“We love a movie” by Cliff Richard – what a treat! Thank you Sonia for playing it. You always sound so informed about the music and make us laugh here in the Costa del Sol. We run a Cliff fan club and love the mix of music on Serenade. Keep up the fun days.
Sonia Beldom on 16 September 2025
Hola Lo and Lila. Glad you’re enjoying Serenade and the Cliff tracks. Thank you for your kind comments. Sonia x
Joe Davies on 15 September 2025
Just a heads up to Vic Groves that the Teddi King song you’ve no doubt innocently played today doesn’t translate into “kiss me” in French which is ‘embrasse-moi’, feel free to look up what Teddi is singing.
Andy Marriott on 15 September 2025
Hi Joe,
I think you are referring to the slang translation of “Baisez-moi”. From wiki: (French: “Kiss me”) is a renaissance French chanson for 4 voices, anonymous in publication by Pierre Attaignant but attributed to the composer Josquin Desprez. The song was the model for masses by Petrus Roselli and the Missa Baises-moy by Mathurin Forestier. Most famously recorded by The King’s Singers, the height of propriety.
Vic Groves on 15 September 2025
Thanks Joe ad Andy. I am to French what Segovia is to landscape painting! I once asked a Frenchman (in France) how much something was with the one word enquiry “Dimanche”. Regards, Vic
Joe Davies on 15 September 2025
Phew! Thanks Andy, that’s a relief!
Serves me a warning about Google translate though. 🙂
Steve in Worcs. on 13 September 2025
Good evening Roger and Paul,
Thank you so much for your kind mention, I can add it to my list of them by my radio heroes.
Fabulous programme as always.
Paul Ruddock on 13 September 2025
Our pleasure Steve, your detective work was greatly appreciated and deserving of a mention.
Thank you for your kind comment too.
Paul
Ps Roger is one of my radio heroes too!
Nancy on 13 September 2025
Caught the end of Mark Steyn’s On The Town program which concluded with Mel Torme and George Shearing’s wonderfully witty take on New York New York/The Bells Are Ringing, etc. I was fortunate and blessed to enjoy them perform this live at the Masson Winery concerts during the 80s. Happy 100th Mel – you were pretty darn great!
Johnny Mac, A Little Night Music on 14 September 2025
Hey Nancy.
Hope you enjoyed the trio of Mel Tormé tunes I played as my artist of the week.
Nancy on 14 September 2025
Hi Johnny! Je regrette circumstances kept me from joining you and the Night Music GEMs – a rarity to be sure! Our beloved friend Karen’s comment gave me a clue that Mel was your artist of the week. Hope to hear you next Friday (UK Saturday) 😁
Johnny Mac, A Little Night Music on 14 September 2025
Great to hear from you, and next weekend, I’ll be seeing you in all the old familiar places…
Karen on 13 September 2025
Another great show today Johnny Mac. Well … I have to admit … except 3 Mel Torme songs. But you know we can’t all like the same people ( so other listeners dont get cross with me !!! 😉 ) and he did write the Christmas Song for which I am very grateful.
Johnny Mac, A Little Night Music on 13 September 2025
We’re a broad church, here, Karen. All are welcome!
Karen on 13 September 2025
Absolutely. It’s one of the things that makes SR so special !
Martyn Bassey on 13 September 2025
Super entertainment from Sean Usher and Johnny Mac during the early hours of Saturday. Many thanks to you both 👍👍
Barbara Heathcote on 10 September 2025
Listening to John Darvall, thank you for playing 3 songs in row of my favourite singer Vic Damone. Fabulous
Karen on 10 September 2025
The breakfast show with andy marriott is always good, but the music choices for the last half our today were, for me, particularly perfect. So much so i stopped decorating made some tea and just sat and listened to the music. Great stuff . Thank you.
Dave in London on 9 September 2025
Thank you to David Yarnall for playing “It Hurts to Say Goodbye” in your actual French today (Tuesday). Sung by Françoise Hardy with lyrics cleverly rewritten by Serge Gainsbourg. Today’s interpretation wasn’t the standard one released by Françoise in 1968 so I wonder which of her recordings we got. I’m guessing it was from a TV appearance. Doesn’t really matter, it was lovely.
Andy Marriott, Station Manager on 9 September 2025
Hi Dave,
Well spotted Dave. The version David played was actually recorded for a short-lived LWT TV series in 1969 entitled: “Set ’em up Joe”. The “Joe” being Joe Brown. I really like this version, it has a bit more oomph than the single (which we also play from time to time). Cheers.
Dave in London on 10 September 2025
Good to know about the “new” version, thanks for that Andy. Hoping that Joe Brown is in the best possible health, I don’t think he has been touring for a number of years.
David Yarnall on 22 September 2025
Thank you Dave. I am glad you enjoyed it. The Gaffer, who is the fount of all knowledge, has explained all.
Martha Trewin on 9 September 2025
Hello Sonia – remember me? We went to school together and I love your stories about our old teachers. You played piano at all our school events and always loved the classics back then. I remember your massive sense of humour and so glad we’ve found you on Serenade which is a station we’ve only just discovered too. What a joy to hear your voice. Serenade is now our office music soundtrack and everyone’s loving it. This Little Bird by Marianne Faithfull is on now which brings back happy memories.
Sonia Beldom on 9 September 2025
Hi Martha. Yes, of course I remember you and your flute! I’m thrilled that you’ve found Serenade and that it’s playing in your office. It’s a joy to be presenting on the station as it’s my kind of music as you so rightly say. Keep listening and spreading the word and let’s catch up properly. Happy Tunesday Tuesday! Sonia x
Nick Hingley on 6 September 2025
Dance Band Days: Some very period 1930s sounds this week – ‘The Music Goes Round’ always makes me think of Desmond Carrington but mention George Elrick and for a long time he was best known to me as a regular member of the ATV talent show ‘New Faces’ along with Arthur Askey, Mickie Most, and the one whose comments we always waited for: Tony Hatch (one of whose compositions I just noticed was second up on Dinner at Eight as I write).
Roger Williams on 8 September 2025
Hello Nick
I’d forgotten that George Elrick was on the New Faces panel (in fact I may not have realised that in the first place -although I did watch the show). I remember him very clearly on Housewives’ Choice singing along to the theme tune! It’s extraordinary what memories this music puts us in touch with…
Roger
Sandra on 6 September 2025
Paul and James, what a lovely Swingin Easy programme last night such lovely music, well done and thank you
Paul Ruddock on 6 September 2025
Thank you Sandra, that’s really kind of you to say; I’m so glad you’re enjoying the music!
There’ll be more next Friday at the same time.

Anne W on 5 September 2025
Quick question who gets to choose album of the week🤔
Serenade Radio on 6 September 2025
Hi Anne, it’s a team effort, we also welcome suggestions from listeners.
Ian C on 7 September 2025
……..And I always thought it was Kevin from California who selected Album of the Week on a Sunday evening !
Steve in Worcs. on 8 September 2025
Hi All @ Serenade,
May I make a suggestion re: Album of the Week? When it was issued in 1983, I bought it straight away, because it was perfection. The beautiful, clear vocals of Linda Ronstadt, singing torch songs of the 30s and 40s, and to top it all, musical arrangements and orchestration by the Grand Master, Nelson Riddle. It is “What’s New?”.
Many thanks.
Anne W on 5 September 2025
Great show John Walton loved all those new songs you played😎 can’t wait for next weeks show. Your the tops😊
John Walton on 5 September 2025
Wow thanks, Anne! Such positive feedback is just what we need to get us off to a confident start! 😀
Anthony Parkin on 6 September 2025
Proof that good music is still being produced but often these new artists or reworking of known songs are not being heard except for stations like Serenade.
I still(when I can afford to)buy albums to add to my music library. I like having physical items. A radio station has to offer a wide variety. Select songs. Please as many listeners as possible which you do.
These days CD’s and especially vinal is not inexpensive. But worse I often seek out new artists like Matt Dusk as a random example.
The recordings are difficult to find. Obtain. And more expensive than those readily available in somewhere like HMV and you just think. I cannot afford it.
Equally established artists are releasing their back catalogues and it often does not turn up on where many of us buy our music. Online or in shops. It too often means that we just give up.
Anthony Parkin on 6 September 2025
I should make clear a point I did not elaborate on in the previous post is. Buy an album of an artist…you will get perhaps 10+ songs per album so hear extra songs that may not be played on the radio. Only a few may get airplay. But again Serenade is better than that.
Karen on 5 September 2025
The twaddle has been classic this week. Jonathan Edwards piano playing on tiptoe through the tulips is just brilliant. And I shall have ” tiptoe, tippy tiptoe toe ” running in my head for the rest of the day. Thanks Andy. Looking forward to when their greatest hits is chosen ad album of the week 😅
Barry Williams on 4 September 2025
I had to smile this morning when Andy mentioned Hubert Gregg and his great show which used to air on Radio 2. Andy remarked ‘From the days when Radio 2 knew what they were doing’. Priceless ,and how very true.
Steve in Worcs. on 6 September 2025
Hi Barry,
I did smile too, at the mention of Hubert’s name. R*di*2 was superb back in those days.
It was great that Hubert was included in the series “Radio Greats”(?), along with other giants on here.
I wrote a message on a “memorial page” for Hubert on hearing of his death, and had a lovely message in reply from his producer Roy Oakeshott, and still have it. He said Hubert’s wife was overwhelmed by the huge amount of admiration and respect for him. He was a ‘gentleman of broadcasting’.
Barry Williams on 7 September 2025
Hi Steve, yes Hubert Gregg was a very talented chap and a real gent . I watched him recently in the film ‘The Maggie’ , a very funny film. His radio programme was a real treat, amusing and informative, he’s greatly missed
Brian Bunn on 3 September 2025
Hi Andy, I’ve been listening to your wonderful Radio Sation for about 3 years now, using the “Hey Google SmartSpeaker”
Just wondered if other listeners have had the same problem (or if your listening figures have gone down) but from about mid-August this year, my “Hey Google SmartSpeaker won’t connect 😫 though it does connect to other stations. Just wondered if the issue is my end ???
Pat on 4 September 2025
I’m having no issues, have you asked it to play Serenade through TuneIn?
Paul on 4 September 2025
I had the same issue from mid August onwards and asking it to play via Tunein solved the problem – clearly some techy type thing, I’m just glad it’s working again.
Funnily enough it was only the Google devices which were affected, my internet radios were fine.
Brian Bunn on 10 September 2025
Hi Paul, thanks for this 😊 I tried saying “Tune In” and it works, much appreciated
Brian Bunn on 10 September 2025
Hi Pat, thanks for this, I’ve tried it saying “Tune in” and it works 👍 Much appreciated
Nancy on 3 September 2025
Sonia – what a pleasure to hear Freddy Cannon (California Here I Come). I’ve enjoyed him from coast to coast!
Sonia Beldom on 5 September 2025
Aah yes – Freddy is fabulous. Thanks for taking the time to write in and keep listening to the lovely music.
Ralph Stroud on 3 September 2025
I can’t believe this station has been going for so long and I only discovered it a week ago. I am usually a Radio 3 listener but the rest of the household do not like classical, so we used to compromise and listen to Radio 2. Then the playlist changed and it was too modern.
Reading the Telegraph letters page someone recommended a Swiss station with no ads. There was a choice of Classical, pop or Jazz. It wasn’t too bad but the pop was a bit Eurovision. On the plus side it prompted me to Google internet radio without ads – and there was Serenade Radio.
I tuned in and it was Sing Something Simple, and I was transported back to Sunday afternoon sightseeing drives from years ago. I loathed it then and my opinion hasn’t changed ,but earlier I put it on for my 82 year old mum and she was in Easy Listening Heaven!
For my part I have loved my week with Serenade Radio. Yesterday (Saturday) there wasn’t a single duff record and it was on from breakfast til a reluctant bedtime at midnight. Today I’ve been delighted to hear Noel Coward, Dinah Washington and the Andrews Sisters, three all time favourite artistes.
If I have any complaints it’s that it has stopped me playing the piano because I’m always wondering what’s going to be played next.
Thank you so very much for creating a station that is pure listening pleasure.
Serenade Radio on 4 September 2025
Thank you Ralph, although it has taken you a while we are pleased you eventually found us. Yes, Serenade launched in 2015 the brainchild of Andy Marriott. As I’m sure you have found out we have a lot of variety, more than some other channels provide. Please help spread the word, save others your journey!
Alison Brown on 3 September 2025
My life revolves around serenade radio and would NOT exist without it ! I mean it , it is the centre of my world and I adore all the music played and KEEP telling my friends to enhance their lives with the same . Toodle Pip Andy you are my reason to get up and go in the morning . XX

Love listening to your radio station in Melbourne, Australia but the last couple of days it is very static and not playing correctly sometimes disappearing altogether on my Google Nest. Can get other things on the device so not sure if there are any problems your end or whether it’s my end. Am disappointed as really love listening to your music.
Nick Hingley on 1 September 2025
Try checking out accessing the same stream on another device such as a laptop or tablet.
And, of course, the time-honoured trick is simply to turn off your device, leave it off for a few minutes, and then turn it back on. Often works wonders! (The device might just have become a bit addled.)
Andy Grahamme on 31 August 2025
Lovely programmes from Kevin Taylor to end the month. loved the “travel” themed prog yesterday and todays prog was a great way to wind down the weekend..the Vera Lynn track so good…and of course Kevins professional and informative presentation as always.
Nick on 31 August 2025
I’m really enjoying Mark Steyn at the moment. I’ve never listened to him before but left Alexa playing after Cindy finished. I love all the facts he gives us!
Fraser Sutherland on 31 August 2025
But Nick, no prejudice to the very great Cindy of course, but that’s like eating the white of an egg and leaving the yolk!
Suzy on 31 August 2025
I always laugh at Ed sharing his quirky nibbles with us, his devoted Dawn Choristers, but this morning the bacon nibbles were perfectly timed with my scrambled eggs. Thanks, Ed! x

Listening to the brilliant Stuart Linnell, whilst reading his book at the same time. It is like listen to the radio whilst an
audiobook is going off in my head as my brain is adding his dulcet tones as I read! Great show as ever Stuart.
Stuart Linnell on 30 August 2025
Thank you so much Karen, and thank you for reading the book. I hope you enjoy it.

Hi!
Top music. Top radio!
Pearl! 📻
Keep up the good work!
Greetings from Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Bernie on 27 August 2025
In Slovenia too, we have been faced with radio stations that play the same music from the 60s and 70s all the time for years. But that’s not ok. Commercial. It’s not ok.
So THANK YOU Serenade Radio! ❤️❤️❤️
Bernie on 27 August 2025
And it’s the same here in Central Europe. On radio stations… Except on public radio stations … ❤️❤️❤️

To Sonia Beldom: Hi Sonia- so nice to hear George Hamilton IV on your show tonight. I was lucky enough to meet him on a number of occasions; he really was a lovely bloke, and a great performer (as indeed is his son, GH V). Hope to hear more of George on your show.
Sonia Beldom on 28 August 2025
Thank you – yes, lots more of George Hamilton IV to come, so keep your ear peeled to Serenade. S x

Was listening to Paul Ruddock’s 6.00pm ‘Summer Sun’ show yesterday whilst cooking the evening meal. What a delightful hour of music with great links from Paul – the perfect late summer bank holiday wind-down following a day of sun and light breeze! Would like to hear it all over again on catch-up…
James Pickering on 29 August 2025
Thanks so much for telling us how much you enjoyed the programme, Peter. Paul was most flattered by your praise. What wouldn’t we give for that summer sun and light breeze now? Kind regards, James (producer).
Barbara Heathcote on 25 August 2025
Hi Andy, enjoyed the programme tonight, especially Vic singing in Italian and Three Wheels on my Wagon. Glad you played that as your bit of nonsense.

Thanks Jeff Owen for your Saturday morning broadcasts,
I just love the little stories that you seem to make so interesting from the newspapers I really find them bizarre and such fun you have such a professional outlook on peoples life’s and how they spend their time in all parts of the world in giving readers such crazy, crazy imaginations of their lifestyle such, such fun for me as a listener to Serenade.
It’s sheer top broadcasting and presentation .
Thanks Jeff long may you continue to give me such a terrific programme with good music and humour
👍😀

Thank you, Andy, for all your efforts to bring us this very special radio station and to all the wonderful presenters who give their time and knowledge to keep us entertained. Long may it last!
George on 16 August 2025
Little technical hitches such as this evening’s just make me realise how integral a part of life Serenade Radio is and how grateful I am for it’s existence.
Sometimes it’s easy to forget that the station is entirely run by volunteers and funded by donations, especially when one hears the superior quality output, far exceeding anything heard anywhere else!
Thank you Andy Marriott for all your efforts in keeping the station on air and also to everyone involved in SR for keeping the music playing and the chat friendly.
Nancy on 16 August 2025
My Saturdays are so scheduled that I usually miss the first 10 or more minutes of Steyn’s On The Town. Not so today – by some good fortune the program was late and I heard it in its entirety, Many thanks, entertainment gods!
Fraser Sutherland on 16 August 2025
Mark Steyn’s ‘On the Town’:
If this show was an example of breaking the iron-disciplined Steyn format, then screw the format. A show of unexpected twists and turns. Great Sinatra-Cole Porter Septet, great anecdotes, great Larry Adlerian name-drop: Steyn sitting between Lauren Bacall and Ali McGraw! ( God how I hate that Steyn guy. It’s so unfair!). After peak-Barbra Streisand’s ‘You Don’t Bring Me Flowers’ and the bitter-sweet ‘The Way We Were’ who’s to say that the Bergman duo, in the fullness of time, won’t be the real G.O.A.T?
And in a show of logic-defying highlights maybe Mighty Sparrow and Byron Lee and the Dragonaires ‘s rendition of Don Black’s lyrics to ‘Walk Away’ took the biscuit. Now that was unexpected. The whole thing was sheer pleasure. Roll on next week, same time, same place. Thanks Sensei Steyn. Thanks Serenade.
Andy Marriott on 16 August 2025
Hi Fraser,
Hopefully not at the same time next week! Back to 5pm all being well!
Nick Hingley on 16 August 2025
A great programme as always – learned many new things about songs I already knew well.
Fraser Sutherland on 17 August 2025
Nick I agree! One of the many great things about the show is how much one learns – and learns so enjoyably. Not only that but one ends up impatient for more. I’ve just listened to Roger’s ‘SoftFolkus’ – same thing!
Fraser Sutherland on 16 August 2025
Hello Andy,
Ten minutes delay; small price to pay for beauty!
Nick Hingley on 16 August 2025
If anyone is still getting silence instead of the stream then reload your page, app, etc.
Andy Marriott on 16 August 2025
Sorry for the problems with On the Town. Computers, arghhh! Programmes are now running 10 minutes late…
Nick Hingley on 16 August 2025
These things happen. Been there, done that! (My experience of computers is now a couple of months shy of fifty years…)
Anyway, silence used to mean a bit of a swell in the North Sea!
Andy Marriott, Station Manager on 16 August 2025
Thanks for that Nick, I needed a smile. You wouldn’t believe the number of abusive messages this generated!
Lots of folks alerting me to the problem, kindly but a few feeling really affronted that a free service had a glitch!
Edgar on 16 August 2025
Worked fine later. I didn’t think to look at the comments but for some reason I tried that after a few minutes, Good show.
Edgar on 16 August 2025
Where is “On the Town”?
Andy Marriott on 16 August 2025
I’m sure you mean: “I can’t hear On the Town, is there a problem?” I might ask you “Where is the help we need to keep this going?” But I wouldn’t be so rude.
Mark Sutherland on 16 August 2025
Steve James after playing Matt Monro’s I Love the Little Things asked if Tony Hatch wrote any other Eurovision songs. He wrote Tell Tale for the Brooks Brothers (1962) and I Won’t Let You Go for Kathy Kirby (1965), both lost out as the UK entry. Another enjoyable show this morning Steve.
Steve James on 23 August 2025
A belated thank you Mark, that saved me some homework! I didn’t know ‘Tell Tale’ was a Eurovision contender. In fact I don’t think I’ve played anything by the Brook Brothers yet, so I’ll dig out some of their records for a future spin.
Mark Eyre on 15 August 2025
Thanks Simon, for finding the copy of Central Park Parade, will bring back memories of the late, great John Dunn show.
Malcolm Turner on 14 August 2025
This is wonderful, I tune in for the first time today and fell instantly in love with it.
I have been looking for something like this for such a long time.
I can never thank you enough
Barbara Heathcote on 13 August 2025
Just listening to the quiet hour and thank you Jane for playing a Vic Damone song. Also Al Di La from Roman holiday with Troy Donahue and Suzanne pleshette . Al Martino had a hit with the song but I think I prefer the original from the film by Emilio Pericoli (had to cheat and look him up as forgotten his name)
Barbara Heathcote on 12 August 2025
Hi Andy you’ve just made my night. My Vic Damone but also Tony Martin and Andy Williams. All my fav artists. Thank you. I know Jack Jones is played often but have you ever played his dad Alan Jones singing Donkey Serenade? If you have sorry I missed it.
Nick Hingley on 12 August 2025
Just wondering if ‘Sukiyaki’ has been played today? It is one of the earliest songs I can remember.
I was reading a newspaper article about the world’s worst aeroplane disaster which occurred forty years ago today when a 747 crashed in Japan. Sadly, Kyu Sakamoto was amongst the victims.
Andrew Hunter on 12 August 2025
Hi. Just love The Seekers. Such beautiful harmonies and the voice of Judith Durham is fantastic!
Vanessa-Ann Dowsett on 12 August 2025
Thank you Andy for Jonathan and Darlene Edwards, they are so bad that it’s brilliant. Made my birthday morning x
Johnny Mac, A Little Night Music on 13 August 2025
Belated birthday greetings. I’ve got your choice for my artist of the week coming up soon too!
Johnny Mac, A Little Night Music on 29 August 2025
Hi Vanessa-Ann
I have your choice of Joe Brown as our artist of the week tomorrow morning from 3am!
Barry Williams on 11 August 2025
Listening to Andy tonight I thought his comment about commercial radio getting on his ‘Wick’ really struck a chord.
I recently spent a one hour journey with my son in his car. Of course he had the radio tuned to a well known commercial
station. After ten minutes I had to ask him to turn it off but instead he retuned to another couple of stations which were just as bad, thank goodness for Serenade ,which I tuned into immediately on my return home,…pure bliss!
Nick Hingley on 12 August 2025
My radio listening dates from the 1960s offshore pirates and Radio Luxembourg. The advertisements were an intrusion and a minor annoyance but understood as necessary to hear programming that wasn’t available elsewhere. On ILR there was originally a restriction on the number of minutes per hour but this would seem to have long gone along with the ban on sponsored programmes.
However, the major problem these days is the intense block booking of spots by a single advertiser. Listening to a station recently, the same ad was aired five times in an hour – as this started to become torture, I turned off. Of course, I could upgrade the technology to stream Serenade when driving – and it would probably triple the value of the car, too.
Suzy on 14 August 2025
Couldn’t agree more … Thank heavens for our Serenade Sanctuary away from weather forecasts that never apply to the skies above me, ‘selective’ news every half hour that I really don’t need to hear, travel reports about roads I’ll never travel and awful dumbed-down ads for stuff completely irrelevant to me and my life.
Suzy on 14 August 2025
P.S. Andy, please will you do Serenade TV, too?
Anthony Corsini on 11 August 2025
I just love listening to Mark Steyn and his incredible knowledge of the birth of great songs.I listen in bed to his programme.,far too short, then beggars canr be choosers.Thsnks Mark you have save many a sleepless night.Of course not forgetting the whole team of Serenade Radio. The only app yo make sure REAL music still exsisted.Thank you.

Doris Day Album of the Week…should be good. Released the year I was born. Crikey!😬
I suspect there can be very little of Doris I do not own within my own music library. Some are compilations others as they were released.
Another bonus being The Serenade music library does have many recordings I will never trace or be able to afford plus friendly voices.
Cheers

How great to have Simon back on the excellent Dinner at 8. Rushed home to catch the show…one of my Serenade faves
Simon, I feel I should be drinking a Dry Martini with an olive in it whilst listening to your show! Kind regards Tony

I try to arrange to sit down to my evening meal at 8pm on a Saturday and perhaps, for an hour, be transported to the days of Radio 390.
Simon McLean on 11 August 2025
Thank you – I feel I should be drinking a Dry Martini with an olive in it while presenting it, frankly!

Not feeling my best this evening but then I started listening to A Little Night Music and WOW what a great first hour of listening pleasure! Not dancing around like Karen but just smiling happily. Great program Johnny Mac!
Johnny Mac, A Little Night Music on 9 August 2025
Get well soon, Nancy. Serenade Radio is the perfect tonic, night and day!
Marcus from Michigan on 8 August 2025
That Neil Sedaka track really resonated and I agree with Sonia that the words are powerful. Liked the donut story too. Great shows on your station.
Sonia on 12 August 2025
Thank you Marcus -so nice to hear you’re enjoying Serenade in Michigan, the music and stories. Keep listening and spread the word.

Hi Andy, Couldn’t agree more about Sammy Davis Album of the Week, what a treat. Lovely to hear him singing softly, so different from what we normally hear. More please.
Ron Pearce on 6 August 2025
I can’t access John Hellings Jazz programme on Wednesday at 9.00 pm
Andy Marriott, Station Manager on 6 August 2025
Hi Ron,
I’m not sure how I can help. The website, phone app and Alexa are all working fine here!
How are you trying to listen?
Nick Hingley on 7 August 2025
I listened to John Hellings – never miss the programme – without problem* as it was broadcast yesterday evening but, of course, this doesn’t help you.
Your difficulty could be down to any of a few dozen reasons (or more), but in instances such as these, what would help is information as to how you were trying to, or normally, listen: phone app, internet radio, alexa wotsit, stream from website to computer, etc. Of course, if your internet service provider has an outage, several or none of these will work! However, perhaps whatever has happened has resolved itself.
* I was listening on a 16-year-old laptop computer which now uses the Linux operating system; driving a couple of nice though relatively cheap shelf speakers. (The internal battery is shot and so the laptop has to be plugged in to the mains if I want to listen for more than 15 minutes!)

Are you able to rebroadcast his/their last airing, and let us all know, that it is? I would love a heads up as to when the request may be granted and scheduled. I listen USA/EDT/EST Time. Sincerely, Thank You. I love BigBandSpecial as well !!! #MarkStyne )

Thank you Roger and producer Paul for another brilliant selection of Dance Band music and I do like a bit of Charlie Kunz he was such a favourite of my grandad lots of years ago.
Paul Ruddock on 3 August 2025
Thanks for your kind words David.
I know I’ve said this before but Roger and I have such a hoot choosing the music each week, you’ll notice dear old Charlie Kunz and The Casani Club Orchestra often feature (and rightly so) – they were a favourite of Roger’s Mum too!
With my best wishes
Paul
Roger Williams on 3 August 2025
Hello David
Your positive comments will spur us on to ever greater heights – my introduction to this music was in Liverpool where I first heard Charlie Kunz on my grandparents HUGE radiogram! There was a fair old selection of 78s too in their air raid shelter under the rockery in their garden, happy days!
David Small on 2 August 2025
Thank you Adrian Jackson for some wonderful music from the musicals and thank you for including music from Martin Guerre a much under rated musical in my opinion. I just love all the music from that show and yoour tracks tonight brought back many happy memories when I saw the show live many years ago .
Fraser Sutherland on 2 August 2025
Mark Steyn’s ‘On the Town’:
Gosh that was good. Every single minute from beginning to end. And what a truly lovely tribute to Cleo Laine. Absolutely nothing ‘awry’ in these 60 minutes. The programme never fails. I can’t wait to hear the whole thing again at 5 am tomorrow. Thanks Mark Steyn.
Nancy on 2 August 2025
I totally agree with you Fraser.
Mark Steyn on 4 August 2025
Thank you so much, Nancy and Fraser. There’s so much good music out there – which sometimes surprises me. But what’s even more surprising is that Serenade is the only place you can hear it.
Nick Hingley on 4 August 2025
I enjoy these programmes immensely as I learn something new each week – usually several new things – plus there’s always plenty of Sinatra. The comment about being on a judging panel with Benny Green was interesting as I often think about his Sunday afternoon Radio 2 programme when listening to ‘On The Town’. And Steve Race: I got some stick at junior school when the teacher went around the class and I said I liked his music. “I asked about music; not rubbish!” she snorted.
When I think back on all the carp I learned at high school
It’s a wonder I can think at all
Thanks, Paul Simon (Kodachrome)

The Cliff Adams Chorale – Take, oh take those lips away
Thanks, Steve James, for resolving something that, for many a year, has been bugging me whenever I hear this tune: Used in a 1960s Guinness advertisement!

Many thanks to Sean Usher for The Late Show, and to Johnny Mac for A Little Night Music. Fab! 👍👍

Thank you, Martyn. Our two progs will be celebrating three years on SR later this month and you’re one of diamond listeners.

Any chance of having Petula Clark as featured artiste some time in the future. Many thanks Johnny 👍

I’ve added Pet to the list, Martyn! Might be in November as the list gets longer!

Great show this morning Johnny Mac. Good to hear Paul Anka as the artist if the week . If someone had told me before today he had done a cover of the cure I would never have believed it !

Paul Anka’s 2005 album, ‘Rock Swings’, is well worth checking out, Karen.

Johnny’s show should at least be repeated, mystery years and all. But don’t take him away from my 8PM time slot!
Suzy on 2 August 2025
Ah yes, okay, Nancy, I can cope! zzzz
Nancy on 2 August 2025

Enjoying this lovely series The Great London Theatres and this week the second part of The London Palladium the story is so well told by Helen Stevens and brilliantly written by Neil Anthony my only complaint is that the programme should be 60 minuites and not 30 minuites long

Dave in London on 29 July 2025
Lovely tunes heard in recent days. Bob Hope and Shirley Ross, The Pattersons, Roger Whittaker, Nancy Wilson, Joy Nichols.
But I have to ask: that screech lady Gloria Wood. Has she gone away now, never to return? Her idea of ‘easy listening’ and mine don’t seem to coincide. ‘Hey Bellboy’ suggests a time before anaesthetics were invented.
Apart from that it’s all a jolly good listen, thank you.
Steve in Worcs. on 31 July 2025
It’s a completely bizarre thing, isn’t it! Would love to hear more of her work.
Phil on 28 July 2025
Gosh Simon, that Tony Harrison tune ‘Holiday in Davos’ you’ve just played on Music Box sounds just like one of those incidental music pieces Barry Gray wrote for TV in the 60s. Great atmospheric piece.
Simon McLean on 28 July 2025
Yes, I definitely see the Barry Gray similarities now you’ve pointed it out! It’s a lovely tune from a very obscure album, and I love having the chance to bring it to a (slightly) wider audience

“The world’s greatest ever broadcaster” – and then plays My Father Had a Rabbit.
What an absolute star you are, Mr. Marriott! I am, of course, in complete agreement, I have Ray’s autobiography as well as Alma’s (“Management” 😊) and his CD. (Didn’t know until recently he was born in Birmingham.)
I wonder what our overseas listeners thought if todays “Twaddle”! Thank you, as always.
Suzy on 28 July 2025
What a joy it was to wake up to Ray and enjoy his unique, off-the-wall, sense of humour and genuine warmth before heading off to work. I imagine a lot of us avid Serenade listeners were his fans.
David Yarnall on 1 August 2025
Suzy it was the highlight of my broadcasting career to do a couple of handovers to Ray during one of my periods on Radio 2. I also had a couple of chats with him in his studio and he was a wonderful guy and very encouraging.
I remember those handovers with great excitement and at the time I couldn’t believe I was doing them.
Suzy on 1 August 2025
Well, how lovely you shared those precious memories with us, David. Thank you. That’s what’s so special about Serenade, isn’t it … we’re one big family connected by our memories of radio’s glory days and nostalgic for the top quality music from back then. I’m with you most days and often overnight too, enjoying your smooth voice and ease of presentation.
Nick Hingley on 2 August 2025
It was getting up at the crack of dawn in the late-1970s that I became a devotee of Ray Moore’s early morning programme on Radio 2. Although bang in the target demographic, I had already grown out of Radio One and was now living in an area where there was no ILR; plus reception of 1500m Long Wave was solid whereas medium wave somewhat variable, especially in the hours of darkness.
Ray got moved around the schedule a bit and I even remember him doing a late night Sunday show for a while – a strange position for him when I consider it now – but mornings suited him the best and he made early rising a pleasure. However, I can’t say I ever took part in a bog-eyed jog!
I found him great company, and he has to be one of the all-time best presenters, if not the best, in his field. It is good to find that people that worked with him found him every bit as pleasant as his radio persona.
Sadly, Ray was taken from us far too early.
His autobiography ‘Tomorrow is Too Late’ is an excellent read.
Nick Hingley on 26 July 2025
Nice to hear two of England’s greatest composers on The Television Show: Vaughan Williams’ Sixth Symphony as used for ‘Family at War’, and then an extract from Elgar’s Cello Concerto turning up as the theme to ‘Paradise Postponed’, a drama production of which I know nothing. I wonder if there is programme that has used George Butterworth’s ‘The Banks of Green Willow’ – bound to be…
“Who the heck is Eileen Heckart?” I was asking exactly the same question, as I often do with these ‘special guest stars’, so I had to do a search. According to Wikipedia: ‘Anna Eileen Heckart (née Herbert; March 29, 1919 – December 31, 2001) was an American stage and screen actress whose career spanned nearly 60 years.’ In fact she has a much longer entry than does Carol Rossen – one of the earlier ‘special guest stars’ in one of the other themes.
At least three outings in this series for ‘Man In a Suitcase’ but you can’t have too much of possibly the best action theme music of all time. My first-year French teacher must have been a fan as about the only thing I can remember of his lessons is a reference to ‘Un homme dans une valise’.
à la nouvelle année…
Barbara Heathcote on 26 July 2025
Hi Andy, thank you for playing Sucu Sucu, bet you were singing along with me 🤣. Already got one for the next series. Going to miss the programme on Saturday nights,
Barry Williams on 26 July 2025
Have really enjoyed “The TV Show” series with Mr Marriot, (Always good company). It makes me realise having listened on a weekly basis how much TV I must have watched all those years ago, I recocognised nearly every theme!
Thanks for a great series
Steve in Worcs. on 26 July 2025
Just wanted to echo Barry’s fine words of praise. I would imagine there is a very great deal of work putting the programme together, and it is very much appreciated. Being well struck in years, I remember seeing most of these as a kid, especially The Baron (Steve Forrest, brother of Dana Andrews), Man in a Suitcase (Richard Bradford was superbly “unconventional”), but a long standing favourite was Name of the Game – only 1 minute but superbly evocative. A shame they don’t release the series on DVD, even though it was thought “plodding” by most viewers at the time. Great job Mr.M. – thank you!
Nick Hingley on 27 July 2025
Sets of the perhaps lesser-remembered TV series of our era were being steadily tracked down and formatted for DVD by a company called Network. Most disappointingly, Network went out of business last year. Unfortunately, the DVD market is dying as the world is moving to online, but I prefer DVDs as it is too easy for online material to be ‘adjusted’ for the modern age (or, indeed, removed) by Winston Smith and his colleagues. (I prefer material as the author wrote it, and like to think that I am grown up enough to understand that some writing may be ‘of its time’; and to make my judgements accordingly.)
I have been fortunate to find Network series of Danger Man, Man In A Suitcase, and a few others. My last new purchase was their giant box of the complete series of black and white Maigret with Rupert Davies in the lead role – possibly Network’s last major release.
Technically, some of the transfers won’t cut the mustard on Cinemascope wall-mounted screens* popular today, but, hey!, when Maigret was being broadcast our household was watching it on a BBC only 12-inch Vidor telly, which often required a tweak of the horizontal hold control on the back of the cabinet…
* I don’t possess one – the best I can muster is an old Hitachi 24″ flat screen. (Certain members of the Serenade parish are likely to be able to view on CRT sets contemporary to the productions.)
Steve in Worcs. on 27 July 2025
Thanks, Nick. Yes I was aware of Network, a shame they ended- their range was prodigious. I’ve generally struck lucky in charity shops, and scored with the full set of Blackadder, “Yes, Minister”, and Band of Brothers in the last year or so. Hope springs eternal that I’ll find the full set of Hadleigh (new, it’s £95!) or Strangers (with the enigmatic Don Henderson). There was so much quality television to watch back in these days, and when you consider we didn’t get a 4th terrestrial channel until 1982….!
I am very much with you on DVD ownership. I gave up television 20 years ago, as I felt that I had seen the best I ever could by then, and time has proven me right. They had started not editing, but butchering films for television viewers, and I’m something of a purist (as the director or studio intended, please!). Streaming would be no different.
Here’s to trudging charity shops in the hope of finding a nice boxed set. 😊
Nick Hingley on 27 July 2025
Indeed, Steve, I am a regular trawler of charity shops and I found a Band of Brothers set on a visit to Worcester last year. I didn’t pay top whack for Maigret (Ebay) but feared it was such a late release that I would have to wait a long time to find one in a charity shop. My local charity shops can’t give away DVDs. Often they are three or five for a quid, and one puts them on display on a table outside – I think they are happy if some get stolen! There is an awful amount of dross but gems regularly turn up.
I keep an eye on Ebay for things of interest to me as they occasionally crop up.
I watch so little live TV that my recent licence renewal almost seems pointless, especially as my radio listening is dominated by Serenade – currently listening to Roger’s always excellent Soft Folkus – and stations that stream from far away. Perhaps such providers better deserve my licence spend – but let’s not get too far into controversial territory.
I love a wallow with an old programme on DVD. The past is a foreign country: and they do indeed do things differently there; but it’s for an hour or so it’s almost within touching distance once more.
Chris Hitchcock. Dublin . on 26 July 2025
Mark what a lovely chat you had with Alan Bergman, a gentleman of the old scholl . It revealed the gentle and generous side of Sinatra and his love for composers. His suggestion to Tony to record “How do you keep the music Playing” showed his admiration for his friend . Tony has made it his own closing number always leading to a standing innovation. You have been very lucky to have interviewed all 0f the great composers and in sharing those memorable moments with the listeners of Serenade Radio. I realise that most have passed on to the Great Concert Hall in the Sky. Please continue to share these moments with us for as long as you able to.
Mark Steyn on 27 July 2025
Thank you, Chris. I can’t claim to have much in common with Sinatra, other than that I was married to Ava Gardner for a couple of years. But, aside from that, we did both love songwriters and arrangers – and I so admire the way that, on stages all over the world, he gave credit to so many of them over the years. Wish more singers would do that.

PHILIP HALL on 26 July 2025
It was so refreshing to get constant dreamy jazzy music, but now I find when ever I tune in it seems to be eighties pop songs. Have you changed your music model,or am I tuning in at the wrong time. If so could you advise me as to the best time to listen. This is not a rant,as l used to love your station and I want it to continue. Thanks, Philip Hall.
Andy Marriott, Station Manager on 26 July 2025
Hi Philip,
I would suggest that you are tuning in to our ONLY pop show, Saturday mornings 10-12. Jeff Owen presents some of the more gentle songs from the 60s, 70s and very occasionally the 80s. Virtually every other hour of every day is pop-free!
Andy Grahamme on 26 July 2025

I always loved Gordon Lightfoot’s voice and style. I attended his concert about 10 years ago and he was in such a ruined state physically and vocally – putting him onstage was an act of elder abuse. Ah well, here at SR he is forever young and talented!

Gordon was such a wonderfully talented tunesmith. Even Bob Dylan admired him!
