        • Nancy on 15 June 2024

          0 for 2 🙁

          • Johnny Mac on 15 June 2024

Oh, don’t fret. One more chance at the Mini Mystery Year at 5.15am our time!

            • Martyn Bassey on 15 June 2024

I managed to get 1964 and 1961. More by luck than judgement 😀 Fab music Johnny 👍

              • Nancy on 15 June 2024

Love the mystery year tunes but my mind is a sieve tonight – I’ve been tempted to cheat…

                • Martyn Bassey on 15 June 2024

I know what you mean 😄. I was fortunate today. I got the three of them. 🙂

                • Johnny Mac on 15 June 2024

Well, still raise a glass to yourselves all the same!

  79. Andy Grahamme on 14 June 2024

Stuart Linnell’s show is a fabulous programme. such great music and quality entertaining presentation…

  80. Hans Rip on 14 June 2024

What a brilliant station. ‘Our kind of music” presented by professionals

  81. Gary Trinder on 13 June 2024

It has been a pleasure to hear most of The Music and Mantovani broadcasts on Serenade and very interesting to hear Mantovani making minor changes to the arrangements of those used for his Decca recordings. All in beautiful hi-fi as a bonus.

    • Chris Muermann on 14 June 2024

You´re right Gary, these “The Music and Mantovani” are most interesting. Great rarities.

  82. Nick Hingley on 13 June 2024

Followers of Late Night Extra will be saddened to learn of the death of Françoise Hardy who added more than a dash of French chic to the swinging sixties.
So sad that attempts at collaboration with Nick Drake came to nought.

  83. Nancy on 12 June 2024

John Helling’s Hour of Jazz was terrific today! Great selections, particularly Dudley Moore Trio ( great musician and entertainer!)

    • Nick Hingley on 13 June 2024

I was so pleased when John got a gig on Serenade Radio. He used to present a two-hour jazz show across BBC local stations Hereford & Worcester, Shropshire and Stoke that I never used to miss.

      • John Hellings on 2 July 2024

Nick, many thanks for your kind comments and also apologies for the delay in replying. I’m very lucky to be able to play music I love and have for years.

    • John Hellings on 1 July 2024

Nancy, Many thanks for your kind comments and apologies for the delay in replying. Our Dud really was a great musician, entertainer and giggler. A real loss to music.

      John

  84. Edgar on 11 June 2024

In the states we call “Land of Hope and Glory” by the name “Pomp and Circumstance” and play it when people graduate from school. Do they call it graduating in England?

    • Nick Hingley on 13 June 2024

The music is, of course, Pomp & Circumstance March No.1 by Sir Edward Elgar, and is a permanent fixture of the Last Night of The Proms in September with the audience singing along in what is very much a party atmosphere. The words were added by AC Benson. Its use is now considered a little controversial as it is seen as imperialistic and jingoistic and there have been various attempt to tone down the Last Night proceedings.
Edward Elgar, complete with military style moustache, is seen as the epitome of Edwardian England; however, for much of his life he felt himself an outsider – he was self-taught and from a provincial (Worcester) background, his father was ‘in trade’, and he was a Catholic – and it has been said he was not overly happy with the words that were added to his music. However, the man who is famous for his Enigma Variations is very much an enigma himself.
It certainly wasn’t used at my school or college graduation – but that was a long time ago! (School’s Out by Alice Cooper was current but I don’t think that will make it to the Serenade playlist!)
Actually, my favourite is Pomp & Circumstance March No.4.

  85. David Purll on 10 June 2024

    Roger

Thank you for playing Trisha Yearwood on Sunday evening. I was reminded of a other song she’d recorded, ” The Song Remembers When”. Could you possiblyinclude the version by Rumer at some time?

    • Roger Williams on 15 June 2024

Great suggestion David. I’ll put it on the list. It’ll take a little while to fettle it up. Best wishes to you and Ruth

  86. Chris Muermann on 10 June 2024

The last time I wrote a comment here was over a year ago in May 2023 and since then I didn´t had a day without listening to Serenade Radio. My favourite daily program is Dick Fisher which I hear mostly in the evening from 11 p.m. over midnight to 1 a.m. (these are german times as I´m living in Berlin). I like the style of Dick how he presents his program so very much. After that I hear “Music Box” with Simon McLean as I´m a great admirer of instrumental music. Then I hear the weekly programs “An Hour Of Jazz” with John Hellings and “Big Band Special” with Johnny Beerling. I remember very clearly the same program with Sheila Tracy on Radio 2 years ago. I have my ASTRA satellite system since nearly over 30 years and that´s why I heard Sheila Tracy every week with great recordings of the BBC Big Band sometimes also live programs from different british cities. Great memories! But back to Serenade Radio. Sometimes there are “special” programs which I nearly missed, like “The Music And Mantovani” program on Thursday evenings. So it´s my attention to check the Serenade Radio web site regulary to see what special programs are on. As I´m also a great radio fan in general, of course I searched also for simular stations on my Internet Radio. There are some great jazz stations in the USA which I hear also regulary but Serenade Radio is really unique. Every presenter has it´s own great style but Dick Fisher is my favourite!!! So keep up that wonderful work that you do for us listeners. And everytime I hear Serenade Radio I feel a little british although I´m a german.

    • Dick Fisher on 10 June 2024

      Hi Chris
I for one am so delighted that you get so much pleasure from listening to Serenade. It proves that great music transcends language any day of the week. I too have almost given up listening to other radio stations, simply because Serenade ticks so many musical boxes! Thank you for your kind comments. When you have the opportunity – tell a friend!

      • Chris Muermann on 11 June 2024

        Hi Dick,
I already told my friends about Serenade Radio. And I know three of them are listening to Serenade Radio regulary. I wonder how many people listens to your program in the morning and how many in the evening. I would say a few more listens in the morning. But for me it´s a regular nice constant to hear you in the evening (or in the night) and after your two hours Simon McLeans “Music Box”. And what a coincidence: The first song you played on your show today was “There´ll Be A Hot Time In The Town Of Berlin” by Bing Crosby. Frank Sinatra did also a great version of this song. But you know this better than me. You´re the expert!

  87. Brian Reynolds on 9 June 2024

I enjoyed ‘Evergreen’ on Friday = particularly Maurice Arnold and his sextet, one of my favourite light music ensembles from the sixties, playing ‘Ragamatazz’, written by pianist Cecil Norman, who (with his Rhythm Players), dominated the Light Programme for over 20 years. However, he was NOT the piano soloist, as stated. That was Maurice Arnold himself, who directed the group of three violins, guitar, double bass and percussion, Like Cecil , Maurice was a brilliant pianist and there is a video of him on line, playing a spectacular arrangement of ‘Three Blind Mice’

  88. Nancy on 9 June 2024

Mark Steyn’s On The Town program is our Saturday night date. All the music, stories, and connections make for a very entertaining hour. Pale Hands I Loved is such a beautiful song – and the composer’s life and end was fascinating.
Thank you Mark and Serenade Radio for all the enjoyment!

    • Mark Steyn on 10 June 2024

Thank you, Nancy. It saddens me that, along with a good ninety per cent of our playlist, “Pale Hands I Loved” is now heard only on Serenade and on no other radio stations. The BBC gets a huge whack of public funds to preserve the glories of our cultural inheritance and ignores almost all of it. Whereas Andy Marriott does it just out of the goodness of his heart. Odd.

      • Nancy on 10 June 2024

        NPR here is no better.
I thank Andy Marriott for providing an excellent station of music and presenters for all musical tastes. SR keeps me company during my day (and night!) and is a reminder of the musical beauty that’s available without selling products and politics. I’m so glad I found SR.

  89. Geoff Jones on 9 June 2024

Thanks Roger great track from Sandy Denny on tonight’s Soft Focus. Good programme. Until next week.

    • Roger Williams on 15 June 2024

      Roger

  90. Martyn Bassey on 8 June 2024

Fab tunes on the TV Show. All my favourites. Danger Man, Randall and Hopkirk, White Horses, Lightning Tree, Dr Who, The Champions, Department S, and The Saint. Loved every minute of the show. Many thanks Andy.

  91. Andy Grahamme on 8 June 2024

Stuart Linnell….thanks for a smashing programme today (as always) Stuart. Especially loved the 40’s rememberance and also that Vicki Carr track..delightful. Good wishes.

Thank you Andy. Best wishes to you too.

I remember the American version of TWTWTW in the early 60s. Millicent Martin was in my first “grown up” movie “Alfie” with Michael Caine. Great voice!
BTW, playing “You’ll Never Know” threw me off completely – couldn’t get Dame Vera out of my head. Oh well, one more try…

    • Johnny Mac on 8 June 2024

Isn’t Millicent Martin one of those true stars, and 90 today!

Better luck on the last mini mystery year, Nancy.

        1973. Face palm.

        • Johnny Mac on 8 June 2024

Well, a pat on the back for the first year of 1956! Thank you for being a stalwart of ‘the best time of the day’ show. Brava, Nancy.

  93. Nancy on 8 June 2024

Happy Friday Johnny Mac – Starting off with Fats is a good start!

    • Nancy on 8 June 2024

      • Johnny Mac on 8 June 2024

Ahh. Well done! Is it too late to have a celebratory slice of cake? Or at least a virtual chocolate biscuit across the airwaves! I’ve another two mini mystery years before 6am on A Little Night Music to go, mind…

  96. Suzy on 6 June 2024

What a lovely song ‘Moments to Remember’ is. I hadn’t heard it before Andy played it by The Four Lads, and I’ve just listened to it by The Ames Brothers – aaahhhh, beautiful.

  97. Steve Shelley on 5 June 2024

Great station. Brings back so many memories. And no depressing news!
Andy – please play the Department S theme, if you get the chance.

  99. JOHN WALSH on 3 June 2024

I am an artist and living in Ireland and spend long hours working in my studio and have discovered your beautiful radio channel which i use as background company when i paint . It is terrific to see you have the programme sing something simple. This brings back terrific memories of growing up in the 50s and 60s in Ireland and listening to this particular programme with my father 6.00 every Sunday evening. In Ireland it was called the light programme back in the day. Now with internet radio it is terrific to be able to enjoy once again. Pity my dad is not here anymore, maybe it’s streaming in heaven for him thank you for this beautiful station as i create my paintings in my own retirement.

    • Nancy on 3 June 2024

If heaven is perfect Serenade Radio is there!

  100. Martyn Bassey on 3 June 2024

Really enjoyed Steve James Late Night Extra as always. I not only enjoy the music but I find the background information about each artiste so interesting. They are mostly bands and singers I’ve never heard of before. Fabulous. Many thanks Steve 👍

  101. Douglas Brown on 3 June 2024

Hi to all at Serenade Radio

Just a note to say thank you to everyone for the hardwork and time given to the station. I found it by chance when looking for listening material for my father – in – law who was dog sitting for us.

I have never seen him so happy listening to any radio station.

    Regards

    Douglas

    • Dick Fisher on 3 June 2024

      Hi Douglas
Does the dog enjoy Serenade too?

      • Douglas Brown on 4 June 2024

Very much so, we found both of them in the conservatory fast a sleep while Serenade Radio was still playing in the background
