The Billy Cotton Band Show will bring back memories! How about some Uncle Mac Children’s Favourites & Housewives Choice and Workers Playtime too,oh and could Sing Something Simple on Sundays last an hour as half hour is too short. Love all the old programmes I grew up with on the Light Programme as it was back then. Love Serenade Radio & I’m so glad you don’t have adverts like commercial radio.

up to recent times we had a splendid radio programme from Radio Lancashire hosted by Gerald Jackson called Unforgettable which played a similar genre to yourselves. This programme was axed by the BBC after being a success for nearly 20 years and whilst I understand that thier problems were caused by this wretched government I still agree with your mission statement that they kind of music I like has disappeared when presenter have died or retired no Dewi Griffiths, Ronnie Hilton, Alan Keith, and many more So I was delighted to find you I will recommend you and am now asking for my licence fee to be rescinded, officially because I am over 75, but really because the BBC no longer represent my taste and consequently no longer value for money and when that is approved I will share it with you, because having volunteered in our community for 20 years I know how tigh.t money can be

How lovely to hear ‘and the glory of the lord’ on Ed”s show this morning. I am constantly amazed by the diversity of music played on this little gem of a show.

Thank you, Arthur. Glad you enjoyed the Handel chorus, it tootles along with a nice bounce doesn’t it. Shortly will adding some new ‘gems’ (I hope) to the Dawn Chorus music library. Stay warm and extra mugs of coffee all round for dawn choristers today I think!

There are so many genres catered for on Serenade Radio. Perhaps you might occasionally feature selections by brass bands as many Radio 2 listeners are still missing programmes like Listen to the Band. I enjoy tracks by big bands that feature excellent brass players but as Christmas approaches you might play some festive music by say a Salvation Army band or a similar line-up.

Why now. My expensive internet radio won’t access internet radio. It could but the manufacturer’s partner has started asking for a monthly subscription fee.

And without you cannot access any internet radio. So the radio is now a doorstop.

Now to decide if I pay up. Look at smart speakers or some other alternative. Simplistic. It seems I can buy two and set them up so one plays the left sounds and the other the right. Creating stereo.

Then other option seems to be you buy one and with the right cable relay the sound through PC speakers. A hi-fi.

Ironically I think that I can connect a smart speaker to this obsolete radio and play it through its speakers.

    I hope I am back soon…missing you.

(My phone is ready to die too)

Temporary reprieve. Just to get my hopes up. Why did I try the radio 24 hours later. Everything is working again. Even limited use would work for me if some features are withdrawn. Happy for now.

Dick Fisher just played “The show is Over” and he couldn’t find who wrote it , it was Petula Clark , one of the many songs she wrote

    1
    • Dick Fisher on 29 November 2023

Thank you David. Quite often the internet will suggest that a performer actually wrote a song they’re associated with, so I treat such info carefully! I wasn’t aware of Pet’s songwriting skills, but your comments have inspired me to do some more reading about her career.

      • David Bownes on 29 November 2023

She wrote or co-wrote over 75 songs , some were by herself , some with others such as Tony Hatch. A lot were in French, she also put English lyrics to French and German songs and vice verse, a very talented lady and a lovely person
Really enjoy your show and all the information surrounding the songs and singers that I never knew

I have just listened to the repeat of Dance Band Days and can confirm that The Seekers did indeed record ‘Open Up Them Pearly Gates’. It is on either the B side of ‘I’ll Never Find Another You’ or ‘Morningtown Ride’ (I rather think the former) though I would have to dig out my box of 45s to confirm which. Actually, it’s not surprising that The Seekers should have recorded it as they started out as a gospel-cum-folk style group – the turning point in their popularity being their involvement with Tom Springfield.

    2
    • Alan Jowett on 2 December 2023

One reason that The Seekers put traditional folk songs such as Open Up Them Pearly Gates on their B sides was that by lifting the arrangement under their own names they earned royalties which would be the same as for the the composer of the A side.

To Adrian Jackson – I expect many have mentioned it, by now. Alan Perry is of course a pseudonym for the great Ernest Tomlinson- founder of the Light music Society and composer of the classic ‘Little Serenade’ plus over 200 other lovely pieces of light music, under his own and other nom-de-plumes

Another great Soft Folkus… Roger Williams has really captured the mood for a relaxing Sunday evening. I know nothing about the folk scene but I do enjoy this show immensely. Thanks.

    • Roger Williams on 27 November 2023

Ian, that is such a lovely comment! You may find this strange but I have an immense amount of difficulty defining what folk music is. I’m very much guided by my own ears and a fair bit of the show goes beyond what many would count as folk. I do try and create a certain mood on a Sunday night and I’m sure I don’t always get it right. Comments like yours meanso much, especially as I sometimes play music that no-one else will. Roger

Being old enough to remember the ‘Golden Age of Light Music! on radio and the regular live broadcasts by light orchestras and ensembles, I was bound to regard Adrian Jackson’s series “Evergreen” as essential listening.
On Friday, he played us a piece by Alan Perry (perhaps an unfamiliar name to many listeners) Well, Adrian might be interested to know that “Alan Perry” was the pseudonym for one of light music’s “legends” – Ernest Tomlinson!

Ernest once told me that he used the name on pieces which (he felt) fell below his usual standard! Actually I thought that some of them were amongst his best! I mentioned to him a particular favourite “Mississippi Melody”. He responded “Oh – that was easy!”. I responded “for you, maybe- but most people would not know where to start!”
    Give it a try-Adrian!

      Hello Mark,

A fellow radio fan here, and you’ve mentioned the names of Titans there that I loved listening to😎 Did you catch the Radio Heroes series of 6 programmes in the Summer, presented by Peter Tomlinson? I missed two of them, and unfortunately, the station licence doesn’t allow for a ‘catch-up feature’ (as I understand it), so I would love to hear a repeat! There is talk of a second series. What a station this is! 😎

There will be a Radio Heroes Christmas Special on Christmas day at 5pm. It will feature all of the ‘heroes’ of series one in festive mood.
Series one will be repeated on Thursday evenings at 9.30 beginning on January 4th.
Series two is planned for later in 2024.

We all present our programmes from the comfort of our homes, in some cases sat up in bed!
Being funded by donations we could never afford premises and all that posh studio equipment.

Lately. I have taken to an Armistice ceremony that is very low key. But holds a lot of meaning and history.

I drawn to it and feel a connection to my Mum and Dad. It is performed close to where the UK railways were said to have begun. And George Stephenson and Timothy Hackworth lived.

Afterwards we had coffee and a chat. And I was surprised to be invited to have a whisky and toast Absent Friends.

I enjoy many of the programmes and presenters that are broadcast on Serenade Radio. In particular, however, a real favourite is that of the Andy Marriott Programme. Whilst I enjoy his whole show I do look forward to the 8.30 slot. Twaddle etc. However I haven’t heard, at least, for some time the wonderful recording of Joyce Grenfell as a school teacher with all that that entailed, I should be very grateful to hear this once again. I have just been reading the many tributes to my great friend and erstwhile radio colleague Brain Savin. For those of you who didn’t catch my programme yesterday I said that we paid our final respects to Brian on Thursday afternoon in a packed crematorium in Solihull outside Birmingham. Brian was a man of eclectic musical tastes, he especially loved the music from the great American Popular Songbook which this radio station keeps very much alive: a radio station Brian helped to bring into being nearly 10 years ago. We entered the auditorium to the sounds of “Soave sia il vento” from Cosi Fan Tutte and left to the strains of the Beach Boys and “God Only Knows”. I ended my show with Ella and “East of The Sun, and West of The Moon” One of his favourite artists singing one of his favourite songs. He is now at peace. Thank you Brian.

      Anne,
Its all to do with the clocks going back the hour. The first transmission at midday is three hours but the repeat would need to be four hours long so an hour of music is inserted.

Then when its possible to resume and the times match up the programme starts again.
I kept falling asleep earlier in the day so I have been listening overnight but I often do. 😊

Dear Serenade Radio Team, We listen to the station most of the day finding it ideal being free from news, weather reports and painful adverts, however not advert free completely when connecting with the smart speaker, most of the time the first thing we endure is an advert for another radio station and then two adverts to follow. I realise that for the rest of the day there are no more unless it is for some reason disconnected and when it comes back on again the aforementioned are included for the first few minutes. Is this normal please? I usually mute the sound until i know they are finished. I would appreciate your feedback on this matter but other than that, Serenade Radio is the best thing since sliced bread (so long as it’s wholemeal!!!)

As someone with a lifetime passion for light music, I am enjoying Adrian Jackson’s “Evergreen” every Friday at 9.00pm. Last week he played a track from Sydney Thompson’s Old Time orchestra, which broadcast for many years. Adrian might be interested to know that, whilst Thompson eloquently presented his radio programmes and organised his orchestra, he did not actually conduct his musicians- as he was a championship dancer – but not a musician. That task fell to Louis Voss for many years and subsequently to Leon Young and Ronald Hanmer – all familiar names to radio listeners of the period. For some reason this fact was rarely mentioned, either on air, or in the Radio Times. I once said to a now deceased producer that someone as distinguished as Louis Voss must have been irked by this – but I was told “he was too much of a gentlemen to complain!”
I must say that, having met many conductors of the era, the light music profession was abound with ‘gentlemen’ !

Keep up the good work Adrian!

Hi Andy, great programme tonight as always, thank you for for Vic Damone ❤️. John Gary and Arthur Prysock are new to me. Don’t know where you find them. David Whitfield was a regular on the radio growing up and mum’s favourite singer.

Edgar -Music While You Work never had a DJ. It was a twice-daily programme of uninterrupted dance or light music which ran for 27 years without a break – and was subsequently revived several times There were two daily editions – usually broadcast ‘live’. What you were listening to wasn’t a CD – it was a half-hour broadcast from the Maida Vale studios given by one of hundreds of musical combinations utilised over the years. Glad you liked it!

Thank you for rebroadcasting “Steyn’s Song of the Week,” every Thursday…I never miss it and that’s not because I didn’t listen to Sunday’s regular broadcast, although it’s a nice convenience to have on the off chance I do miss it…I just enjoy getting a double dose of such excellent and educational programing even, or especially if, I’ve already heard it before…It helps to keep my bellicosity in check…I hope you keep its archival rebroadcast for as long as you can as I don’t expect Mark to adopt, or adapt, to another producer…Hoping this electron finds its destination, I remain grateful…

My usual Sunday Evening with Serenade. Really enjoying Soft Folkus in its new extended slot (still missing David Corbett but pleased there is a new light music show on Fridays to take up the mantle). However, tonight’s show was par excellence with two Fairport tracks, Ralph McTell, Cregson & Collister, Gordon Lightfoot, James Taylor and other gems; but that first track really stopped me in my tracks and got me thinking: “What the heck have we got here? Don’t know this at all… It sounds like a Robert Kirby arrangement…” And then the back announcement. I have not heard of Chris Brain but his work certainly needs further investigation. Stunning.
I said stopped me in my tracks: well it would have done had I not already been sitting down and reading a book about Nick Drake. (I have been battling through the latest biography and the first written with the blessing of his sister Gabrielle Drake. A compelling read but the later chapters make for very hard reading.)
Anyway, a great show from Roger – and I enjoy Dance Band Days too. Stuff we don’t get anywhere else these days…

Looks like it might be ‘What’s New’, which appears to be a vocal version of a Herb Alpert tune – is that the one?

      0
        • Mark Steyn on 7 October 2023

That’s right: “So What’s New?” John Pisano, who was playing guitar with Herb at the time, wrote it as an instrumental. Peggy Lee heard it, liked it, and put a cute lyric to it. Max’s version is pretty good, but I have no idea why they mistitled it on the album.

Mark I am praying for your health and favorable resolution in your legal issues. I so enjoyed the incredible Song of the Week featuring Strangers in the Night. I marvelled at the hours of research, writing and editing involved. The incredibly woven narration and variety of selections amazed…and amused. Of all versions have you heard Billy May’s 1966 Billy May Today album? My wife nearly leaves the house when I play his Strangers in the Night at high volume. God Bless…..Paul from Ohio

Adding to the confusion there’s the Burke/Haggert standard that was the title song on Linda Ronstadt’s What’s New album with Nelson Riddle. Her manager and label didn’t want to do it but she insisted and it led to three well received albums.

One of my favourite programmes on Serenade Radio is Dinner at Eight on a Saturday evening. I would like to ask about the theme music used for the intro and outro. Is it something from the depths of the copyright-free library, or a commercial recording? Either way, please could someone tell me what it is called. The weekend line-up on Serenade is just superb; I could be back at my parents’ house in Ilkeston in the 1970s and 80s. Many thanks.

I have made a regular date with Dinner at Eight for a long time now. I often time my dinner for 8pm on a Saturday – a bit of preparation going on during Roger Williams’s show which I also enjoy very much.
I have been wondering about the theme tune so thanks for resolving that mystery.
I recall that many moons ago there was a Dinner at Eight programme from Radio 390 from Red Sands Fort which had a similar music format to Serenade Radio (though I have to confess I was a Radio Caroline South fan in those days!).

I was sorry to hear of the death of Brain Savin. I did some freelance work at BRMB during the mid-1980s and it was Brain who recruited, trained and mentored me. He was personable, affable, a great proponent of local radio and always determined to bring a professional approach to what was, at the time, a relatively young and sometimes chaotic medium. And, with his weekly Country Music show, Brian helped to widen the definition of the genre and include artists from beyond the confines of Nashville – a man ahead of his time and a man for all times. RIP.

Thank you, Pepe. I listened to today’s show (“Over the Rainbow”), which I hadn’t heard since its original airing, and I noticed a dozen subtle tweaks Brian had taken the trouble to do and which would never even occur to most people. I do love listening to the Dawn Chorus on a Saturday and Sunday… Worth waking up for on non working days (although my husband gets a bit fed up with the sunday 6am alarm ) …but why is there no Ed bio on the presenters page? The ‘new boys’ Vic and Adrian have a bio. But no Ed. Thank you for playing adiemus again today Ed. I never get fed up listening to that.

I am sorry about Brian Savin’s passing. I think others have said what I probably would.
I have found an informative piece about Brian. His long career and quotes from his Serenade Radio colleagues on a reliable website that talks of the radio business but I won’t post the link. I suspect that will not be acceptable. But I do hope Andy Marriott may find a way to put a link somewhere for others to see where it will be OK.

Just listened to the Crooner’s Club. Thank you for playing the great crooner Vic Damone ❤️
Please add his photo to the others at the top. Another crooner who is very rarely played is Tony Martin. Apologies if you have done but I’m a new listener.

      Barbara,
Your comment allows me to say how much I enjoy John Walton’s Crooner’s Club. So much music squeezed into an hour. I was going to say good music. But all of the music on Serenade Radio is😊

John is having a break from presenting(doing exciting things)but I so welcome a replay of these programmes on the station. They still sound fresh. And who would know that they are not new.

The music never ages and the presentation is so informative and easy. Looking forward to rest of what remains to air.

Thank you for your enthusiasm and appreciation, Anthony. I agree that the music from the Serenade Radio library never grows old. It’s still very encouraging, however, that you’re looking forward to the rest of this season of repeats! I hope you enjoy it.

I’m a copywriter who writes radio commercials. I first met Brian in his BRMB days. What a producer! I followed him to Savin Productions. I remember him sprinkling magic onto every commercial I wrote. We’d stay in the studio debating passionately about sfx and intonation for hours. The results were always best of class. And award winning too. I adored working with Brian. Even though many years ago, my memories are like yesterday. Dear Brian, it was a pleasure and an honour to be in your company. With love…

I am desperately sad to hear the news of Brian Savin’s passing.
I remember Brian right from the start of BRMB and regularly listened to his late show once the station extended its hours. I always enjoyed the features and interviews that he did on BRMB – a lot of it necessary due to ‘needle time’ restrictions but very entertaining and informative.
And then, astonishingly, the biggest chunk of half a century on I found myself listening to Brian on Serenade in the same time slot. In between there was the stint at the much-missed Saga Radio.
All through Brian’s voice never changed and he sounded as young to me on Serenade as he did all those years ago on BRMB; and latterly he did such a brave performance to keep his show going in the face of a debilitating illness. The superb Song of the Week and more recently we have had the excellent Radio Legends series produced by Brian. I do hope there will be a means to have some more of these shows.
My sincere condolences to Brian’s friends and family.
Rest in Peace Brian. Thank you for helping bring this oasis of a station to fruition and may you find oodles of Ray Conniff in the great beyond.

Thank you Peter Tomlinson, Neil Anthony and Brian Savin for another wonderful ‘Radio Heroes’ celebrating the late, and much-missed, Desmond Carrington. His Sunday programme was a ‘must listen’ for me in the same way that John Walton, and his ‘Musical Cavalcade’ – with the same easy-going and warm presenting style as Desmond – has been in recent years on Serenade Radio. I hope very much you’ll be commissioning another series of ‘Radio Heroes’.

    7
    • Peter Tomlinson on 3 September 2023

      Hi Andrew and David,

Please see my response to Arthur and Anthony below. Thank you both for your kind comments, they are very much appreciated. The real heroes behind this series are Neil and Brian though. Mr Marriott has approached me to narrate a second series, which I would love to do, but no dates have been fixed so far. Advance notice will be forthcoming when there is positive news. Next week in the last of the present series Radio Heroes will be featuring Jack Jackson who revolutionised the art of playing records in the face of much opposition from Auntie BBC ! Hope you can tune in.

      3
      • Neil Anthony on 3 September 2023

I’m thrilled by all the positive comments about Radio Heroes. Huge thanks must go to Mr Marriott for having the courage to green-light the series (from, as Johnny Mercer might have described me, a broadcasting neophyte). To Brian for his expertise and guidance and to Peter for his wonderful narration. As Peter mentions, this has very much been a labour of love. As someone who grew up with Alan and Benny and the other heroes and for someone who remembers Radio 2 when it knew what it was doing (to borrow Andy’s words), it has been an absolute joy too. Thanks to everybody who has listened and enjoyed the series. And keep listening. The best is yet to come!

          Hello Neil,

I’d just like to add my ‘voice’ to the chorus of appreciation and deep gratitude for the series.

Sadly, due to one ‘extended lunch’ and oddly-timed phone / internet calls , I have missed chunks or even whole episodes of this fabulous series, which has featured some of my favourite all-time broadcasters. Hopefully, the station will broadcast them again, if the licence allows?

As for a potential series 2, I would love to know that that is planned, and I have a solution to make sure I don’t miss any. Really looking forward to the last one, I vaguely remember Jack Jackson, such is the distance of time.

Once again, “thank you so much” to you and anyone connected with the series, and as always to Serenade Radio itself, for this wonderfully warm and hugely respectful series – the kind of radio that doesn’t exist anywhere else at all.

I have been particularly looking forward to today’s Radio Heroes as i was a big fan of Desmond Carrington ‘s radio show, and it did not disappoint. It was lovely to hear his voice again. Hearing Peter Tomlinson describe the show and the variety of good music he played… makes me realise his output and the sound of his show was not dissimilar to programmes we hear on SR. He said of his listeners he ‘doesnt talk at them he talks to them’ and again that is just like the presenters of SR. Thankyou for devoting one of the shows to this wonderful man and for continuing his radio legacy.

    6
    • Anthony Parkin on 3 September 2023

Arthur…you said so much of what I planned to say about Desmond. All Time Greats. The Radio Heroes series and those behind them. Serenade Radio and its presenters and music policy.

      Have I missed anyone out?

I became extremely nostalgic today. Memories of Mum and Dad. My younger self. Laughingly with Desmond’s long stay at Radio 2. I was the only one remaining.

Desmond’s attitude to the variety of music and being able to mix so many styles matches my own music library. It was much what I did myself for approx on hospital radio. How I tried to make that station sound. And had others come to me to answer questions of music they were unfamiliar with. Supply music they did not have.

It is why Serenade Radio. Its presenters deserve to succeed. And hopefully will be around for many years to come.

Its doing what I cannot see any other UK station is managing to as a domestic station.

And with the changes coming to BBC local radio(that is mainly the news and local content)being taken away. And finally the few specialist music programmes often again presented by once well known presenters on national BBC radio. Now veteran broadcasters they will be lost too.

Serenade radio is ever more precious. And we need to get it as much publicity as possible.

Finally I feel like saying it could be seen as a way to carry on Desmond’s legacy.

      2
    • Peter Tomlinson on 3 September 2023

      Hi Arthur,
Thank you for your kind comments about Radio Heroes and in particular the Desmond Carrington programme. The series has very much been a labour of love especially for Brian and Neil. Andy Marriott is I believe planning a second series and hopefully this will see the light of day. It strikes me that there is something odd about the radio broadcasting world today that here we are on Serenade Radio, with next to no budget at all, every presenter giving their time and experience completely free, doing the work the BBC should be doing with all their financial and archive resources. Anthony thank you for all your comments too. So much positive response is not only most welcome but it has done much to cheer up Brain Savin who, as most of you know, is not too well these days.

Geoff Owen I enjoy very much but has just come out with a load of twaddle about Dusty Springfield issuing 9 singles that failed before her first hit I only want to be with you.She had been with the springfields who had several hits and a couple of non-hits but the transition to hit making solo performer was immediate!

    0
    • Jeff Owen on 2 September 2023

      Hello Eric.
I knew there was something wrong with that as I was saying it! It wasn’t quite right.
Dusty Springfield had recorded nine demo songs to try and launch her solo career, but none were deemed suitable as the guaranteed success that they wanted, until I Only Want Be With You came along. So even though she’d recorded the songs, none were released as singles, until the big one.
Well spotted! Thanks for listening. Glad you enjoy it.

Just heard Des on your program, here is an anecdote from the days when I worked with him in Jersey Channel Islands 1976! “Des, was so well loved by absolutely everyone. He was a joy to work with, he was talented, so much fun, positive, enthusiastic, kind and a total professional.”
I worked with Des in Jersey Channel Islands, summer season 1977. One of the nicest people I have ever met. I used to sell his LP”s for him in the foyer. I had a sign made saying “Recommended by Morecombe and Wise” with a cut out of them behind me. He thought it was hilarious!!!!!

I was introduced to Serenade Radio by my old friend Mark Steyn. Well, what I mean is… he’s a man who says what I want to say but with panache and education. I was saddened when GBNews turned on him for expressing the views of the masses; I was worried when we heard of his health problems; I understand it’s difficult to be Mark Steyn and remain calm when passion is your trademark, be it songs, singers, politics. Mark Steyn may you continue to be an inspiration to us oldies with no voice, and may you continue to educate us all about the music we all love. Take it easy.

Jane, Love your programme! Particularly loved your first choice yesterday: Sir Harry singing “On with the motely” from Pagliacci. Wonderful! I have often wondered why you and your colleagues don’t play more opera pops. Can I suggest something(s) from David Hughes’s lovely album “Songs You Love”. Serenade do play him on occassion, but not often enough for my liking. He was a wonderful singer, now sadly missed, and it would marvelous to hear him every now and then. Jon

Just catching up on the Dick Fisher show as i was too busy at work this morning to listen ( sorry)… I heard Madeleine Peyroux a little while ago. I think she is great and with a pretty unique style amongst modern singers. Thank you Dick and Serenade Radio for playing her.

    Hi Peter
Listening to your superb show this afternoon, Thought you wouldn’t mind me correcting something , there are two songs called Walk On By you rightly said it was by Burt Bacharach but the one you played was written by Kendall Hayes, a hit for Leroy Van Dyke in 1961, the song was covered by over 80 other singers . The Bacharach song was a hit in 1964 for Dionne Warwick and has been covered by over 800 artists . It is reckoned to be one of the most perfect pop songs ever written .
Really love the show , perfect listening for a sunny Sunday afternoon

      Hi David,
I’m always open to correction, thank you very much. Good to hear from you at least I know I have one listener! I have been doing this show for over 2 years now, ever since Andy Marriott asked me to sign up back in 2014. It took me 7 years to take him up on his offer since I was never a professional spinner of records like so many of my colleagues on Serenade Radio. But I really enjoy the music I play and hopefully something that is the real me comes across even when I do get some things wrong or perhaps because I get things wrong!!

Well, could have fooled me, Peter! In fact, you did 😃, I was convinced you were a seasoned “DJ”, as that’s how you sound. An impeccable selection of music, and wonderfully warm and individual broadcasting style, like all of your colleagues.

The radio heroes programme about hubert gregg was fascinating . I remember hearing him on the radio but i wasnt that familiar with him and never realised he had done so much. And i definitely didnt know he had written maybe it’s because I’m a londoner… The words of which i apparently still know from my damcing school days as i was having a good sing a long yesterday. Thank you Peter. Looking forward to Benny Green next week.

      Hi Karen,
Apologies for being so late in replying but my responses somehow got lost in the ether. I too knew all the words to “Maybe It’s Because I’m A Londoner” at a very early age even though I am a Bristolian. Hubert Gregg was a fascinating character and he gauged the mood of this country and his beloved city exactly right when he wrote “I’m Going To Get Lit Up When The Lights Go On In London” Not many like him around these days more’s the pity!

        Hi Peter,

Great news! Benny Green – wonderful! Sunday afternoons at 2:00pm, “Good afternoon” followed by the opening bars of That’s Entertainment!, heralding an hour of the exploration of the Great American Songbook and their writers.

In my Facebook days, I was connected with his son, Leo, also a fine saxophone player and great radio broadcaster (chip off the old block!), he was so friendly, and he accepted all of the tribute messages for his dad very graciously.

For me, Serenade Radio is one of the blessings in life. Thank you all.

I’d like to add my voice of appreciation for the wonderful ‘Radio Heroes’ series. Some of the Heroes were just distant memories but I feel that they’ve been brought back to life. Brilliantly researched, produced and narrated – that’s what radio should be all about.

      Hi Chris
It is so heartening to get so many positive comments on Radio Heroes, thank you for yours. For all those involved it has been a labour of love to remember in the medium of radio those who in the past did so much for the medium itself. Apart from my colleagues on Serenade Radio I can’t think of many of the same quality these days!

Very appropriate for a 12 year old. 🙂 I wonder if i knew at the time what i was singing about. I was a bit naive back then i probably thought ot was for a picnic😂

How long have I been listening to Serenade. Not long enough.
Computers down. That need replacing or repairing.

And this old phone that is ready to fail.

But I had an internet radio in a box for perhaps 4 years.

I dug it out. And got it to work. I suspect I have been listening from perhaps some of the lockdowns.

But now the shock. Have I really been listening to Sean Usher and Johnny “Mac” McAtasney for a year.
Where has that year gone. OK congratulations to you both. And here’s to hopefully another. Nay many more.

Hi Paul, yes, Percy Parslow’s Hamster Farm. It’s on the album “The Amazing Adventures Of The Liverpool Scene” Andy Roberts was a student in Liverpool who could really play the guitar and this appealed to Adrian Henri, Mike Evans and the others who couldn’t! It’s a bit soppy but rather charming isn’t it? Thank you for listening.

Thankyou for the Alan Dell tribute. My late mother was a onetime pianist for the Ivy benson band and I was raised on fabulous jazz and swing despite being born in the 60’s ! We would always listen to Alan on sunday afternoons. I have to confess that on hearing the familiar refrains of ‘Thats all’ I did shed a few tears but thats the power of music to evoke memories. Love the station, my only gripe is that its not available on DAB radio but maybe one day ?

      Hi Mike,
Thank you for those kind words. You write about tears coming when listening to the Alan Dell programme, I have to admit that tears come all too readily to my eyes when I hear songs my late wife Ali loved played on Serenade Radio. Jane Markham played Acker Bilk’s “That’s My Home” this morning and the eyes moistened as they did when I played ” Memories Of You” in my afternoon show. Next week Hubert Gregg.

Thanks everso to new man Vic Groves, settling impressively well into Sunday lunchtime. The contextual info which Vic provides (first sung by… recorded in…) is welcome, spreading extra marmalade on the lunchtime toast and showing us that the music has meaning for him. Those country music songs at 1.30pm and 2.30 are a welcome extra. I wonder if Mr Marriott of this parish might allow Vic a country spot at 1pm and 2pm too. As that lady at the El Morocco tea rooms once said, it does you good to have a fling occasionally.

Hi Dave. Thanks very much for the feedback. I’m pleased you’re enjoying the programme. I love the music that Serenade plays and thoroughly enjoy the research involved in finding the background information. Sometimes the marmalade mighr be Marmite to some!! It took me a couple of seconds to understand the final second but, as I love the Goon Show and Peter’s other work, I realised it was “Four square on the Northern Line.” If the show doesn’t catch on I can always turn my hand to Toothbrush Holesmanship!! Thanks again. Vic.

Any chance of having a re-run of Radio Heroes in the future, please? I only caught the tail end of the legendary David Jacobs yesterday. My wife and I were devotees to his Radio 2 programme for years. Something very reassuring in his voice and manner. Once Don Black left, we were bereft (I think they replaced Don with some medical programme to remind us of our mortality?!). We searched for therapy and found Serenade Radio and have never left.
Whilst emailing, we’ve found two downsides to SR (1) we have to sleep, (2) we have to take the dog for a walk. This means we miss out on some great stuff, especially at weekends. A Saturday result for us is waking up halfway through Johnny McAtasney’s show (really try for the start – difficult) and still being awake at the end of Late Night Extra with Steve James, which we love. Thank you very much to ALL the Presenters and Producers for doing such a terrific and professional job. It’s greatly appreciated!

Well done and thanks to Steve James for playing that rarity ‘Le Blon’ by Anita Harris. Not issued on CD as far as I know, and only a rough copy to be found online. Someone at Serenade Towers clearly has a very impressive record collection!

I don’t know why the song has a James Bond air of mystery and menace to it – was it the theme to some other now-forgotten film? But never mind, it’s great.

Mum and myself tuned into David’s Sunday night R2 show. Probably he was what most resembled the station we knew. As David’s health was failing and was publicly admitted. My Mum was terminally ill and I guess with all that was going on. I lost track of his last year or so on air. I never heard that final broadcast which was obviously a struggle.
I did tune into Don Black. Then his show was shared with another(I forget who)I think each did 12 programmes at a time.

Hubert Gregg will be interesting. A very colourful life and sadly sidestepped when radio presenters are talked about.

      Hi Edgar,
You have a point😂This also ties in with your other comment. So many different versions of many songs.

This is sung as a duet. As well as a solo.
      Martha Tilton and Harry Babbitt.
      Tony Martin and Fran Warren.
      Ethel Merman and Ray Bolger.
      Margaret Whiting.
      Doris Day.
There is even a Swedish version.

I have heard them all except for the last one. All on Serenade.

Later in our hotel we met a total stranger, a Guernsey resident, and in the course of conversation we mentioned our visit to Roberts grave. The stranger then told us that Robert’s son David played the music music at his wedding.

Just to say I really enjoyed Radio Heroes just now. What a really well put together programme about Alan Dell, and really nice to hear that oh so easy presentation style again.
I am really looking forward to the rest of the series.
On a point of order, around 15 minutes in mention was made of Ray Moore, regarding him losing 15 minutes of his show to allow Alan to complete his tribute to Glenn Miller.
If there’s any chance of a second series then Ray, Sir Terry, Jimmy Young and John Dunn surely have to be top of the list.

What a pleasure to hear the dulcet tones of the great Alan Dell on the show Radio Heros. It reminds us of what we are missing on modern day radio, Serenade Radio being the exception. Thank you to all who are involved with the series. I am fortunate to have many of Alaan and Benny’s Sunday afternoon shows on cassette . Golden days as far as I am concerned. In Ireland most of our kind of music can only be heard by by tuning into local community stations manned by volunteers with a great knowledge of their particular genre of music. Please pass on my comments to all concerned. Looking forward to further episodes.

Thank you SO much for taking the time to reply.
I will not allow anything to interfere with my radio listening next Saturday, as it’s going to be gentle fun guessing who is up and coming for the focus of your programme each week. It is a glorious idea for a programme on a station like Serenade, and were I a betting man, I’d wager a few shillings (!) it might include a certain genial Merseysider and avid smoker from early morning radio, who one became confused over a rabbit-duck-fish 😁

As a boy, I had a relatively lonely childhood, and found incredible companionship is the radio. I still recall, thanks to a gift of memory, the likes of Jack Jackson, Bruce Wyndham, Sam Costa, Charlie Chester, Pete Murray and Keith Skues to name a few. Also Hubert Gregg, and when I left a message on an internet Book of Condolence on news of his passing,I had a lovely e-mail from his producer, Roy Oakeshott, which I still have.

Alan Dell was very special. His style of positioning his microphone very close to his mouth, and whispering very gently into it was his trademark, but his intros and choice of music, were sublime. When David announced he had passed, after sitting in for several months, I didn’t even know Alan was ill, partly due to a smaller internet presence than now, possibly due to a certain stoicism?

Really looking forward to this series on my favourite ‘radio’ station, many thanks again.

Hi Chris, you obviously have great taste in radio presenters and quite rightly too. Next Saturday it’s David Jacobs. And you will be pleased to know that Benny Green is in the list too. So keep listening and see if you can get others who share your good taste to join us on Saturday at 5 pm.

Dear Peter, We were thrilled to hear your first programme in the new “Radio Heroes” series this afternoon. Fans of Alan Dell for many years when radio really was worth listening too, we thought that the first edition was first class and put Alan in the place that he deserved – at the very top. Great stuff from all who contributed to the the creation of this one. Many many congratulations! Long live Serenade Radio!

      Hi Jonathan,
Thank you for your kind words. This series is something the BBC should have done years ago and it could then have been something you could download and keep for ever. Sadly we can’t do that yet on Serenade Radio. Keep listening and spread the word.

Ten minutes in and I am already enjoying “Radio Legends” so many names who were important and still are in the evolvement of radio in the UK. And the popularity of music.

We don’t forget them but sadly many will say “Who?”
Alan Dell. Superb. I’d be a teenage then. I will take uneducated guess that he did a Sunday Afternoon show. Possibly before being followed by Benny Green. Russell Davies and Desmond Carrington. Or following each other perhaps?

In time and probably very much later I have memories that Sing Something Simple and Charlie Chester between 4pm and 7pm.

But even Radio Geeks get things wrong😊Looking forward to the rest in this series.

It amazes me how much emotion listening to Serenade Radio brings out. Just catching up with Dick Fisher as i was out this morning and he played Born with a smile on my face. I had an uncle who played the piano and used to accompany me sometimes when i sang at odd events. Id forgotten all about that song but it was one of our tunes and the last time i heard it he was playing it. He is sadly no longer with us .. but such happy memories brought straight back…. I might need a tissue. !! Thank you for playing that Dick.

    • Dick Fisher on 5 August 2023

Thanks for sharing such a lovely memory Karen. I often find when selecting music, that I am driven more by the memories that particular songs bring flooding back than their chart success or technical quality. The songs we love the most always have an emotional connection to our individual life stories.

It was great to hear the Banjoliers on yesterday’s ‘Music While You Work’. The last time I heard them I was about 14 years old.

    2
    • Brian Reynolds on 2 August 2023

I quite agree, Philip. The Banjoliers did more MWYW programmes than any other combination (475 appearances) and I had the honour to be present at their final broadcast in 1982. Quite an experience, I can tell you!

Hi Andy, what a brilliant radio station you have made, absolutely love it, so nostalgic, and great to discover so many songs from the 50’s and before, that are new to me, real quality music. My favourites programmes are “Music while you work”, “Sing something simple”, your own weekday morning shows, your Saturday “TV” show, and the Big Band type songs on Monday & Tuesday at 21:00. The music you play is so appreciated by those of us who have become bored with the national and commercial radio stations who just churn out the same stuff, and are frightened to play the songs you play.
I know you can’t please everyone, but my only gripe is Dick Fisher playing songs from the 70’s, I heard “Young hearts run free” amongst others today, this is the type of stuff played to death on the likes of “Magic” and “Gold” radio ! Please keep Serenade unique !!!

    4
    • Karen on 3 August 2023

I have been thinking about this for a few days now and whilst i wouldnt want to hear lots of 70s music, or even 60s music to be honest, if you dont listen to anything else other than Serenade the odd 70s track is nice to hear. A little survey i did listening whilst working at home Tuesday and Wednesday would suggest Dick Fisher played 1 70s tune on Tuesday and 2 on Wednesday. It’s hardly excessive… And the important thing is they were decent 70s tracks. I prefer the older stuff but also like that teensy bit of variation. I dont think it detracts from the uniqueness of Serenade Radio.

    • Pat on 4 August 2023

On the front page of the Serenade website, Andy wrote: “The music on Serenade Radio is the best in easy listening mostly from the 1940s to 1970s. We don’t play music because of its age, we play it because it is worth hearing!”

Personally I like to hear some of the newer music in the weekly shows, I also really enjoy the Steve James’ and Jeff Owen programmes. I think the variety of shows that cover other period/styles such as the Big Band music, Folk Music, Songs from the Shows, Jazz, Dance Bands, Light Music, Mark Steyn, Music While You Work, Sing Something Simple and specialist series such as Radio Heroes and the TV Show, is what sets Serenade head and shoulders above other stations and all this without advertising!

      6
    • Edgar on 5 August 2023

I would agree. There are plenty of places to hear newer music but few radio stations sound as good as Serenade Radio (when it is doing a show I like, and that’s not always the case). Never thought I’d say a Johnny Mathis song needs to be “gone, gone, gone”. But Dick Fisher does play so many good sounding songs.

Roger, loving the new two hour format whi h seems to be giving you greater opportunity to broaden the programme content. The unexpected folk singer this week was in complete contrast to her later recordings! And thank you for playing Jimmy Webb’s “The Highwayman”; what a great songwriter he is…could you include ” The moon is a harsh mistress” by either Judy Collins or Glen Campbell sometime? Thanks
as always for a superb programme

    1
    • Roger Williams on 31 July 2023

David, thank you for your comments; going to two hours does present more challenges and opportunities. I am tempted to push the boundaries a little bit while having the Easy Listening remit of the station in mind. There’s a book by Dylan Jones called “The Wichita Lineman” which I can recommend for insights into Jimmy Webb as a songwriter. I need to get better organised for requests, especially as the suggestions from you and others, is so interesting. I’ll put The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress on the list but it can sometimes take a little while to get new songs onto the Serenade system. Thank you for your interest! Roger

Thank you John for your final ‘Music Cavalcade’. As Peter Tomlinson mentioned in his programme, a very worthy successor to the late Desmond Carrington’s All Time Greats on Radio 2 which was a Sunday lunchtime staple for so many. Thank you for the many hours of listening pleasure you’ve given and wishing you success with your new project. I hope it won’t be long before you’re back on Serenade Radio.

    • Anthony on 31 July 2023

Agreed. But I said something similar here and to John directly😊 Radio does evolve. It always has. As does the listener.

But the stations offered on FM/DAB are generally similar. Repetitive. Ignores great swathes of music. Presentation is hyper and cluttered.

Younger people can be coerced into liking music that is older and unknown. And older people to like newer music.

We have some very good new artists singing the music Serenade plays. But its difficult to get hold of their work.
Champian Fulton is one such artist. Its great to see Matt Dusk and Peter Grant on the station. But again very difficult to access their recorded work.

And some seem to release a couple of albums. Are highly praised and then disappear.
      Long live Serenade Radio.

    Hello Roger,

Just listening in to Dance Band Days, and I think you were querying the vocalist on Harry Bidgood And His Broadcasters – I Don’t Mind Being All Alone?

I’m wondering if it was Cyril Ramon Newton, who sang on a few numbers by this band at that time. In one of the internet references, a listing is mentioned in this book: “British Dance Bands On Record 1911 to 1945” by Brian Rust and Sandy Forbes, publ. 1987.

Many thanks for continued excellence. 😎

    • Roger Williams on 31 July 2023

Steve, you raise an interesting point. Dance Band Days is very much a team effort. We draw upon the expert knowledge of John Wright behind the scenes and Andy Marriot who produces the show. Andy has a copy of the book you mention which does not list individual vocalists for the number in question. However we do know that Cavan O’Connor, John Thorne and Bobby Sanders were present at the same recording session but there’s no mention of Cyril Ramon Newton. This isn’t to say that you’re not right in identifying him, but we can’t say for certain. Thank you for your interest, which is much appreciated! Roger

Roger i am reading a book called ‘ british dance band days .. the singers and smaller bands’ and i had just got to Cavan O ‘Connor a couple of nights ago. It was explaining he sang under a number of pseudonyms ann then says the reason we dont always know the singer is that an unknown singer commanded a fee of 2 guineas but once they became recognised it was doubled. So they tried to stop the singer being recognised by them not being named or singing under a variety of pseudonyms..a ploy to keep the cost down …. Which is fascinating but a bit annoying now when we try to work out who.it is. Although you probably know all that already … Fascinating to me though as i am just reading it !

She also released a series of wonderful albums in Spain in the early to mid-1970’s. A fine jazz, pop and gospel vocalist. Please add!

Kismet! Thanks much, Andy! Don’t miss her standout 1975 album titled “I’m in Love with Love.” Imagine Nancy Wilson lived in Spain and recorded and you’ll get the feel of that album. Donna’s version of the title track “I’m in Love with Love,” (jazzy, soulful, big band with strings) and others like “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” and Gordon Jenkin’s “Good-Bye” are outstanding and so very underplayed. The Serenade audience is going to love her. Thanks and love listening to you guys across the pond here in Austin, Texas.

In the last few hours I have received countless messages from listeners concerned that Light Music will no longer be part of Serenade Radio. This could not be further from the truth. The untimely death of David Corbett has, of course, meant that the programme could not continue in it’s present form. Indeed David is a very hard act to follow.
Be assured, Light Music fans, we are not abandoning you. Please be patient.
In the meantime Music While You Work can be heard every weekday morning at 9.30, and there’s some lovely Light Music from the archive every Thursday evening at 9.30

Whilst i am sure we are all still reeling at the untimely death of the lovely David, the expertise he brought to SR was immeasurable. I am sure everyone can understand that people like that dont ‘grow on trees’ and that Andy will, as ever, be working to resolve the problem he now has in the best way for SR.

      4
    • Anthony on 17 July 2023

As long as Serenade radio continues to exist I am not concerned that the quality and variety will change. You play what others have neglected and forgotten bit also find new music that fits into its criteria. Older music does not mean it is old fashioned as it does not mean that everything released today is just noise.

The problem is that other stations avoid it. I grew up with all kinds of music. I had older parents so I heard music they knew and vice versa.

But as Stanley Black has been mentioned. I am truly amazed at the volume of music the likes of him were released on record. Also how many orchestras and arrangers were issuing instrumental versions of “Pop” songs certainly into the late 70’s and 80’s. Then stopped.
      All the best

Linda, Like David there is something special about British Light Classics music. It provokes memories. Nostalgia. Emotions specific to it. It also has a quality of its own. Sadly many great composers, musicians and arrangers and a time forgotten.

Strange that you should mention Dusk. I woke at 4am Sunday morning and was playing a CD of such music and I found that piece did affect me too.

I have just heard Peter Tomlinson announce the very sad news about David Corbett – and now coming to the website have seen the announcement on the home page (I often use an internet radio). I loved hearing David’s programmes of music you won’t find anywhere else; and champions of this genre are few today. I heard so many pieces that were new to me – when this music would be heard regularly on the Light on 1500m I was likely tuned to a pirate station! Fortunately, ones tastes and outlook broaden. We have lost a fount of knowledge and a gentleman.

Just to say thanks again Steve for another superb Sunday breakfast, on the increasingly important ( in a radio dessert for the main) Serenade. Have you on around the house here on the island every weekend. Love your music and presentation. Along with Simon’s excellent Dinner at 8, my fave shows on the station.

David Corbett and I were good friends for over forty years, united by our mutual passion for light music. He was the author of a 600 page book about conductor, Harry Davidson and old-time dance music in general. He was one of a dwindling number of authorities on the genre of light music. We didn’t get to meet very often but spoke almost weekly on the phone – indeed we had a long conversation on the day before his demise! The “Light Programme” which ran for over five years, was his passion – and it showed!
I have now learned that David’s passing was a peaceful one – in a coffee shop, whilst drinking a cup of coffee, he just slipped away. May his soul rest in peace! My condolences to his loved ones.

    Roger,
Another excellent programme and thank you for the Richard and Teddy Thompson track.. and thanks to Karen for suggesting it. Also loved the newer stuff and the Harvey Andrews song. Would it be possible for you to include the Julie Felix and Leonard Cohen duet of “That’s no way to say goodbye”? and a version of Jimmy Webb’s “The Highwayman”? And thznk you for the Seekers too! Kind regards

    • Roger Williams on 16 July 2023

HJello David, thank you as ever for your comments. For reasons that will shortly become apparent I will need the recommendations of you and others to beef up the Soft Folkus library even more than before, The Highwayman is in the mix for a future show. The intriguing Julie Felix Leonard Cohen collaboration is a little more problematic. Do you have details of an official release? I’ve found a YouTube clip of their performance on tv which would need a bit of jiggery pokery to sort out – not impossible by any means, but will take a little time – an official release would be easier. Roger

Ive just seen the schedule for next week Roger. Goodness. Thinking caps on then ! I might start with another of my favourite IEC tunes … Without Lisa. The live version is best as it gives Joseph the chance to show his violin skills to great effect but the album version is lovely too… Although its on a pre IEC album called ‘ On hire by Cole Stacey and Joseph O’Keefe. ‘
Thank you for playing persuasion by the way. That was a recording of it i had not heard ( the version i had was live) … So double bonus. 🙂

Strangely she seems tohave been forgotten but was on tv lots in the late 60s. The rest of the cd is broadly bbc2 and radio1 recordings.Hopethis helps

  246. Anthony on 14 July 2023

Very sad to have just read the news of the passing of David Corbett who presented the “Light Programme” on Sunday nights.

My music taste is extremely wide and it was good to see acknowledgement to music ignored virtually anywhere else.

Some may say(and it is an attitude within radio in general)to avoid playing certain music because it is unpopular. Forgetting that could be because a genre of music is dropped or given little exposure.
The same stations with such an attitude start to sound too similar. Copy each other. Are unadventurous. Repetatative.

Unfortunately the programme was on air on one of very few nights I am in company and not at home. Unable to record it to listen to later.

Many years ago. My friend Bob Monkhouse. Yes the very same. Did a wonderful music series featuring the music David played on Serenade on BBC Radio 3.

Once again sending heartfelt condolences to David’s family and colleagues. And thinking of him too.

    • Steve on 16 July 2023

I’ve only just seen the news, and would like to echo Anthony’s words – David was a wonderful broadcaster, whose knowledge of the his field was imparted subtly but authoritatively. It is a favourite genre of music for me, and I was astonished from his two-hour programmes how many pieces I had not heard of before.

I remember that Bob Monkhouse series for a national broadcaster, I wish I’d recorded it, as I do with David’s wonderful programmes. I would love to hear repeats at some point. My thoughts are with his family.

  248. Anthony on 13 July 2023

How fortunate. I don’t get much but I am usually home in time for the 9.30pm Thursday specials.

So tonight was a especially welcome hearing Robert Farnon and guest singer Ronnie Carroll.

We really did have some wonderful but sadly forgotten vocalists. Orchestras, bands, composers and arrangers.

You do wonder how many programmes were wiped or if on transcription disc services were just discarded and thrown into skips when stations had a clear out.

There are so many wonderful programmes that still exist of the golden age of US radio music and performers we only knew from the films or records that reached these shores.

When TV dominated and took over in the 50’s so many treasures were dumped.

I suspect it is even more difficult to trace broadcasts from the UK.

A similar problem happened in Australia too.

    Thank you Serenade Radio.

(I hope that I haven’t sent a duplicate post of something else I wanted to add)
I missed five minutes and panicked as my internet radio played up and I feared I was going to have set it up from scratch.
I suspect the presenter was John Benson.
It was interesting hearing Ronnie Carroll sing The Folks who live on the Hill. With an introduction/preamble before the main song was sung.

As other Serenade Radio presenters have commented on this practice is rarely heard these days even when standards are sung these days.

When i first started listening to Serenade Radio, as a child of the sixties with parents from the thirties it was the music we listened to at home that i was most attracted to. And i still love it. But the more i listen i have realised it is the music of my grandparents era that i am loving the most at the moment. It started when i realised that i was listening out for Andy’s vintage spot each day. That made me listen to music while you work, and now dance band days is a must listen for me. The music has such atmosphere and is totally neglected every where else except on SR. I am not sure i would even have heard it without SR. We are rather spoiled in that respect. Great stuff.

A very hot night here in Deal – sleeping not easy – so I have been listening to Serenade Radio and on the Dawn Chorus I have just heard ‘Tabarinage’, played by the Light Music Society Orchestra. I can tell you that this was composed by my Dad, Robert Docker, in 1961 and ‘Tabarinage’ means Buffoonery!! My Dad once received a letter from an amateur film maker who wanted to use the music in a scene from the film where a live monkey jumped out of an aeroplane!! Not sure that’s what my Dad had in mind when he composed it!
Thank you Serenade, for keeping the music alive.

    Hi Kevin Taylor,
After playing Englebert’s Quando, Quando, Quando you said, there’s two songs with a latin flair, which is incorrect. Quando is Italian for “when”, whereas, if it were spelled “Cuando” on the label that would indicate Spanish.

    0
    • Andy Marriott on 9 July 2023

      Hi Michael,

This got me thinking so I went online and found this: The cultures whose core language is based on Latin, are Latin cultures, such as Spanish, French, and Italian. We can refer to individuals from these countries as Latin. Hispanic, however, refers to people and cultures that are derived from former parts of the Spanish Empire.

So, it looks like Kevin knows his stuff!

      6
      • james wilson on 16 July 2023

Yes Andy you are dead right…..the first time I heard the word Quando was in a Latin class, too many years ago o remember. But I always remember when I first heard the song I thought, “Oh yes, quando is Latin for when”

Stuart Linell in fine form today. Firstly over his hay fever of a few weeks ago.
Good music as in favourites and others never heard or rarely played.

Saves me playing my 7,000 CD music library of songs but also playing what I wish I had but cannot find or are being sold at ridiculous prices.

Mobility is impaired. Our public transport is being reduced. So options of going out or attending local events is becoming increasingly difficult for many.

So a relaxing day and evening of music radio helps the time pass by pleasantly. Its company.

May Serenade continue for many years to come and we are around to enjoy it too.

Hi all, I love listening to Andy Marriott ‘s Television Show, it certainly is a great way to begin my Sunday morning and brings back many childhood memories. We didn’t have a TV in my home until I was 8 and we were very restricted as to viewing time as my parents believed it to be bad for both brain and eyes. I have only just discovered your station – today, (Sunday 2-7-’23), and I think I will make it regular listening.
My favourite era of music is the 1920’s – 1940’s Dance Bands and vocalists.
I’m pleased to see you do cater for this era on Saturdays which is repeated on Mondays. I, of course, missed the Saturday edition, but look forward to hearing the repeat on Monday.
Sadly, people like me are neglected by the mainstream broadcasters. I assume they think that because you weren’t around in those days, you won’t want to hear the music from those days…. Well I can’t get enough of the music from that time !

On ‘Bobby Sherwood And His Orchestra – Moonlight Becomes You’, the vocalist was Kitty Kallen, I believe.

Another terrific selection of music, and the comedy slot 🤣🤣 Eric Morecambe was on Parkinson one time, and Parky asked: ‘Have you ever thought about what you and Ernie would have been if you weren’t funny?”

As someone who works in a public service organisation may I just say that the Ronnie Barker twaddle was not twaddle but absolute fact… And clearer than most managers I’ve had. Brilliant
